When your friend gets into a new fandom and talks about it so much that you are reluctantly pulled into it, too.
“There’s something attractive about experiencing something so different from the day to day. It makes you believe in something a little bit magical. It brings a certain spark to the world again.”
Colin Morgan.
Five animated shorts for five female animation pioneers
For this year’s Annency animation festival, the students at Gobelins made five 1-minute animations to honor five female animation pioneers.
They’re all phenomenal. If you have five minutes, please watch each of them. Warning: some hit HARD.
Mary Blair (1911-1978)
Worked for Ub Iwerks, MGM, and eventually Disney. Known for creating incredibly vibrant watercolors, which clashed with the studio aesthetic at the time. Disney eventually let her loose, and her aesthetic can be strongly seen in Cinderella, Peter Pan, and especially Alice in Wonderland.
Evelyn Lambart (1914-1999)
Hearing-impaired Canadian animator who worked with Norman McLaren on several pieces that the Canadian government would later declare masterworks. She directed her own films, making her one of the first women in animation to take the director’s chair. She was known for scratching up film stock to create “jazz” like patterns, the sort of thing you’d later see in Fantasia, Donald in Mathmagic Land, and the like.
Lotte Reininger (1899-1981)
German director who created the technique of silhouette animation, preceding Disney by 10 years. Started out making titles for movies and moved on to make her own animated feature, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, in 1926! As for the rest of her career, well - watch the short.
Claire Parker (1906-1981)
Created the “pinscreen” animation technique, where 240,000 tiny metal rods were manually manipulated in and out of a board in order to create an animation – think tweaking pixels by hand. She and she alone owned the patent on it.
Alison de Vere (1927-2001)
One of the first women to work in British animation, and was design director for The Yellow Submarine. She went on to create many animated shorts at a commercial studio, winning prizes for virtually almost every single one of them. She is often credited as Britain’s first female animation auteur.
(much credit must go to cartoonbrew for posting about this in the first place - thanks, y’all!)
Chiharu Shiota’s “The Key In The Hand.”
Currently on display at the 2015 Venice Art Biennale in Venice, Italy until November 22nd, 2015 is artist Chiharu Shiota’s gorgeous installation art piece, “The Key in the Hand,” that incorporates over 50,000 keys strung about by bright red string over ominous and mythical looking boats.
The 50,000 keys were collected from participants around the world in a way to preserve and display their individual memories by the artist. As each key is connected by the thousands of strings the art piece becomes a metaphor for a collective consciousness and the idea that we are all in this together.

in my opinion, this is one of the most important songs and videos, that have been made in the last 30 years in Germany, and sadly it has become newsworthy again. the many many refugees coming from syria and other countries to central europe make many people forget, that about 70 years ago, many of their ancestors might have been refugees as well (mine were). most people I know are fiercely on the “refugees welcome” side of things, but there are others. Afraid of the “foreign”, of some vaguely defined “islamistic” threat, afraid that the newcomers only want some kinds of benefits and “stealing our jobs”, while ignoring that noone would risk their life on a rubber boat in the mediterranean sea for fun. If you saw the picture of the drowned toddler on some beach, you know what I mean.
“Schrei nach Liebe” (scream for love) by the punk band Die Ärzte is an Anti-Nazi-Song, that came out in 1993. There is a initiative called #aktionarschloch (#aktionasshole - if you read the lyrics, that name makes a lot of sense), that works to get this video back into the german charts and the minds of people. the band will donate all proceeds from this to the charity ProAsyl.
German/ English lyrics
Schrei nach Liebe
Du bist wirklich saudumm. Darum gehts dir gut. Hass ist deine Attitüde Ständig kocht dein Blut Alles muss man dir erklären, Weil du wirklich gar nichts weißt! Höchstwahrscheinlich nicht einmal, was Attitüde heißt!
Deine Gewalt ist nur ein stummer Schrei nach Liebe. Deine Springerstiefel sehnen sich nach Zärtlichkeit. Du hast nie gelernt dich zu artikulieren. Und deine Eltern hatten niemals für dich Zeit… Ohohoh ARSCHLOCH!!!
Warum hast du Angst vorm Streicheln? Was soll all der Terz?
Ohohoh ARSCHLOCH, ARSCHLOCH, ARSCHLOCH!!!
Scream for love
You are really dumb, which is why you’re doing so well. Hate is your attitude, your blood boils constantly. Everything needs to be explained to you because you really don’t know anything, most likely not even what attitude means!
Your violence is only a silent scream for love, your combat boots long for tenderness, you have never learned to articulate yourself, and your parents never had time for you … ohhh… asshole!
Why do you have fear of caressing, what’s the meaning of all this nonsense? under the laurel wreath with acorns, I know your heart beats, and romanticism isn’t only grey theory for you, in between Störkraft and the Onkelz (nazi bands) is a Kuschelrock LP! (Cuddle rock, a soft rock compilation franchise)
Your violence is only a silent scream for love, your combat boots long for tenderness, you have never learned to articulate yourself, and your parents never had time for you … ohhh… asshole!
Because you have problems that interest nobody, because you have fear of intimacy you are a fascist. You don’t have to project your self-hate on others, so nobody notices what a lovely man you are … ohhh…
Your violence is only a silent scream for love, your combat boots long for tenderness, you have never learned to articulate yourself, and your girlfriend never has time for you … ohhh. Asshole, asshole, asshole!

Decades: Ah, the 90s, a decade so loved that people who were hardly even there still want to claim to be a part of it (90s kidz 4 eva, we get it). The 90s were truly simpler times- destiny had four children, and computer rooms were a thing; we were all just trying to get jiggy with it while doing our best to raise our tamagotchis. Sadly, we’ve grown up and most of us are dreading some form of schooling or work, but it’s okay because this playlist has our backs. Be transported back with almost four hours worth of nostalgic hits; the sad, the mad, the weird and the classic- there’s something for everyone! (click for hq) (listen)
“What we did was to collect 300 children’s testimonies. We asked them to tell their happiest and most saddest day, and have that performed both here at the Old Vic and simultaneously in South Africa they are being performed by the children themselves who inspired the monologues.” - Amber Sainsbury, founder of Dramatic Need, on The Children’s Monologues directed by Danny Boyle. Have you ever thought about how Harry wasted a huge opportunity when he dropped the Resurrection Stone in the Forbidden Forest?
Okay just imagine if he had kept it.
He dies, comes back, defeats Voldemort…
Only now there are over one-hundred people who have died in just The Battle of Hogwarts alone. Not to mention all of those names that were read on the radio throughout the year. (And everyone else who died before then.)
So the Golden Trio gets this idea…
They quickly spread the word and pretty soon, Harry sets up a room in Hogwarts with nothing in it but a desk and a chair. He sits in the chair behind the desk and calls people into the room one at a time.
Harry insists that the Weasleys be the first to enter. And so George walks in, puffy-eyed but smiling, and asks Harry what the big secret is.
Harry then plops an ordinary pebble into George’s hand.
George is very confused until he hears his name being whispered from behind him. George turns and of course there’s Fred. And the two twins are able to properly say goodbye to one another.
Harry then allows the entire Weasley family to come in and they all huddle around Fred’s spirit and are able to say goodbye. And of course Mrs. Weasley drags Harry out from behind the desk and he joins the family hug.
Are you crying yet?
Because I am.
But let’s keep going.
Mrs. Weasley’s hand brushes against the stone and Fabian and Gideon appear to say goodbye to their sister.
After the Weasleys finally leave, Harry brings Dennis in so that he can say goodbye to Colin.
Harry then individually brings in the family member(s) of the unnamed one-hundred students who died during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Harry then brings in Luna so that she can say goodbye to her mother.
He brings in pretty much all of Hogwarts so that they can say goodbye to Cedric.
He brings in Aberforth so that he can say goodbye to Albus and Ariana.
He brings in those who want to say goodbye to Snape.
He brings in Kreacher so that he can say goodbye to Regulus.
He brings in the rest of the house-elves so that they can say goodbye to Dobby.
And when Harry is done letting everyone else say goodbye to their loved ones, he closes his hand around the stone.
The first one to appear is a beautiful white owl who flies over to Harry and allows herself to be affectionately petted.
Then of course the others appear, just as they did in the Forbidden Forest on that fateful night. Harry doesn’t talk to them for too long, he’s grown up a lot since the Mirror of Erised, but he is able to make peace with his loved ones’ sacrifices.
And even then, he still keeps the stone.
He doesn’t use it again. Not personally, anyway. In fact, he stores it in a dusty box on the mantel in his house. He doesn’t use it. But he doesn’t forget it, either. Because he needs it for one last task.
And when the boy with the turquoise hair is old enough to understand, Harry gently sits him down and places a stone in his hand.
And Teddy Lupin meets Remus and Nymphadora.

Vintage Photographs Are Digitally Transported Into Whimsical Fantasy Worlds by Jane Long
Australian artist Jane Long digitally manipulates vintage black and white photographs into surreal, whimsical worlds, where their subjects are given a second life in her series Dancing with Costica. The images she utilizes are photographs from WWI, which were capture by Romanian war photographer Costică Acsinte.
Although Long has received some flack from viewers about altering the meaning and the subjects’ true identity, she explains: “I wanted people to see these figures as real people, more than just an old photograph. Adding colour completely changes our perception of images.”
The stunning collection will be exhibted at Ballarat International Photo Biennale from August 22nd to Septmeber 20th.
