we need to talk about the problems that gold star lesbianism brings
you know how it’s become popular to claim that known gay people may have actually been bi because at one point they were known to have a relationship with the “opposite” gender? like when everyone claimed that sally ryde couldn’t possibly have been a lesbian (despite IDing that way herself) because she’d been married to a man?
and you know how we agree that it’s homophobic to do that?
gold star lesbianism ends up playing into these. by claiming that any lesbian who was ever involved with a man ever is not a “true” lesbian, you’re encouraging the idea that lesbians who didn’t immediately know that they were gay and went through relationships with men before coming to the realization aren’t actually lesbians
you’re dismissing the enormous harm that compulsory heterosexuality does to us and you’re ignoring how hard it is to navigate our own attraction and relationships as women attracted to other women in a misogynistic and heteronormative society
gold star lesbianism would paint the lesbian who has never touched a man as the norm, when it’s far from that. and everyone needs to stop acting like lesbians (and bi girls, too) who have previously been with a man are somehow ~ruined~ forever
