The last thing he remembers was hearing her piercing scream and complete darkness. The crash was fast: one second Brendon and you were coasting down the road jamming to some oldschool Journey, the next minute you are swerving off the railings. He remembers the fear in your eyes before the first hit.
His eyes slit open and props up on his elbow, only to collapse back down unable to lay any weight on his presumably broken arm. He uses his other arm to readjust himself back to a upwards position, eyes still groggy and unable to at first make out the interior of the ambulance he lay in. His senses slowly creep back as he starts to notice the sounds of sirens and rumbling, as the doors of the ambulance swing open and the paramedics walk in. He looks around dazed and confused-
“What… uh… What's going.. What's going on?”
“Its alright, its alright, you were in a bad car accident. Your car swerved off the road over the railings. We’re going to bring you inside please just lay still”
His mind quickly woke up as he realized instantly what he was missing
“Where’s Y/N? Where’s my wife-”
“Sir we are taking care of her but we need to bring you inside right now-”
“Im not going fucking anywhere until I know where she is. Where is she, where-”
He sees past the paramedics trying to wheel him out of the ambulance a group of doctors rushing inside pushing a stretcher quickly into the building. The scene was utterly chaotic- doctors shouting orders, ambulance lights flashing, sirens wailing- but through all the commotion he saw only what he could think of in his nightmares: you on a stretcher being rushed to the ER.
“Y/N”
“Sir, we’re taking care of her, we need to get you-”
“Y/N!” he continues to scream, trying to push himself of the stretcher to jump out of the ambulance, but the hospital staff hold him down and prevent him from rushing after you. His nightmare grows swiftly as he regains consciousness to only reveal more of the tragedy in front of his eyes: bloody staff member gloves pushing your stretcher as a paramedic walks leaning over the stretcher containing some bleed. He panics and fights with the staff to come be with you, only then realizing the pain he felt himself. His adrenaline slowly faults and the pain surges throughout his body. He calms for a moment allowing the paramedics to start removing him from the ambulance and into the hospital. As he lays he looks down at his shirt, stained with blood. What was more horrifying than the sight of the immense blood on his shirt was the unanswered question of whose blood it is… yours of his. He pushes those thoughts out of his mind and tries to focus on the external surroundings.
His mind a mess from the pain and his vision a blur, he gets lost in the bright lights and can't keep his mind clear. Doctors and nurses fly in and out checking his pulse, reflexes, consciousness. The air fills with sirens, screams, cries, shouts, muffled conversations. His eyes slowly drift close as his body succumbs to the pain, falling asleep.
“Bren… Bren…”
Brendons eyes groggily open and squint at the harsh fluorescent lights above. In front of him is Kenny smiling as Brendon regains consciousness. Nicole and Dan, noticing he is finally awake, rush over to the bed Brendon lay in and sit on the end.
“Hey man- good to see you.”
Brendon looks down and examines the extent of his injuries as the guys catch him up on what happened. A broken arm, broken ribs, and everything and anything in between bruised up. They explain that by the time they got there Brendon was already out of surgery to fix his broken ribs, and has been in and out of consciousness since but the staff said he will be ok. He looks over next to him to see the machines buzzing and blinking that he is hooked up to.
“What-- how..”
“You look like hell man” Dan said, jokingly to make Brendon smile. Truth was he really did. But as relieved Brendon was to see his friends, he was overwhelmed with panic as he realized you were nowhere to be seen.
“Where’s Y/N..” he asks Kenny, standing next to his bed. Kenny crossed his eyes and gives a sorrowful look at Nicole, who nods him to tell Brendon what happened.
Kenny looks down “You made is out banged up pretty bad, but you got lucky. Y/N wasn't as lucky. She got banged up… really bad. She is still in surgery right now..”
Brendon tries to lift himself up with his good arm as Nicole sweetly places her hand over his leg on the end of the bed.
“Zack is with her, but we can go wait for her if you are up to it.”
The minutes tick by like hours. The air is thick with suspense and the only noise audible is the constant ticking of the clock- reminding everyone how long you have been in surgery. Brendon sinks in the waiting room chair, sinking his head down into his chest, still processing the events of the crash as explained by Dan. Tears threaten his eyes as he rethinks everything. Could he have stopped the car earlier? What was that truck thinking? What was the last thing you said to him? Unable to quiet his pacing mind that was throbbing from the pain, he finds his way out of his chair and out the doors of the ER to the steps by the front. Kenny follows him aiding him as a crutch. The doctors requested for Brendon to stay in his bed, but there was no way they were stopping him from being as close to you as he could be. Once outside he rest his aching body against the stone pillar by the stairs and reaches into the inside pocket of his jacket, stained with blood from the crash. He pulls out a joint in the inside pocket from earlier and searches his pocket for a lighter. Kenny walks by and sits on the stairs next to him, reaching up a lighter to him. He lights and watches the joint burn, pieces falling on his fingertips and torching his skin. He takes a puff, and drops his head back, squeezing his eyes shut preventing tears from escaping. For a second, a single second - he doesn’t feel like he is dying.
“Bren…” Kenny looks up at him and clasps his hands, then looking away avoiding direct eye contact- “You ok....”
Brendon looks down and throws the joint on the concrete, snuffing it out with his shoe. He watches the embers slowly die, and a soft desperate laugh escapes his lips out of frustration. He thinks about how every time he smokes, you somehow peep through the room. He loves how you take 1 or 2 hits, and then decided you need your own. He thinks about how you love wearing his sweatshirts because they smell like him… and how you were wearing his sweatshirt the day of the crash. “I just…..” his agitated smirk turns into despair as he again realizes the gravity of the situation. “I fucking…..I can't lose her..”
Time passes slowly as Brendon and Kenny just sit outside in uncomforable silence, both unable to say anthing that will change the current situation. They make their way back into the waiting room and return to their chairs, everyone trying to contatin their anxiety in order to stay strong for each other- mostly for Brendon. He sits in his chair, eyes dead with no expression.
“Mr. Urie?”
Brendon looks up as the surgeon makes his way into the waiting room.
“How is she?” Brendon asks, shootin gup from his chair and whincing in pain- again forgetting thet magnitude of his injuries.
“She got hit pretty badly. Collapsed lung, broken ribs, broken leg, and some internal bleeding. But she made it through the survery- and it looks like she will be okay. You definitly have a fighter on your hands there.”
Brendon’s eyes light up and Nicole comes to his side and squeezes his arm giving him comfort.
“Can he go see her?” Nicole asks the surgeon
“She is sleeping right now, and probably will be for a while until the anesthetia wears off. But yes- only 1 or 2 for now. Later you can all see her”
Zack comes around the corner, his eyes red and puffy from crying- although by now he had collected himself. Zack was never one to be emotionally vulnerable in the slightest. He walks over to Brendon and leaks a comforting laugh and smile and pulls him into a hug, squeezes him tighter than he should have with Brendon’s injuries.
“Dude.. Im so fucking sorry. I got the call and ran down here and-”
“Thank you for staying with her when I couldn’t”
“Of course man”
Zack leads Brendon over to the room where you lay. Brendon takes a deep breath before entering the room, unsure of how he could handle seeing you in such a painful state. From the doorway you looked so peaceful, your hair laying gracefully on the pillow, with your feet peakign slightly from below the blankets. As he walks closer he discovers a different story. Your arms are discolored with bruises and large cuts and scrapes that train from your wrists to your face. Your leg lays in a cast beneath the blanket, and your arm in a sling cradled on your chest. You have a cut across your forehead to by your eye, and your eyes are sunken and dark. The hair that laid so gently was sticky with dried blood- but yet- he has never been so happy to see you. He walks by your bed quietly, cautious not to wake you. He stretches the blanket to cover your feet- he knows your feet always get cold. Brendon eases himself gently on to the bed to lie next to you, careful not to wake you or nudge your achign and broken body. He brushes strands of hair that are stickign to your forehead away, his thumb grazing the stitches of large cuts. He lays there, watching you as if you were going to disappear if he blinked.
After some time, he feels you stir slightly under his touch, and your eyes blink open slowly, only opening halfway as you let out a muffled groan.
“Baby shhhh its ok. Im here”
Your hand slowly grips his and you squeeze so slightly, barely even at all but as much as you could manage.
“Are you in pain- do you need me to call the nurse? I just need to push the button-”
“Bren” you barely make out. You squint as your body starts to recognize the pain and trauma it has experienced.
“Im here Y/N… Im not going anywhere”.
Your eyes open again slightly and then wider as you examine Brendon’s face- dark and sunken. “Bren… this cut what..”
“Shhh shhh its okay. We were in a car accident- but we are going to be okay. Don’t worry about me” he coos, stroking her hair behind her ear and away from her face. He lays facing her and gently kisses her forehead.
He wraps his arms carefully around your broken body, feeling the cuts across your back. You close your eyes and sink your head toward his chest, grasping his shirt in your hands and clutching it. He watches as your clutch softens, as your body forces you back to sleep.
“I love you.” you whisper, until succumbing to the medication and falling asleep. He strokes your hair as you fall back to sleep, feeling your breathing against his body- slow and steady. Brendon watches you sleep- keeping track of your breathing. It is as if he is afraid if he looks away- you will disappear. As he holds you in his arms, his tears finally escape his eyes and quietly stream down his face.
Thinking about writing a part 2 where the reader and Brendon talk about the crash... hmmm yes or no? Love you all xoxo ****also please message me if you are living for Lake Effect Kid because it is just... ugh so good.
