oh to have a pair of bat wings
The unemployed of all midnight europe shivered in their stone sleep and came awake.
Which is to say that all the old beasts, all the old tales, all the old nightmares, all the old unused demons-put-by and witches left in the lurch, quaked at the call, reared at the whistle, trembled at the summons, and in dustdevils of propulsion skimmed down the roads, flitted skies, buckshot through the shaken trees, forded streams, swam rivers, and arrived, arrived, arrived.
Which is still to say that all the dead statues and idols and semigods and demigods of Europe lying like a dreadful snow all about, abandoned, in ruins, gave a blink and a start and came as salamanders on the road, or bats in skies or dingos in the bush. they flew, the galloped, they skittered.
-Ray Bradbury, on how Notre Dame got its gargoyles, from the 1972 The Halloween Tree
🙂this picture makes me happy!!

yesss, midwestern gothic right here!!!
Jaw Bone Wind Conjure
“An old jaw bone, taken from a sheep dead in a barren field, killed by a winter storm so that spring brings a greater yield.
Tie it with a leather strap to the branch of an ancient yew, or to the bough of a holly tree if other choices are but few.
A sprig of henbane, harvested at Lammas, four pods are just enough, to show the spirits nature true or to call the poisoner’s bluff.
Spread the henbane seed in a circle around the chosen tree, burn the empty sprig as an incense to unlock the hidden key.
Take an iron spike and delicately carve the spirit’s given sign, upon the north face of the tree above the earth, as we faithfully divine.
As the smoke fills the air listen to the whispering breeze, that speaks of truths untold as it caresses the jaw bone with ease.
Know that wind spirit’s subtle words will unveil that lost wisdom, sought by those to whom the tree spirit is willing to succumb.
A penny as an offering to the tree spirit, as sure as pacts are made, buried under tree’s roots to seal the bargain and bind the conjured shade.”
a spell i am going to do someday when i have a big stone tower to live in and also a bubbly cauldron and a big stone window to gaze out of.
leo the laughing gargoyle says ace people are valid!!!
Dark cottagecore thoughts-
Embroidering skulls, daggers and poisonous plants and fungi on everything
Collecting good stones in your garden and mossy bark in your bedroom
A lone candle burning softly at night
Carrying a basket around with you on daily adventures for finds and spare warm layers
Braiding velvet ribbons into your hair
Sitting out in your garden under the moon and talking about your dreams with friends
Earth magic, kitchen magic, folk magic
Softly petting cats in new neighborhoods
Walk around barefoot like a child and really ground yourself
Make yourself a dark apron with pearlescent buttons and big pockets
Befriend your local ghosts
Dark wood furniture with carved accents of lions heads and roses
Hand washing your clothes with essential oils
Take a ceramics class and make yourself a three legged cauldron
Soft jumpers/sweatshirts with long sleeves
Start the day by chopping up fresh vegetables for a slow cook stew
Get involved with your local community; plant a small bee garden, research plants that are good for cleaning water and go put a few near your local stream, give some of your homegrown herbs and veggies to others
Go on little night picnics, bring fairy lights and make up stories of dangerous men and women and the trolls they fell in love with
yesssss
if it is spooky and cozy and a wee bit adventurous and a pinch dangerous
then i claim it for gargoylecore
i aspire to be like quasimodo, with lots of little gargoyles to talk to and never once interacting with anyone but my dad and a pretty girl who visits my dark gloomy tower from time to time
The Gargoyle of Notre Dame overlooking Paris, 1910.
Photographs like this simply amaze me. A century ago captured in a single frame. Everyone in that moment is gone. A whole new set of humans exist now. It’s mind boggling. So many people we will never know and will never know us.
someday i will got to norte dame and see the gargoyles, i only hope they have survived

not my aesthetic totally but there is a gargoyle!!
girls, boys, non-binaries, I give you... GARGOYLECORE
you are a gargoyle. keeping watch over your Gothic European town by night.
-dusk falls and your aging stone shell begins to crack
-shaking rubble from your skin you emerge, spreading your wings, and swooping down into the foggy night
-HORNS.
-the light of the moon kissing your skin as you walk the cobble streets
-doing anything by candle or lantern light
-defending your stubbornly ambitious lover from the forces of evil they were totally tampering with, then slipping away before the sunrise
-a bird companion of some sort, do I even need to keep going???
