Cole and Nya take Lloyd to get his ears pierced after Possession.
Something about bodily autonomy and having a rebellious phase and finding healthy coping mechanisms and getting to be a teenager to recover the childhood you weren't allowed to have.
And getting to talk. Because communication is important.
- Ray & Maya were the previous Fire & Water Hashira, who trained under Wu, but they left the Slayer Corps after losing all their fellow Hashira in a failed attempt to kill Garmadon, the demon king
- Knowing Garmadon would be after them, they tried to live quiet, uninteresting lives in order to raise their kids, but he eventually found them anyway and killed them, leaving Kai & Nya on their own as children. The only thing they leave behind are their swords, which Kai keeps.
- Kai turned to stealing to provide for Nya, which got him charged and punished plenty of times. Nya obviously grew up and tried to help Kai, but got the same treatment. They moved around to multiple towns, but their criminal markings got them shunned
- They found a place where the residents were mostly elderly people who were actually kind to them and took them in. Kai and Nya were happy to do all the labor work the older people couldn't do anymore and they finally felt accepted and appreciated
- Kai comes back from hunting one day to find the village slaughtered and his sister on death's door. He intends to carry her all the way to a doctor before she turns into a demon and immediately tries to kill him, giving him the scar on his face.
- A demon slayer, Misako, intervenes, but is surprised when Kai & Nya try to protect each other instead. She strikes up a deal with Kai: she'll let Nya live if he joins the Corps and completes a task for her after he is trained. Kai agrees.
- Misako dumps them on Wu. Nya falls into her coma while Kai trains. Wu is able to teach him Fire Breathing despite not being a master in it because Wu also trained Ray.
- Kai goes to the Final Selection with his parents' swords and survives along with Cole and Jay.
- Zane is their age, but is a Tsuguko being trained by the one of the Hashira that they meet later.
- When Kai returns to Wu, Nya is awake and Misako has returned to congratulate him and present him with her request: to look after her son, Lloyd, who is half demon. Any other demon slayer would just try to kill Lloyd, since they all hate demons, but since Kai is determined to find a cure for his sister, maybe he will also find a cure for Lloyd's cursed half.
- Lloyd can walk in sunlight, but he's prone to burning, so he carries a higasa around in the day. He becomes more powerful at night, with superhuman physical abilities and regeneration, but he also gets more violent

I don't know why I should be told to admit that Geo's writing is particularly bad when pretty much every love interest is written with the same level of lackluster focus.
Pixal had one season where she was kinda interesting and then she was an ai chatbot assistant for like the next 3 or 4. Did not become a person again until season 8
Skylor had one season where she was kinda interesting and then she appeared like 4 more times where she did anything of consequence and she and Kai are still somehow a couple
Arin and Euphrasia have almost no time together. Frak and Sora have no chemistry.
Nya and Jay are the ONLY ship in the series that have gotten enough focus for me to be convinced that they, on paper, without a thousand headcanons, a working pair.
