Worker solidarity is the future.
i'm both dumber and smarter than you think so don't underestimate me because i'm actually smart about a lot of stuff but also don't be surprised if i'm dumb about some other stuff hope that helps
unfortunately if you are an old friend of mine i will always care about you no matter what even if we haven't seen each other in forever because i still remember what you were like 7 years ago and i still remember how it felt to be young with you and i still have a lot of love for you in the back of my mind
And in these next 50 years you will eat so many delicious meals, laugh so many times with so many people you love, shout and scream and sing and cry and smile so hard your face hurts. And you will see such beautiful sunsets and feel fresh cold air on your face and feel warm and safe wrapped up in your favourite winter coat.
eye-opening tumblr post for me included the words "people are meant to be burdens" as in humans rely on and support one another and it's not a bother it's our purpose; to love and be loved in return. so if you ever think you're being annoying just remember we were made to love and it's going to be okay
my anxiety could never :(
Imagine if people only worked six months out of the year. Half the people would be winter workers who choose to grind through the dark months and then chill and play during the summer, and half of the people would be ones who would rather work through the warm season and then rest and hibernate in peace over the winter, more or less free to choose whichever you like.
There would be families with a strong identity about which season they work in, and people who say that someone "has only ever worked one season" as a way to imply that someone isn't adventurous by nature. There would be parents who agree to take turns working opposite seasons, so one of them can always be at home with the kids, and old folks who lament that their adult children and niblings were Forced By Circumstance to work opposite seasons from them, while the youths in question welcome the work as an excuse to avoid these inconvenient relatives.
You never know if the construction worker up at 6 am in the summer spends their winters writing murder mysteries, or if the winter shift librarian spends their summer cultivating a rare breed of heirloom apples. Or simply meditating, observing nature, living quietly and baking bread. Asking someone "what do you do in your free season?" tells as much, if not more, about the person than "what do you do for a living?" And nobody answers "nothing". Everyone can think of something that they want to do, perhaps not productive, but still enlightening, constructive and cultivating.
Nobody who is in full health and well rested can stand spending half of the year simply doing absolutely nothing.
The legacies people leave behind in you.
My handwriting is the same style as the teacherâs who I had when I was nine. Iâm now twenty one and heâs been dead eight years but my iâs still curve the same way as his.
I watched the last season of a TV show recently but I started it with my friend in high school. We havenât spoken in four years.
I make lentil soup through the recipe my gran gave me.
I curl my hair the way my best friend showed me.
I learned to love books because my father loved them first.
How terrifying, how excruciatingly painful to acknowledge this. That I am a jigsaw puzzle of everyone I have briefly known and loved. I carry them on with me even if I donât know it. How beautiful.
absolutely obsessed with these tags
We seldom admit the seductive comfort of hopelessness.
It saves us from ambiguity.
It has an answer for every question:
"There's just no point."
Hope, on the other hand, is messy.
If it might all work out, then we have things to do.
We must weather the possibility of happiness.
you just know a woman is deeply haunted when she canât even masturbate like thatâs real true genuine anguish and hurt
hate how all these apocalyptic films show society breaking down the hot minute the grid goes down, with all the survivors banding off into tiny violent gangs that prey on each other.
bitch you are a member of one of the most social species in existence! it is actually insane the extent to which humans have evolved to use cooperation as our main survival tool. humans have been building and then rebuilding societies for as long as disasters have been bringing them down. an apocalypse would be fucking awful, but the survivors would end up building communities and networks and pooling resources and knowledge, because thatâs what humans do. thatâs what they DO!!!
#3 million years ago our ancestors put all of their skill points into charisma and tool use and weâve been winging it ever since  tags via OP
This reminds me of a really great video by Sarah Zedig where the second half is her going off on apocalyptic, grimdark shows such as The Walking Dead as a âlibertarian power fantasy where their dogshit ideology is never wrongâ and Iâve never forgotten it.
At its core, the edgelord trope that society would âbreak downâ into violence the instant the cops stop answering the phones is a myth built on cynical belief that humans are - at their core - violent, selfish, cruel animals that are only kept in line with the violent enforcement of âlaw and order.â
Hell, itâs a myth built atop another myth that the police - the legitimate purveyors of state violence - are even competent at all!
Considering their abysmal track record for actually solving crimes and observed reluctance to put themselves in harmâs way, thereâs hardly a case to be made that they are actively keeping society from descending into chaos. And if you think thatâs woke anti-police nonsense, bear in mind that once, when the cops in New York did a work âslowdownâ, crime went down.
Because see, thereâs a second half to the apocalyptic âbreakdown of societyâ myth, the one that appeals to a certain group of people. Itâs the part where, now that society has become the State of Nature, the truly strong, independent, well-armed men of action have carte blanche to ârestore orderâ with brutal, justified violence.
Apocalyptic movies are a popular genre because it takes the standard Hollywood power fantasy and gives it an adrenaline shot of compatible politics: libertarian, every man for himself, Ăbermensch crap. As it depicts the end of the world, with all the pornographic spectacle of chaos and human cruelty, it tells its audience that you wonât succumb when the rest those dumb, weak masses perish. Whether itâs zombies, plague, climate disaster, or solar flares making our cellphones stop working, you specifically (yes you, Kyle!) will rise above it.
And when it does, the strong and rugged will survive and start over. Make things how they âused to be.â Presumably a nice, pure, uncomplicated world suspiciously absent of all those âweakâ folks that had been muddying the waters and getting in the way, before. The ones that had prevented the naturally strong men from reaching their true potential in the Old World.
To the people that truly buy into this garbage power fantasy, the inevitable apocalyptic collapse isnât something to be feared, but prepared for.
Theyâre looking forward to it.
âŠthat last line struck a nerve like an icepick to the skull
Itâs actually really important to confront this kind of ideology because if people believe in it, it causes damage.
I was reading a book once about how people come together in response to disaster (A Paradise Built In Hell by Rebecca Solnitt) and one of the things she talks about is how the aggressive behavior between people in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was a direct result of people expecting each other to act like monsters.
If we do not confront the idea that people are monsters at their core, people will pre-emptively become monsters themselves because they believe they have to do so out of self defense.
Remember when the pandemic hit and all those bomb-shelter bunker boys starting freaking out because âstay home and care about each otherâ isnât the apocalypse they wanted?
we need each other to survive. we wouldn't have made it this far without each other.
I am crying too
as someone with math anxiety, i wish they were my teacher
