Multimodal Composing

After reading the section of the writers reference book called “Understanding and Composing Multimodal Projects” I have discovered the aspects of multi modality that were expressed in my project 1 and will be further researched in project 2. Multimodal composing is when you include more than one way of presenting an idea, or communicating an idea through various modes. In project one, I used many visual modes in order to communicate my idea of why women only are used in viagra commercials. I created a larger model of a viagra pill box that had a poster board inside it. The poster had simple symbols that guided the audience through the points of my project idea. For the project, we weren’t allowed to use words to show the meaning of our topic, so I tried my best to visually and graphically compose this multimodal project. I will further carry out this project into project two as a visual composition. It will be different because it will be presented on a blog, with words and visuals. I will introduce the project with background information about the topic “sex sells” and how it originated. I will tie in this information to its connection with Viagra and their marketing tactics. Each blog post will have visual pictures or videos that further explain the points I am making. My text will be informational and persuasive, and I will try my best to be relatable and personal to connect to the audience. I envisioned the blog very colorful but simple, in order to guide the viewer through this topic in an organized and understandable manner. I want the visuals to trigger emotions and keep the viewers interested in this specific topic. This blog should both entertain or persuade. I want to convey the message/put a spotlight on the way viagra portray’s women and why their product reaches out to such a narrow audience. Besides just informing my audience on my standpoint of this topic, I would like to support my ideas with factual evidence and statistics. I will experiment on components of sound/music and figure out if it will further stimulate the audience or distract them. I hope to express my topic of project two in a clear, organized, yet interesting way.

Fire

I went home for the weekend to get away from everything. During the summertime I could not wait to get back to school, and now I'm yearning to be home whenever I have the chance.

I’m remembering the end of summer, making my journey back to school for my sophomore year. And while the excitement of moving in and seeing everyone again wears off, my doubt, confusion, and uneasiness settles back in.

I can’t tell if it’s the people here or the school or both, but sometimes I’m not happy and I need to change things. I go back and forth between wanting to transfer, but just the fact that I’m considering it makes me feel that I’m not in the right place.

My best friend Claire got me into a British series on Netflix called Skins. Claire being a film major and all, I wasn’t going to object. She has the best god damn taste and this series was not an exception. I completely lived in the series for a few weeks. It consumed my life. It was just so REAL. Not like “American real” where the teens have perfect bodies, perfect style, and perfectly dramatic lives that are so relatable they are unrelatable, but the real where its almost disturbing and uncomfortable, yet seductive.

Anyway, one of the last episodes, “Skins: Fire”, really got to me. The character that played Effy said the reason for calling the episode “Fire” was to reflect Effy’s burning desire to get her life started and moving. I realized I harbor the same angst that Effy feels. I just want to get out of limbo and be passionate about something. I want to FEEL and be alive!! I’m sick of this rut. But the only way to get my life going is to get off my ass MYSELF and just do something, anything. I want Manhatten. I always whine about how badly I belong in the city.  Some people have careers for dreams. Some have the dream of a family. I just want to be in the city. It’s the only place I feel challenged and inspired. It’s the only place with flaws I accept. I want in, so I’m going to get in. I have to make things happen myself I can’t keep waiting around for things to happen. My mom says to be patient, but I’m not going to just sit around and waste time. That’s just not me. I don’t want the typical life. It seems so draining and groggy to me. I want something that’s meaningful to me, something bigger. I know I’m young, but I’m sick of being told to wait. Do you think they told Beethoven at the age of 3 to stop playing piano and “wait till your older”? HELL NO! Wanting more. Searching for more.

Einstein once said “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”. 

Sometimes I believe the world is at this point, or extremely close to it. Technology has exponentially advanced in such little time, creating an generation of technologically dependent people. Most questions that are asked are answered with the statements “theres an app for that” or “look it up on google”. Communication with others is limited to sometimes solely texting, or a social media profile. This realm of technology that us humans created have lead to illusion, and change of perception. Writing or posting things through technological devices can send out (no pun intended) messages about yourself that aren’t true or real. For example, It is extremely easy to say one thing over text but not actually mean it.

A few months ago, my dad mentioned this issue of technology taking over our human interactions. He said “Trust in others is diminishing as time goes on”. When I asked him why he believed that, he stated “Before phones and social media, when you asked someone to meet somewhere, you would set a place and time and hope they’d keep their word of being there. Keeping your word means nothing now. Words are twisted because people are hiding behind screens to communicate”. These words stuck to me and really made me think. Real face-to-face communication is becoming less and less common because of the world of technology that is only growing greater and greater. Many think that using technology brings the world closer, but its only isolating us from the world in front of us, and experiencing life in the moment. Why focus on a screen when there is the beauty of nature and life all around us? I ask myself this question a lot, especially after finding myself attached or in need of my phone. I realize that I am living a much healthier, less stressful life without technology. 

This generation is chained to technology, and basically runs our lives. Every social gathering, event, concert, or fun experience is filled with almost every person on their phones. Why capture every moment on technology rather than actually experiencing it? This thought angers me, and it’s only going to get worse. I feel extremely saddened when I see children as little at 3 playing on iPads and other technology devices. Wouldn't you rather teach your child that the root of fun experiences comes from being outside and experiencing the world, rather than technological world that isn’t real and natural? 

I hope we can make a difference in this world, and appreciate our experiences and lives without technology, before it is too late. I hope the future generations aren’t full of idiots, as Einstein said he feared.

Recently, my friend was involved in an extremely disappointing and shocking situation. 

Jr, is my best friend who is currently attending school at Rutgers university. Two nights ago, she went out for the night to a bar downtown in New Jersey. As she began dancing, a crowd of young men surrounded her. She didn’t think much of it, all until they began touching her inappropriately and speaking degrading words towards her. She tried ignoring the comments and actions, as she continued dancing in a different area and pushing their bodies away from hers. Once the men continued to violate her space, Jr was confronted by the owner of the bar. He stated in an annoyed manner “I’m not dealing with this tonight. You need to leave the bar” confused and shocked, Jr said “why am I getting kicked out for being violated by THESE men?” he ignored her comment and proceeded to escort her out of the bar. Infuriated, she approached the police a block away and discussed her situation. To her surprise, as she expected protection from the policemen, the officers said “This is so unimportant. Please just go home” in a condescending tone. She wondered why she was getting punished and laughed at for being, in a sense, sexually assaulted. She felt so alone, afraid, and angered at the same time. Once she got back to her apartment she immediately called the police to file a report on the sexism and unprofessional activity that occurred in that bar.

Why is it socially accepted to dismiss women that are sexually assaulted, violated, or mistreated by men? And why is a situation that is CLEARLY the male’s wrongdoing, ALWAYS pinpointed on the woman? For example, it is common that when rape or sexual assault occurs, we blame the woman for what she was wearing or if she was “asking for it”. Accepting and provoking rape culture is a huge issue that isn’t discussed enough. We need to teach people NOT to rape, rather than telling people how not to GET raped (through how you act, dress, etc). The way a woman presents herself will never be an excuse to violate her in any way. Social norms state that men hold the power, sex is a priority for males, and objectification of women is okay. This leads to sexual violence and the abuse of power. Women are NOT public spaces that exist solely for the male gaze. 

Jr is now aiming to share her story throughout social media and her college campus. She is sick of degraded and treated irrelevant by the way she is constantly mistreated by men. Standing up for yourselves in these situations extremely important. Every individual has a voice that is worth being heard, and I hope Jr’s is too.

Project 1 topic

My project 1 topic will be on the poorest part in Buffalo. For as long as I can remember I have always been interested in poverty and ways to prevent it. My dream job is have my own charity and travel around the world helping those who are less fortunate than I am. This is a topic that is extremely important to me because I feel that everyone should live on equal terms. Too many people get stuck in unavoidable situations that causes them to be unsuccessful. I want everyone to have the same opportunity that someone like me has had in this country. I Understand that Buffalo is one of the poorest parts in Buffalo so I feel like this will be a great topic to do my project on.  I feel that many people will be interested in our class considering that we are all living in the city for the time being. It would interest some people in this class if I talked about important things in The city of Buffalo. We all know that poverty has been a huge problem here in the United States of America. The city of Buffalo is the one of the poorest cities in America. I would like to come up with something in my project that would address this problem. I want to show what the city has been doing to fix the poverty rates in this specific area. I also want to come up with ways to prevent this problem that we call poverty in that area. statistically the eastern part of Buffalo is the worst part. That area not only has the highest crime rates, This area also is the poorest. But that is expected. When ever you have a poor area you can expect the areas crime rates to be extremely high as well. For my project I plan on demonstrating my topic with a well organized poster. The poster will have Pictures indicates poverty in that particular area. I also plan on having a bunch of statistics as to why this area of Buffalo has not been excelling from an economic standpoint of view. I want pictures on my poster that shows the efforts that have been made by certain people or groups in order to decrease the poverty rates as well. I feel that my project will come out great. If you have any suggestions or ideas please let me know and I will gladly put them into consideration.

It is great that you are picking a topic that your are so passionate about. I agree with you when you state that you think everybody should live on equal terms. Poverty is a sad and reoccurring issue that is found across the united states and other countries. I am excited to learn about the steps the city of Buffalo is taking (if any) in order to reduce crime and poverty. Do you think what the city of Buffalo is doing is helping? What would you do if you had control over this? I like that you also talk about crime and poverty hand in hand. It is a vicious cycle that i think you should visually show in your project. Do you think being poor and away from the right resources causes people to steal and get involved with crimes? I do. Maybe gun control could fix this. Or do you think that criminals become poor after being in prison or involved in violent acts? Maybe it is a little bit of both. I like this topic a lot, and am intrigued with how you will create this into a visual map.

  I slept almost until 11 o'clock and I still thought I didn’t have enough sleep. Every day, there is a lot of work to do and I feel I don’t sleep enough every day. I believe everyone has the feeling. Always keep awake until two or three in the morning. I have a friend, he is very busy, almost go to bed every day at three A.M, and in a week, he needs to get up at 5 because he needs to work at 6 in the morning.Why we are not getting enough sleep? Do we really have so many things to do every day? What are we doing every day? Why do we sleep less and less? With these questions, I began to ask my friends. (I only ask them about the weekends, because everyone has different schedules on week days.)   First I asked my boyfriend. He said, he usually get up at 9 in the morning on weekends, and then he spend 30 mins to take a shower, later 9:30 to 10 he needs to  eat the breakfast. And then start playing games from 10 to 11, and then to prepare lunch.  After lunch is his study time. From 12 to 3, he usually writes his homework, and then starts watching movies or TV shows to relax, or if he needs to buy food for the week, about 2 hours. So from 3pm to 5pm is his relaxing time. Starting at 5pm, he needs to perpare the dinner, then eat dinner, probably need to use the last 2 hours. (most of the Chinese food needs to be prepared for at least 1 hours, so every day he needs to spend a lot of time to cook. At the 7pm, he will continue to study and do his homework, he will choose to play games when he needs a rest. He usually go to bed around 12 am, but he used to lie on the bed, watching his phone, so he’s not going to sleep until 1 o'clock somtimes until 2. So I about the statistics, on average (weekends), his daily sleep time is 7 hours, the cooking time is 3.5 hours, the stud time is 6 hours, rest time is 5 hours. Shopping time is 2 hours. Because he doesn’t need to work, so he has plenty of time to relax and rest on the weekend. But from his schedule, it shows that he spend a lot of time on video game and smartphones. This shows that modern technology and the network has become a part of our life, especially in our generation, if the daily life is without a computer, network, smartphones, we will feel that we lost something in our lives, I believe that 99% of people will not not use to live without the network.   And then I asked me another good friend, she and my boyfriend is not the same, she needs to go to work. Every day she sleep 6 hours, 1 hour for a meal, study for 4 hours, 1 hour to take a bath, work 8 hours, the remaining four hours she used to watch movies on the Internet to relax, or play games. Thus, the network has become an inseparable part of the modern people. She is so busy and tired every weekend but she still choose to spend few hours for the internet. So I believe that the Internet is one of the most important reasons that causes us to sleep less and less. Of course I need to do more research to get an answer. My friends around me have given me a lot of help. I will continue to study until I get a more perfect answer.

This is is very interesting topic that many people do not take into consideration. I have personally noticed as well that I get less and less sleep the older I get. There are more demands for education, responsibilities, and social life that causes people to get little sleep. It is known that humans are supposed to get at least 8 hours of sleep, which seems so unrealistic especially in the generation. I agree with you that technology is a big culprit of our loss of sleep. Technology distracts us and is a huge reason for procrastination when attempting to complete something important. Because technology is so abundant in today’s society, we believe that we can multitask important tasks with watching tv, texting, scrolling through social media and more. It is important that we spend time on taking care of ourselves (eating, exercising, working, etc) which is time consuming in a beneficial way. We need to focus on what is consuming our time in negative ways in order to decrease that spending time in order to gain more sleeping hours. This topic is very interesting and I am excited to see what you put together visually!

My Project

I am very happy that for this class, I get to do a project on a topic of my choice. And for my topic I chose to discuss the lying and cheating that goes on within the organization that is the New England Patriots, and the guy that so many love to hate, Tom Brady. In this research project, that now I know so much about research projects thanks to that very, very long article we read about research papers and projects, I will be going through the various steps of a proper research project and following the given guidelines for this specific project. For this project, we have to do a lot of research, which I have done. I have looked up a lot of information on these cheaters called the New England Patriots, and I do not like them. It very well could be because they are the rival team of my favorite team in all of sports, the Buffalo Bills, or maybe it could be because they are just so darn good and I am bitter about it. They go to the Super Bowl every few years, they win the division almost every single year, and worst of all they beat the Bills like 20 out of the last 22 games they played each other. And as much as it pains me to type this right now, despite all of the cheating allegations, Tom Brady might be the best quarterback of all time. They have done everything from “Spy-gate” back in the early 2000′s, more recently “Deflate-gate” which took over Sportscenter and ESPN for about 8 months, and most recently “Headset-gate” and within my project and my web I will delve deeper into each of these scandals. My goal is to get my class and my peers to prove these guys guilty and so that they hate them just as much as I do. Hopefully they are already Patriot haters in the class so I have people to agree with me, and also hopefully there are not any Patriot fans that I have to hear crap from. When I present this project, I plan to create a poster of all of their different scandals and all of the bullshit that this team gets away with and that includes quarterback Tom Brady, head coach Bill Belichick, and team owner Robert Kraft who are all suspicious and most likely guilty for their actions. I do not like the Patriots and I hope one day they get stripped of all of their Super Bowl titles because they are all cheaters. Thanks for reading and I hope you all enjoy my project.

This is a really interesting topic. I am not a huge sports or football fan, but because it talks about the corruption of the Patriots football team, I would love to learn more. I have never heard of any of these scandals before, which makes me excited to see the presentation of your project. Do you think the Patriots are the only sports teams that are “cheaters”? I also wonder if money and bribery is used to cheat when it comes to the teams that are most popular or win the most. It is sad that some sports aren’t about teamwork and the real game of football. Publicity and the media have changed football in a negative way. It is sad that Tom Brady is perceived as the most talented and attractive football player, when he could possibly be a “cheater”. How are you setting up your visual map of this project? Maybe it would be interesting if the map was on a layout of a football field. Again, i can’t wait to hear more about this topic, as it is a hushed topic that many aren’t familiar with.

The Silver Screen

To date, I have defined and viewed my life as a film being continuously captured through the lenses I call my eyes. With every blink a different shot has pieced together the varied experiences, events, and stories created through the interactions and relationships in my life. I believe that my connectivity with film, and how I see the world, is the reason for the immense passion I have to create this form of art.

Even as a young child I was always fascinated with film.  While my friends were playing dolls and dress up I was posing my dolls and dressing up my friends to star in “films”.  When I received an Apple Desktop my true passion for film was realized from the moment I turned it on, discovered iMovieHD, and began filming.  I was so intrigued with the entire process I spent my weekends writing scripts, producing movies and editing my work. Learning new techniques as I filmed, my creativity blossomed. Figuring out certain effects, cuts, sequences, and audio inputs came to me with ease. I spent hours in my room tediously editing each movie I filmed; loving every single second I spent developing my skills. These early attempts at film production enabled me to find my true niche; filmmaking. Later, as I became more intrigued in the process, my fascination with the “behind the scenes” aspect of film and television intensified and my ambition to be part of the film industry was validated when I participated as an extra in the film, Alphabet Killer, directed by Rob Schmidt in Rochester, New York. As the director cued “action”, the cooperation and precise direction to create one simple scene inspired me to learn more. The hidden world behind a film had caught my attention, and I was hooked.  

Last year during my first year of college as a part of the Television and Film Arts major, I created a short film with four people. I was selected as the cinematographer, responsible for recording each shot on a DSLR camera. This experience was both challenging and extremely constructive. I fell in love with the process of taking a simple idea written in words, and creating them into a beautiful vision for people to watch. I knew after this, I would be continuing the creative process of film for the rest of my life. This year as a sophomore, I am developing my education and experiences with film even further. I am extremely grateful to be a part of a program that is communicating my passion for film in a beneficial way.

Free Fall

Adrenaline. One of my favorite feelings in the entire universe. The rush is an overwhelming force of energy that I’ll always crave.

On this day, a few friends and myself decided to make a spontaneous trip to Akron Falls in New York. The ride was short and sweet, as we blasted music and felt the warm summer air rush through the car. 

When we arrived, the endless forest cleared out into beautiful waterfalls pouring into a transparent pool of water. People were perched among the rocks surrounding the water, laughing, conversing, and basking in the rays of sun. Everyone was so welcoming and kind. This waterfall had two natural rock platforms that people were jumping off of. The first platform flooded with people, holding hands and plummeting into the water. The second platform was of great height, and a rush of fear filled my body before anyone dared to jump off. I knew I would never have the guts to jump from so high. After watching a few others, I decided to begin hiking up the hill besides the waterfall to the first platform. I climbed cautiously over several slimy rocks and set foot on the first platform. My nerves began to rush intensely through me, and I could feel my heart bumping through my chest. I grasped my friends hand and counted to three, and my body fell instantly through the air. I screamed as I felt butterflies fill my stomach, and before I knew it my body was immersed in the cool water. Once I reached the surface for air, I screamed with joy and excitement. 

Later that day I had jumped off of that platform several times, feeling more and more comfortable with the height. Pure joy had taken place of my nerves, and I wished this day would never end. Some of my guy friends decided to be daredevils and jump of the highest platform, so I followed them up to take videos. They waited on the edge of the cliff, collecting their thoughts and showed faces of fear. After several minutes of watching others jump, I walked over to the edge of the cliff and stared down into the water, looking even farther away than I imagined. “Just do it, you won't regret it” someone behind me stated. I thought about what he said and began considering the jump. “Fuck it” I said, and I set my things down and places my feet on the edge of the rock. Minutes passed as I contemplated jumping or just turning my back and walking away. I didn’t know if I could do this, and was extremely fearful of falling freely for so long. The people surrounding the rocks a ways below me began to count from 10. My heart began to race faster and faster. The orchestra of voices chanting for me to jump was almost comforting in a way, and I knew I had to just jump. I heard them reach “ONE” and my feet lifted away from the solid ground. My stomach felt as if it was sliding to my head, and I was completely weightless. The exhilaration made me speechless and unable to react mid air. My vision went black and my body had torpedoed into the water. I quickly swam up to surface with the widest smile and triumphant feeling. My fisted hands raised into the air with joy as everyone around me clapped and cheered. That feeling of pure adrenaline was the greatest feeling in the world, and I will never forger it.
