Fritillaria by @jeremydiamondmetalsmith on Instagram
Mild steel, powder coat, silicone, paper, paint, polyester. 2020. “In the victorian language of flowers, the imperial fritillary (Fritillaria imperialis) represents majesty, and the wealth and status associated therewith. As an adornment, Fritillaria examines the difference between those who possess that wealth and those who do not: When the work is worn, it’s wearer’s neck and shoulders are ornamented, but at the cost of their total immobilization. while ostensibly a reasonable price to pay for the fashionable wealthy elite, this trade-off is impossible for those among us who must perform labor in order to subsist. As an additional effect, the construction of the work forces the wearer to hold their head tilted very slightly upward so as to look down their nose at others.” “I finished this piece before spring break as part of my (unfortunately interrupted) BFA thesis, and was finally able to get it documented recently thanks to the incredible @galacticatlas and @dianaroee!” #SupportBlackArt #JeremyDiamond
