one of the greatest temptations as humans is to see the void left in another person by their wounds and believe that we possess the shape and malleability to fill them.

we are made in the image of God but this does not mean we possess God’s infinite capacity to fill other people’s voids and complete them. we are made in the image of God, but we are finite: this is the chiefest difference between us and God. thus we must all bear wounds because of our humanness, our limits. bataille is right in thinking that all humans desire continuity with the other- through continuity we can transcend this finitude that makes us aware of that gravity which keeps us bound to earth. we may attempt continuity by attempting to extend ourselves and fill the empty spaces we recognize in other people. even if we do so out of love, this extension can sometimes leave wounds in ourselves because we are inherently limited by our humanness. we will snap back on ourselves because we are not infinite, like God, and hurt both ourselves and the other. sometimes the greatest act of love we extend to someone else is to force them to sit with their wound and learn the shape of it. it is to wait until God fills their wound, however he chooses to do so. you can touch hands with the other and tell them you see their injury, perhaps even that you have one in a similar shape. but sometimes it is more powerful to tell them that you believe in their capacity to seek their own salve, to heal their own wounds through the God that loves them and is in them, than it is to attempt to fix or sooth or heal them ourselves.
