Can I just talk about how my flatmate just loudly opened his bedroom door, let it slam shut behind him, clomped down the hallway, slammed the bathroom door shut, slammed the toilet seat down, sat on it and took a shit, flushed the toilet, slammed the toilet seat back up, NOT washed his hands, opened the bathroom door, let it slam shut behind him, clomped back up the hallway, loudly opened his bedroom door and let it slam shut behind him, and sighed so loudly I could hear it through my bedroom wall. It’s 3:21 am.

It’s happening again it’s literally 2:58am this motherfucker has been to the toilet and back about 3 times in the last 15 minutes and EVERY TIME has let both doors slam behind him and stomped up the hallway I’m going to throw him out the fucking window

I was just in Superdrug and there was this guy that was working there and I could see him out of the corner of my eye psyching himself up to come ask if I needed help (I was looking at pimple patches and was absolutely baffled) He eventually comes over and as he asks me “hi can I help you?” In the most obvious gay-trying-to-act-straight voice ever and I can see in his face that he’s mistaken me for a teenage boy and is internally praying that I don’t clock him and hate crime him in the middle of Superdrug so I’m immediately like “oh yeah thanks babes I don’t know which one of these would be good with my skin” and as soon as he hears my voice he IMMEDIATELY flips into “omg yeah I shouldn’t really tell you this but the true tea is that those overpriced ones are just for the fashion influencers and they don’t really work” and I was like yes girl don’t worry I’m not a man I’m just a masc lesbian

Ok but can I PLEASE talk about Vastra and Jenny for a sec? Because they were my first exposure to a wlw relationship on TV, and little 10 year old Tali didn’t realise how much of a big deal that was at the time.

In a good man goes to war, I was so wrapped up in the story with the ponds and river that I barely registered the cool lizard lady and another human person, but I remember being confused about how there was a Silurian there teaming up with the doctor after all the plot happened in the hungry earth/cold blood

In the snowmen, there was a lot more time to get settled into victorian London, and as a major history nerd, I was loving all the period costumes and sets, and then we are reintroduced to Vastra and Jenny, with dr Simeon comparing Vastra to Sherlock Holmes, and that really had me intrigued. I then remember Simeon throwing out the “suspiciously intimate companion” line (I didn’t understand what that meant it all sounded like posh Victorian speak to me I was 10) and then Vastra replies “we are married” and I was like huh? As in married to each other?

So my brain put them down to “weird scifi marriage” like how I imagined a person marrying a robot in the future or something. It wasn’t until I got into other fandoms, didn’t really watch or think about doctor who all that much for a few years, during which I had a whole gender and sexuality crisis, although the idea of a Silurian, a Sontaran and a human all living together in Victorian England is one that stays in my head, although when I think of powerful women in doctor who my brain goes to more obvious choices of my favourite companions at the time, Amy and Clara.

Then, years later, I do a big rewatch of all of NuWho, and lo and behold, Madame Vastra turns up with the “good evening, I’m a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is my wife!” And im like !!!! That’s some gay shit!!! And realise seeing queerness modelled by two insanely smart, powerful, independent women, in a way that isn’t the focus of their relationship or even the most interesting aspect of it, had subconsciously done so much work in making me feel more ok about queerness. That these characters that I’d admired so much were queer and that it wasnt made into a big deal was a game changer for me.
