Toronto, Ontario -- The 2016 CNE attracted 1.54 million people during its 18-day run from August 19th to September 5th, as announced today at the Canadian National Exhibition Association’s Annual General Meeting. This marks one of its most highly attended fairs in recent history, closely matching the CNE’s record of 1.6 million visitors in 2015, and an increase of 8% over 2014.
“We are thrilled with this year’s attendance figures; the bar was set very high in 2015 when we had 18 days of perfect weather,” said Virginia Ludy, CNE Chief Executive Officer. “Despite a few days of rain and it being the hottest summer on record, visitors came out in droves thanks in part to some of the new and exciting programming that we offered.”
At the AGM, the Canadian National Exhibition Association (CNEA) also acknowledged the end of term for Brian Ashton, who served as the President of the Board of Directors since 2011. “I would like to thank Brian Ashton for the enormous contribution he has made to the CNEA,” said Ludy. “His leadership has chartered us through some formidable years, stewarding the organization through our independence from Exhibition Place and the City of Toronto and through numerous dialogues about the future of the Exhibition Place and Ontario Place sites. He was also central to the creation of our strategic plan, always seeking out new opportunities and new ways for the CNE to re-invent itself.”
The 2016 CNE introduced two key programs that took the organization in a new direction, while honouring the legacy of its past. The CNE Innovation Garage re-established the CNE’s tradition of being a showcase for “innovation” with three days of tech talks, consumer products and Emerging Innovators Pitch Competitions.
Thanks to a $5.5 million investment by the City of Toronto and Province of Ontario to improve the West Channel of the waterfront for the 2015 Toronto Pan Am and Para Pam Am Games, the CNE was able to successfully return to programming waterfront attractions including daily water ski shows and two premiere competitions including the Nautique WWA Wakeboard World Championships.
Highlights of the 2016 Canadian National Exhibition include:
CNE Innovation Garage on Opening Weekend,
The Great Canadian Water Ski Caper on the waterfront,
The Nautique WWA Wakeboard World Championships on the waterfront,
Hit List: a new Aerial Acrobatics & Ice Skating Show starring Joannie Rochette and Elvis Stojko (for three days),
RUSH: Parkour Competitive Demonstrations,
Artists from Croatia, Switzerland and Cuba featured on the International Stage,
