observantfragment:
It watches ava scramble away..and looks down at lethc.. Someone is mcfucking pissed,it lungs forward but stops mid lung once it realizes what lethc has pulled out.
The creature stares at the knife,letting out a high shrill distorted noise..laughter..? It’s hard to tell,it runs a tongue made of small yellow lights over its “lip”. It lungs again.
Ava has managed to get pretty far,he looks back towards the strange void sector,“⏳Come on lethc..” “⏳Get out of there..”
[ * Tch... He throws the knife at the creature and scrambles backward. He heard that voice--he’ll follow it. Once he is fairly sure he’s not in danger of being snapped in half, he spins on his heel and begins to sprint for Ava. ]
[ * He’s putting all his cards into this thing being tied to the desert... ]
I could give you a rundown of the legend of the Lethe river if you don't know about it! You could look it up on the Undernet, but I'll tell you! Basically, it's a Greek mythological legend about a river in Hade's Underworld. Hades is the God of Death, so his Underworld is full of nasty things! Drinking any amount of water from the Lethe river will cause one to forget absolutely everything! So maybe you fell down, and had a nasty bump to the head? The Void is sort of an afterlife....
* hmm .... i see ..... that is very interesting
* i can see where you are coming from ..
* im not sure if i actually drank water and that caused my amnesia.. but something must have caused it
* ..... i am curious now
Could you get someone to look into your code and tell you who you are and what timeline you came from? Could they repair your code and restore your memories? Or does it not work like that?
* hmm ..... well ...... i guess they could ....... but i dont really know anyone ..... ive met a few people .... but none that ...... i think i could call “friend” .. just yet ... and im not sure id be comfortable with near-strangers poking around ..... in my files
* i dont know why i have no memories ..... it could be just a simple 0 to 1 change ... or it could be a lot more complicated ......
[ * LETHE is pondering your words. Why does he have no memories...? Strange. ]
What's the earliest possible thing you can remember?
* ... hmm ....... well ..... i suppose it would be ..... opening my eyes to this darkness--this void ..... my desk is as it always was, or so i thought .... but everything around it was black now ....... like my room had been picked up .. and moved
* but of course ...... i cant really remember anything before that .... maybe this is how its always been ..... maybe that was just the moment i became aware of my consciousness ..... who’s to say? not i
Did you name yourself Lethe because of your amnesia, or was that name just stuck in your head? Do you happen to know of the Mythological story of the Lethe river? Maybe that's why you don't have any memories; you drank from a bad river! You should be more careful with your choice of beverage in the future!
* .... well ...... i dont actually know ...... when i woke up, that was the name logged into this computer ....... so i just took it for myself
* after all, i do feel strongly that ...... this is my computer ... my workspace ....
* no, however .... i didnt know about that river ....... perhaps i did so ...... i will note it down for future research
Yet you have forgotten yourself, yes? How does one go about gaining their sense of self back after losing it? Is there anything that could cause someone to willingly throw their sense of self away, or is it always the result of an accident?
* i have ...... or--at least, who i used to be .....
* i have records of my “Self” but i cannot remember them
* so i have .... created a new “Self” ..... at least until i make a revelation of some sort. perhaps there are reasons--saving loved ones for example
* i do not know why my “Self” has been lost. there is nothing on record, and i cannot remember
* perhaps i saved someone
* perhaps i thought i saved someone
Do you believe that ignorance is bliss? That's it's better to be forgotten and to forget, to succumb to oblivion, rather than face a horrible past and the countless amount of sins you've committed? I'm not accusing you of anything, I'm simply curious to hear your opinion on the matter.
* ....... you pose ....... an interesting question
* there are many answers to it
* if, perhaps ...... there is a piece of trash on the ground ...... and one walks by, seeing it--but doing nothing ...... and a second who does not notice ...... who is at fault? i knew some who would answer the One who has Seen but done nothing .... and some who would answer the One who is Blind .....
* but. really ..... is there a true right answer?
* to forget and be forgotten would surely be ..... “easier” perhaps .... but if one were to throw away everything that they have lived through, would you not also be throwing away your Self ?
* perhaps that would be the true nonexistance--to exist is to feel and breathe and laugh and love and cry. without that, what are you ?
observantfragment:
Ava landed and rolled several feet,only a few from the border he lays there dazed for a moment before rolling onto his stomach,“"standing”“ on three limbs as best as he couls,he hesitates looking between the border and lethc, before scrambling towards it as fast as he could.
Meanwhile the creatures lurched at lethc,jaws wide open,distorted static and voices could be heard within the creatures jaws..and lethc gets a good idea view of the inside of its mouth as it lurches towards him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ countless of white upside down hearts and little golden lights coat the inside of its mouth and down into its throat. Both of the hands of the clock that made up the creatures eye were pointed at lethc,yes in fact every clock on its body had its hands pointed at lethc.
[ * Hoo boy. LETHE didn’t know a lot about void clock monsters, but he was sort of beginning to think they were a nuisance and should be avoided whenever possible. Also--weak spot revealed? This was about the time the boss music kicks in, right? ]
[ * He bent over backwards, attempting to duck under this giant maw and dart to the side. He backed up a bit and positioned himself between Ava and this...creature. How was he supposed to hold it off, he asked himself, frowning. Could it be killed? Could it chase them forever, or was it bound to the sand? He reached inside his coat pocket for something--anything--and got...a butterknife. Well. He’d just have to make do. ]
[ * He waved his cutlery in front of him in what he hoped was a threatening manner. Yeah. Lookit. Now he’s armed. Dangerous? Eh. Debatable. ]

[If felt as if everything slowed,at least to ava,he shut his eyes as the device went off,the creature shrieks at the fog. Avas eye sting and he let’s out a soft hiss,blinking..] [The next noise to come out of the creatures mouth almost sounds like words,distorted,garbled words. But ava ignored it,eyes shut tight trying to drown out the noise going on within his own skull.] [The creature goes flat on its “"Stomach”“ and squints,black eyelids covering half of the clock that served as its eye,it couldn’t see] [loading file…] [The world stutters…] [Then it seems as if nothing has happened,The theif got away,into the desert where she couldn’t see him,not that she could see in general..] [Load fail] [The creature lets out a low growl,tail lashing as its body disovles into the sands of the desert]
[ * LETHE didn’t chance looking back or even slowing down. He did, however, notice the growing silence. No more snarls and growling–no more thumping and swishing sand. Did they really lose it? ]
* can you see …. is it gone …… do you know ……..?
[ * He didn’t want to risk stopping but his chest was beginning to burn. His side was growing stitches and the desert sand was really reminding him of how much he’d love a glass of water. ]
[Ava squints,vision blurred] *I’m pretty sure it’s gone..I don’t see it..I think it gave up..! [The end of the void was coming into veiw,white sky’s turning into black with stars,the ground was starting to harden,suddenly something burst from the ground,sending both fragments flying. Ava yelps as he hits the ground and slides,the border between the two sectors was so close,yet the familiar growl could be heard as the creature reformed,looming over the duo]
[ * Shit. ]
[ * Profanity and curses were all he could think as he sailed through the air. He managed to right himself enough to land, somewhat, on his feet--but he fell to his knees from the shock and looked up at this monstrosity. His glance strayed over to the border. They couldn’t both make it at a stand-still--but... ]
* ..... run for it ..... ill hold this thing off .....! go! now!!

[ * It was Christmas Day. LETHE sat at his desk, poking away at his old machines, and thought perhaps he was happy. Yes, quite. He smiled to himself and folded his long and boney fingers and looked up into the "sky" of darkness. Perhaps it snowed just a little. But by God, he was content. ]
lethc:
[ * LETHE blinked…very slowly. What a strange, pudgy creature… He lowered his head to be eye-level and sort of gazed absently at Sans for an uncomfortably long time. Then his head tipped to the side…inquisitively. ]
* … you seem ….. familiar …….
[ * But he straightened as the lab owner addressed him again. Scram…what a funny word. Perhaps he smiled a bit. LETHE turned his gaze to the corner that was pointed out. If he was anyone else he might have been insulted–but he wasn’t really. He slunk over and sat himself down crosslegged in front of the bowl. He picked it up and began examining it… How interesting. ]
* i will stay ….. because i do not know how to leave..
[ * Simple and yet probably very frustrating to admit. He tapped at the bowl a couple of times with his grossly long fingers… and then put it down and just stared, unblinkingly, at Gaster. ]
Sans followed the orders, keeping his gaze away from the staring fragment and disappearing between towering boxes of research. The sound of an old coffee machine wheezed to life soon after, the glug-glug-hiss of the filter beginning to squeeze the off-brand coffee beans adding to the swirl of machinery in the room.
Gaster tsked at the fragment and their uselessness. It was a situation neither of them wanted to be in, and their willingness to sit in the corner was the only redeeming factor. He walked over to the folder on his desk, opening it up to read, the words of the fragment being lost to the chug of the coffee and the metallic gurgling in the walls.
This continued on for several long minutes until Sans returns, holding two cups of coffee that trailed ribbons of steam. He pushed the one that said ‘Copper Tellirium’ over to Gaster, sipping on his own, grinning as he waited for Gaster to stop reading. He knew he shouldn’t but his eyes kept drifting over to the fragment, dragging his gaze back every time he realized it had wandered closer. Their bone-white face covered in trench-like cracks was so familiar yet alien, just knowing they were there causing his spine to straighten up further.
“Sans,” spoke Gaster, yanking his assistant’s attention to him, “there are some points here that should be explained further in depth. Grab a seat.” Sans’ mind immediately located where his chair was: at his desk; the desk that the stray fragment was closest to.
He remedied this by going over and sitting in Gaster’s chair.
“Sans.” The tone held a threat.
Sans felt perspiration build up at the back of his neck, eye glowing as he pulled the other chair over. Gaster grumbled, grabbing Sans by the collar like a disobedient cat and depositing him into his real seat. The two then began chatting, Gaster bringing up the theories in Sans’ work while Sans explained himself.
They spoke as if the fragment was no longer there, though Sans’ eye still stole peeks.
[ * Anybody else would’ve probably been offended by this lack of acknowledgement. LETHE either didn’t care or was very good at pretending he didn’t. Either way he seemed mildly uninterested in the conversation these two strangers were having without him--until he caught the short one glancing at him. ]
[ * Okay now he was really curious. ]
[ * He stood slowly after he was pretty sure the one with the big thighs had lost whatever little interest they’d had in him and attempted to read the notes and papers over their shoulders. He stayed in his corner, of course--he said he would--but he was dying to know what could be more important than some weirdo just randomly appearing in your lab from nowhere. ]
[ * And he quickly discovered that, of the things he could make out, he didn’t understand a single word. That...was rather disappointing. He let out the softest sigh and reached deep into his coat pocket, pulling out some weird, oval shaped device. He began to fiddle with it, unfolding the bits and pieces of metal until it turned into a cube--and then a triangle--and then back to an oval. If either of them were to look over, he’d seem...even a bit angry at this thing. ]
[ * He leaned absently against the desk and pulled out a pair of small, lens-less glasses and put them on. LETHE looked over to this strange duo. Maybe one of them would catch his eye again. Being ignored was so boring. ]

Nothing happened,the desert was quiet save for the ticking of clocks.
Ava looked around,the cost was still clear..it seemed the creature seemed to vanish..until the ground under them shifts..tiny lights appear on the ground near by,and the creature bursts out of the ground screeching,jaw agape,suddenly several..so many..hearts appear in its chest…all flashing green,holding the creature still,who hisses and snarls at the two fragments. “L..Lets get out of here..!..I can’t hold that for long..” He’s wincing and has to wheeze out that sentence .
[ * Oohoo.. that is very not good. LETHE dug his heels into the sand and began to run away. He stumbled a bit at first, trying to get his footing, but he was off soon enough. He wasn’t sprinting–but hopefully it was fast enough to at least outpace the thing. ]
* jus t… . keep an eye on it …… tell me if it starts to gain.. on us. ….
[ * He was reminded of how long it had been since he’d pushed himself like this. And–he also prayed his back and lower torso would hold out for the duration of the desert. ]
[Ava clung to the other,staring back at the creature,unfortunately once they were only a mere 50 yards away,the green on the creatures many souls began to fade,90 yards and the creature started moving towards them,screeching at the top of its probably existent lungs] “It’s moving again..!” [Ava’s grip tighten on lethc,looking terrifies. the creature seemed to be having trouble gaining on them,but it was gainig..even if it was slow in progress]
[ * A soft “tsk” sound probably came from this frustrated fragment. He cast a few glances over his shoulder to determine the danger... It was getting closer. Not good. He hefted Ava a bit and reached into his coat. LETHE pulled out a ball of metal about the size of an apple--there was an old watch stuck on the front of it. He wound it up and pulled some sort of pin with his teeth... and chucked it back towards the creature. ]
* dont look at it. its going to blind the thing. .. . hopefully,
[ * A few moments later, the device exploded in a flash of light and smoke. If the light itself hadn’t gotten its attention, the irritating agent within the smog would. ]
