How do you stop feeling guilty about liking TF?

It was never really my intention to become an advice person about sex stuff, so take the following with a big grain of salt. My intention here is to make you and other people with the same issue (and trust me, there are a ton of them, including me at times!) feel better and be able to stress less about something that’s, at the end of the day, pretty innate to you and not something you actively chose. If anything I say has the opposite effect, absolutely disregard it.

First of all, you’re totally not alone in feeling the way you do. A ton of people in TF have expressed the same feelings to me many times, and if you look through fetish message boards or social media sites, you’ll see the same sentiment expressed by people into our fetish or a whole spectrum of others.

The reality is, at some point, we were all either actively or passively taught to feel bad about this stuff, and that sucks big time. I literally just did a cursory google for “percentage of people with a fetish” to see if anything came up that seemed relevant and the first result was a shitty ABC news article pathologizing fetishes, framing them as deviant/criminal, and asking if they could be “cured”. As a bonus, they also insinuate that fetishes are exclusively male (???). There’s heaps of this kind of stuff out there: misinformation, schlock journalism, and bad cultural baggage about our deal, and part of the reason we have to sort through this pile of conflicted feelings about what we like is because of that.

You shouldn’t have to feel bad because someone wanted to use your sexual experience as clickbait, but it’s hard to fight that impulse sometimes. 

Here’s a few thoughts that might help:

1) TF is an unrealizable fantasy. For most of us, this is a hella negative, but one big upside is that it only exists in fiction. Consuming TF porn or acting out TF themed scenarios online or in RL with a consenting partner hurts absolutely no one. Even if the porn you like is darker in tone and includes squickier / more problematic elements, at the end of the day, it’s complete fiction. You close your computer or clean up your props or whatever, and that’s it. As long as you treat people with respect and keep in mind the dividing line between the porn you consume and your everyday life, you’re completely 100% good.

2) TF is not that much different from other, more “vanilla” fetishes. It seems weird at first maybe, but really, it has a LOT of elements of power exchange, D/s, petplay, and sometimes bondage, which are all pretty popular! Fetishizing the “other” is pretty mainstream (if it wasn’t, there wouldn’t be so many vampire romance novels), and fetishizing becoming or having someone else become something “other” isn’t really that far to go from there.

3) You probably didn’t choose to have your fetish. There’s a lot of back and forth on whether fetishes are innate or derive from exposure to certain stuff at a young age, but either way, I’m betting that you didn’t wake up one day and decide that girls turning into dogs (or your particular favorite thing) was gonna be your jam for the rest of your life. If you’re like me, you probably liked it as a kid, didn’t realize what that meant, and then at some point as an adult realized the particular manner in which you liked it and tried to stop.
