Ok but can I PLEASE talk about Vastra and Jenny for a sec? Because they were my first exposure to a wlw relationship on TV, and little 10 year old Tali didn’t realise how much of a big deal that was at the time.

In a good man goes to war, I was so wrapped up in the story with the ponds and river that I barely registered the cool lizard lady and another human person, but I remember being confused about how there was a Silurian there teaming up with the doctor after all the plot happened in the hungry earth/cold blood

In the snowmen, there was a lot more time to get settled into victorian London, and as a major history nerd, I was loving all the period costumes and sets, and then we are reintroduced to Vastra and Jenny, with dr Simeon comparing Vastra to Sherlock Holmes, and that really had me intrigued. I then remember Simeon throwing out the “suspiciously intimate companion” line (I didn’t understand what that meant it all sounded like posh Victorian speak to me I was 10) and then Vastra replies “we are married” and I was like huh? As in married to each other?

So my brain put them down to “weird scifi marriage” like how I imagined a person marrying a robot in the future or something. It wasn’t until I got into other fandoms, didn’t really watch or think about doctor who all that much for a few years, during which I had a whole gender and sexuality crisis, although the idea of a Silurian, a Sontaran and a human all living together in Victorian England is one that stays in my head, although when I think of powerful women in doctor who my brain goes to more obvious choices of my favourite companions at the time, Amy and Clara.

Then, years later, I do a big rewatch of all of NuWho, and lo and behold, Madame Vastra turns up with the “good evening, I’m a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is my wife!” And im like !!!! That’s some gay shit!!! And realise seeing queerness modelled by two insanely smart, powerful, independent women, in a way that isn’t the focus of their relationship or even the most interesting aspect of it, had subconsciously done so much work in making me feel more ok about queerness. That these characters that I’d admired so much were queer and that it wasnt made into a big deal was a game changer for me.
