One aspect of my personality that I struggle to make room for is my crazy bouts of obsessive making. Having an idea and then just throwing myself into it without much of a plan. This happened with all those bandanas I made a couple months back, it happened with the scarf hiding under my desk waiting for me to finish knitting it. I love making, I love drawing, I love painting. How does one incapsulate a million things into something tangible and cohesive? I made a ton of jewelry this week and I’m probably not done yet. It’s hard to not feel the pressure of being “present” on social media, but I also that allowing myself and my work to feel like a product I will lose the joy that I find in making. After I finish a big drawing I need a bit of time to step back from making so intensely, and take some space for myself. I think in the future this need while probably change, but for now I need to respect that space. A lot comes with a finished piece for me. It takes a lot of thought, research, and time. It’s well worth it but I have to remind myself to keep somethings for myself. So probably don’t expect a finished drawing from me for a little bit. Finished a framed with lady. I call her “The Patron Saint of placebos and false promises” I painted her for a rose themed show at Illuminati in Denver. I’ve been thinking a lot about false medicine, the ways in which something seems like the beautiful answer but often holds thorny truths. How people can hurt us and do so with a smile on their face. My space is currently a huge mess, but I’ve been devoting all my waking free hours and all my energy to this piece. She’s probably the most ambitious thing I’ve created since I left art school. She’s also the first iteration of the pantheon of Saints filling my attention right now. Later this week this lovely lady will be finished and headed off to Denver to be in a Rose themed show. I’ve been trying to push boundaries. Make myself a little comfortable artistically. I used to hate the color purple, and I’ve rarely found much solace in the color pink, but here we are. She kind of looks like me, she kind of doesn’t. If anything this gal captures the way it feels to exist in a body. I recently got myself a new pallet and some new colors of water soluble gauche. The gauche that I’ve used for a very long time belonged to my dad when he was in art school. I love those colors dearly and they have greatly informed my pallet, but it felt like time to expand the diversity. I don’t have much (hardly any at all) rhyme or reason to mixing colors into what they are I just kind of follow my gut until I find something that is pleasing to me. Sometimes I get really frustrated with the tiny delicate details I insist on doing and very much like a tiny human have to get “my silly’s out”. Usually what this means is that I vomit onto a page with various materials hoping to remove the jitters from my body. Sometimes beautiful accidents happen and it informs my understanding of how color functions. Today those jitters were bad, but I decided to apply my de-stressing technique to something more figurative, more inline with the stuff I’ve been drawing lately.
