@lesbiandelgal
beneath the wings of their deity, the royal family prospers.
Going through all of Thistle's dialogue to analyze his mannerisms, a couple of moments stuck out to me where Thistle uses "boku" written out in hiragana rather than kanji (typically giving a more childish impression)
The panel of him reassuring Delgal especially really strikes me... Thistle sounding more childish during a scene where Delgal is putting such an adult emotional burden on him, as well as when he's yelling to the void that he's going to protect Delgal, that Delgal told him to, really emphasizes the parentification going on here...
Another thing that stuck out, while there was a good amount of kanji in Thistle's lines just before on the same page, his dialogue in the panel where he says "i don't need anything anymore." is written entirely in hiragana. And even the unusually enunciated "nanni" (as opposed to just "nani") gives a certain impression of how he's actually speaking that's hard to describe... almost worn out?
These aren't the only times, just the ones that make me so, so sad for him.
do we know what personal pronoun delgal uses? i know we hear him using "watashi" in the wedding painting, but that's a formal setting, i'd be curious if we know what he uses when he's just like, with family, in childhood and/or adulthood!
Upon checking it, he uses a few different ones! in Thistle's flashback of him saying he's scared of dying, and potentially the scene with him begging thistle to save Eodio, (hard to place if it's coming from him or thistle) he uses 僕(boku) (interestingly, the former is one of the scenes where thistle uses ぼく, the same but in kana...)
However in the cake comic (where he's a child) from the adventurer's bible, he uses 俺(ore)... it's hard to say what he would use in a casual setting with family, since aside from the wedding and the cake comic, I found the only times he refers to himself is in very vulnerable moments... The exact nuance is something I'm still not super familiar with, though. (this is why I myself default to using 僕... very easy pronoun. Slightly masculine and appropriate both for casual and non-formal polite conversation, even if it gives a childish impression... I wonder if this is why Thistle uses it so much?)
Eodio uses 俺(ore) in the one scene where he speaks, so I could see Delgal using it in casual conversation when he isn't despairing... but it could also be that he "grew out of it", hard to say. Delgal sadly only has so much dialogue to go off.
I have new revelations on this! I just realized Yaad (who seems to only use 僕, even after taking Delgal's body) uses 俺(ore) when pretending to be Delgal to placate Thistle... so based on this Delgal most likely primarily uses 俺, at least in casual situations like speaking with family
giving my boy a treat. he has suffered long enough
it still has the wrapper on. dumb fuk.

as a dog delgal is definitely a schnauzer to me. do you see my vision
and for today's melini family brainrot i will now cry over how archetypal damsel-in-distress yaad recognized that his captor was just as trapped as he was if not more so and then proceeded to rescue him from their shared cage astride a horse
Truly what was Thistle's crime but loving too much- oh he went too far, he killed the main party- so did rabbits with knives for feet, okay. he was the equivalent of a teenage boy who watched his father get brutally murdered and then became burdened with the weight of his nephew's life. He was the only elf in a nation of humans. His younger brother became his older brother in what must have felt like a blink. Delgal begged him to save everyone's lives so he did. And despite all his work, despite doing what he was asked to do, Delgal still chose to die.
How could you ask him to give that up? Have you never loved to destruction? Sunk your nails into the present out of fear for the future? Have you never loved so intensely that anything but total reciprocation felt like a betrayal? He gave everything for his nation and they resented him, how could he forgive that? He lasted 1000 years as a dungeon lord and all he wanted was to protect his people in the only way he knew how.
japanese audio description for the baby delgal scene using the words "[man & woman] and an elf" is tickling me. elf is a gender
Thinking about the scene of yaad holding thistle close to him... Thistle was already small to him but now he's even smaller. Light, frail, like a fragile porcelain doll. And his body is cold, but he's still breathing. His eyes are distant and glassy, but his heart is still beating. Lifeless, but still living.
you know what.
thistle and the "my cat is sad" poem.
i rest my case.
the contrast between how cute baby yaad is and how ugly baby delgal is is really funny. also baby yaad being like 3/4 the size of baby delgal. why is he so little. so small.
OP i love the idea of preemie Yaad who everyone frets about terribly, so i sent this post to several friends, one of whom said "idk Yaad looks like a typical infant to me, i think Delgal was just big" which leads me to offer the following: Thistle wondering why Eodio and Yaad are so tiny when they're fresh new babs because he remembers what a big boy Delgal was, only to find out that in fact Delgal was just abnormally large for a tallman baby, and proceeding to be smugly triumphant about the fact that HIS favorite Melini boy was The Biggest And Best Of Them All, as if he birthed Delgal himself
i love this thank you
thistle's too short for this scheme to work...
ive gone crazy

Thinking about how purple clothing was typically exclusive to the royal family... Thistle being dressed in fanciful violet motley to proudly show that he's more beloved than a mere jester, he's part of the family...! (even if his role in their family is more akin to an amusing pet...) He's their special boy!
