Why?
The information on this blog is very important. It will help a parent notice the signs of autism in their children. On top of that, it will help the parent know how to help the child adapt and succeed socially in a world that is rapidly advancing. It also will help parents know they are not alone in this. There are many resources that can be used to help with care of an autistic child. The goal is to gain followers who will share their stories and encourage other parents.

There are different stages of interventions to help a person with autism become adjusted to daily life. Early Intervention: -Applied Behavior Analysis -Early Start Denver Model -TEACCH -Pivotal Response Training Later Intervention: -Applied Behavior Analysis -Social Skills Training -Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Other Therapies: -Pharmacological -Occupational Therapy -Speech Therapy
Educational Considerations
There are different considerations for education for those with autism
-Special education (self contained classes vs. Inclusion) -Academic performance is independent of difficulties that may be in the school environment -The social interest is there, but the ability to act on that interest is lacking -There are some difficulties interpreting social nuances (speech, dress, mannerisms, reciprocity, body language, facial expression) -Education quality can vary based on region -There can be some difficulty with transitioning to long term assignments -The lack of peer relationships is more of a stress for parents than for the adolescents themselves
Family Considerations
There are different things family’s should consider while caring for a loved one with autism. -Maternal stress is relative to a child’s behavior. Paternal stress is relative to the mother’s behavior. -There can be a great deal of financial stress while providing care -Siblings may have a higher rate of behavioral issues.
Social Relatedness
Socially, people with autism have several slight difficulties. These include -Lack of social,emotional reciprocity -Problems maintaining and initiating interactions (lack of friendships) -Socially withdrawn -Difficulty with nonverbal communication -Blurred line between people and objects -Inappropriate use of eye contact (look away during conversation)
Language
Pragmatics of language: -Avoid eye contact when communicating -Less responsive to human voices -Miss nonverbal social cues -Less dialogue, more monologue, less topic maintenance, less presupposition -behavioral repercussions Semantics of language: -Many individuals nonverbal or minimally verbal -Regression in language development -Some delayed vocabulary growth -Some word-retrieval problems, and using words they cannot define/spell appropriately
Joint Attention
Joint attention starts early and evolves from coordinating around object (visual) to ideas, intentions, or emotions (ToM)
There are two types - RJA(follow a gaze, head turn, follow a point) and IJA(eye contact and deictic gestures to initiate coordinate attention).
There is a socially shared aspect of interaction.
Diagnosis
Autism can be diagnosed as early as 2 years, but most are diagnosed after 4 years. There are multiple screeners: STAT, M-CHAT, CSBS
Diagnostic assessments: CARS, ADOS, ADI-R
While there are general signs that show the possibility of autism, there is a discrepancy in the time frame of noticeable signs.
General Characteristics
There are multiple characteristics that could be indicators of autism. These include:
Communicative impairments
Deficits in social skills
Deficits in adaptive behaviors
Deficits in coordination of social behaviors
Deficits in reciprocity (Emotion and communication)
Sensory abnormalities
Comorbid conditions
Deficits in theory of mind (Abstract thought)
Restricted/repetitive interests
Abnormal speech patterns
Risk Factors
Autism is a hereditary disorder. The genetic basis for it has yet to be identified. Once a child has been diagnosed with autism, the next siblings have a 2-18% chance of be affected.
Another risk factor has to do with age. As the father’s age increases, so does the probably of selecting sperm cells with gene mutations due to environmental exposures. As the mother’s age increases, so do pregnancy complications and chromosomal changes which could result in autism.
