‘there is always hope,’ she chimes with an affirmative nod, and a small giggle at his introduction that echoed her own. ‘well levi who almost trips over girls who get distracted by clouds and sometimes forgets his manners - i have a super idea!’ jal exclaims whilst raising her pointer finger into the air. without a moment to wait, she dashes off, her short legs extending as far as they can as she strides down the walkway, only stopping to look behind her at levi, ‘are you coming?’

“Right—hope.” he mumbled lowly to himself. His brows shooting up in intrigue as the little ray of sunshine points upwards. He gives his neck a slow rub contemplating if he should follow the smaller girl. He watched as she sprinted ahead of him, a small sigh escaping his lips as he lightly jogged to keep up. “Lead the way niñita. You better not be secretly leading me to my doom.”

she couldn’t help but laugh along as levi laughed at the prospect of his mom flying out his make-believe girlfriend to oakport, knowing her dad would probably be the exact same way. she cast a glance at him but he was staring out at the ocean in thought, so she resumed the same. she cringed just a little as he mentioned not drinking anymore, wishing she had been a bit more sensitive as she didn’t know the man’s story. luckily, he passed by the subject, not letting her linger in her guilt for too long, ‘ is it? oh, no, don’t tell me that, ‘ she said with a slight laugh, ‘ i’m still holdin’ out hope for my soulmate. ‘

He couldn’t help but feel slightly jealous when she mentioned holding out for her soulmate. His brows furrowed unintentionally, his eyes staying on the ocean. He wish that he hadn’t met who he thought was his soul mate so early in life. Thinking of his ex still gave him heart-ache.  He couldn’t decide if the ache was from guilt or the remainder of his love. “I’m sure you’ll meet your soulmate kid.” he said calmly, “Just make sure they aren’t anything like I was when I was young.”

“Well I wouldn’t bet on me being in a relationship this timt next year but…. anyway”, she raised her eyebrows. She had never been someone who was in long-term relationships but after her parents died, she simply didn’t feel like letting anybody in her life again. At least in a romantic sort of way. Staring into the distance, she fell silent. Normally she didn’t like it to just sit around without talking or anything but at the moment she just didn’t feel like talking about her messed up life anymore. “I’m Lauren by the way”, she said after a while, holding up one of her hands for him to shake.

“I mean i wouldn’t bet on me being in one either, but like I said stranger shit has happened.” he explained with a shrug. He didn’t want to be dating nor had any interest in getting married again. So far one marriage is enough for him. He’s been there done that and it turns out he wasn’t good at taking care of someone else in that way. He was comfortable with the silence as he watched the waves coming in and out. He looked over at her, moving to meet her hand. Giving it a gentle shake. “Levi, pleased to meet you.”

her giddy laughter filled the street again, just briefly, at the joking tone. ‘now you see that observation tells me that your eyes aren’t as jaded as you might think,’ she says with a playful tilt of her head. ‘the clouds are s- wait! oh my goodness, have i not introduced myself?’ she exclaimed, immediately jutting her hand out between the two of them. ‘i’m angelica! and sometimes i get so distracted by clouds and i can’t seem to remember my manners.’

She was a foil to him that was for sure. It was nice to meet someone as joyful as the girl in front of him. “Well, i suppose there is hope for me after all.” he said with a smile that reached his eyes. Amusement evident in his expression as she introduced herself partially flustered looking. “Levi. I sometimes almost trip over girls who get distracted by clouds and I also forget my manners from time to time.”

      the girl nods, ponytail brushing over her shoulders. “alright,” she says, gaze lingering on the male’s features for a moment before flitting back to the night sky. shiloh takes a quick drag of her own cigarette, stamping it out on the bench before slipping it back into its carton. it’s not that she’s trying to hide her little habit, she’s just grown accustomed to keeping it private since her teenage years. her parents were never the most accepting of her choices, always nitpicking some thing or another. it was just easier  to keep certain things to herself. she exhales, eyes following the stream of smoke as it slowly dissipates. “i don’t mean to be nosy or anything, but there are better apps for dating than tinder,” she offers up, hoping the small bit of conversation is enough to ease her discomfort. 

He finished his smoke as she started to stamp out her own. He raised his brow and if he was feeling more cheeky would point out that her smoking wasn’t bothersome. He flicked his butt to the ground, crushing it for good measure. If he had a nickle for every smoke related fire he would be loaded. He was debating getting up and continuing his stroll home when the other spoke. “I am not even sure if Tinder is considered a dating app. It’s more for casual hook-up from the messages i have gotten recently.”

Lauren held her hands up in defense. “Hey, I’m definitely the last person to judge you for that.”, she raised her eyebrows, “I don’t even manage to stay in a relationship for longer than a few months.” She thought about the last guy she had been with. You couldn’t even call it a relationship really, it had never been that serious after all. And why would she even want that?! In the end it wouldn’t work out anyway. “That thing, that you need a relationship to be happy, is overrated anyway”, she shrugged her shoulders, staring somewhere in the distance , “My opinion.”

“Well glad we are a judgment free zone here.” he chuckled a little, breathing a small sigh of relief. He agreed with what she was saying, being in a relationship to be happy was more than overrated and he didn’t need it. He also didn’t need all the drama that came with men and woman both. “I would argue that relationships are overrated in general. But hey I could be saying that then this time next year I am in a committed relationship. Stranger things can happen.”

‘sure is! but i’m a terrible clutz and practically prone to getting injured so it’s nothing new,’ she admits with a careless shrug - a wide grin still adorning her face. ‘you guess? oh dear me, you are clearly not seeing it.. - the beauty i mean. just look, look at all the shapes! the clouds, moving, it makes me sort of dizzy sometimes with wonder.’

he squinted a little harder at the sky for a moment before looking back at her. The damn smile on her face was damn infectious. He found himself grinning along s he scratched his beard a little. “Perhaps my eyes are just a little too jaded at this point.” he joked with her, “But the way they move are pretty breath taking.”

     The DJ shrugged slightly before smirking almost to herself as she remembered how the night went and the perplexed response from the guy on the other side of the application. “ I think he said something about flying, but if you stay true to the Freudian philosophy… every dream has some Oedipus connotation, right? Freud would’ve been proud of me “ she grinned, which quickly turned into a frown as he unravelled part of his background, in response she simply fidgeted, pulling the tiny lose fabric of her sweater. “ Have you ever been to a free therapist? “ she questioned, raising her eyebrow and taking a deep breath, chewing her inner cheek. “ Everyone’s life is a little fucked up, right? Doesn’t mean anything. “ 

he was silent as he listened to an overview of a strangers dream, it was amusing. The girl next to him seemed smart, smarter than he was at the very least. Levi wasn’t really one for studying, he excelled more on the hands on and physical side of life. That being said he did enjoy a good novel now and then, his ex also taught him the importance of poetry in their time together. “I’ve been to a therapist or two, but they weren’t really what I need you know.” he said calmly, keeping his eyes on the waves ahead of them. “Yeah sure everyone has fucked up lives but why wallow in it?” he asked sparing her a glance, trying to gently get her to open him up. “I sure as hell learned that the hard way.”

what's one choice you've made that had you chosen opposite you would be in a very different place right now?

—HONESTY (NO LONGER ACCEPTING)

“Shit. I think this list is way too long to be able to choose just one. I’ve mad a lot of stupid choices both intentionally and unintentionally.”

—Honesty (NOT ACCEPTING)

“heh—Something simple, like grabbing a couple of coffees and going for a walk through the park. Or just going for a dinner somewhere I love and not some fancy restaurant like I am trying to impress them. Just never go to a movie, take them somewhere you enjoy and can easily talk.”

Who or what inspires you to be a better person?

—HONESTY (NOT ACCEPTING)

“Probably my pass self or hell even my ex. I have messed up pretty bad and let not only myself down but her too. You can only wake up literally in a gutter so many times before you realize shit needs to get better.”

     Perhaps it was now or never. To stand up and say the six words she dread to tell everybody, including herself. Although, it wasn’t like she couldn’t control herself if she really wanted to. She had it under control, it was simply bad timing. She nodded at his question, placing her hands on her lap, fidgeting “ There are some weird people on that site and sometimes it’s fun to make fun of people, you know? I told a guy once he had an Oedipus complex based off the dream he described to me and then I had to spend the next twenty minutes explaining to him who was Oedipus and what my joke meant. He didn’t understand a thing “ she shared with the ghost of a smirk that quickly vanished as the man spoke again, making her sigh deeply “ Maybe I like the breeze and the strange looks of local owners who look at me like I’m trying to steal from them “ she began, chewing her inner cheek “ You don’t even know me, are you always this open to hear stranger tell their sob stories? “

He couldn’t help the quirk of his brow as she explained the term to him. Kids were pretty fucking weird these day, which was something his old man probably had thought multiple times. “I’m glad i at least understand what an Oedipus complex is, which makes me intrigued about this guys dream.” he chuckled a little. A smirk played at his lips which didn’t disappear as she went into what she was doing on the bench for so long so late at night. The smirk stayed but morphed into one of understanding, he had been metaphorically on the same bench almost 20 years ago. “I am. because i have been the one who needed someone to listen and trust me sometimes a stranger is easier to tell your troubles to.” he leaned forward resting his arms on his legs. “Consider me a free therapist.”

“Like what..?”, Lauren asked when he talked about leaving something out in his profile but quickly regretted it, “Sorry, sometimes my mouth is faster than my brain…” She stayed silent for a while, staring at the smoke of the cigarette. “You don’t really seem to be convinced about that app, why do you use it anyway?” Maybe she was too curious again but she just couldn’t stand just sitting around and being silent.

His brow raised as she asked about what he left out. He thought about what to say. There was the fact that he lived through one of the worst events in history and it had left him pretty messed up. That it destroyed his marriage and didn’t help his already pretty big drinking habit. He didn’t want to share all of that with a stranger though so he just left it as. “I once was a married man and now i’m back in my home town happily” Partially unhappily “Not married.” he chuckled a little at his statement. “I got the app to appease my nosy friends and madre. Who seem to think I need a good woman in my life. I’m not entirely sure why I still use it.”

‘ hmm, ‘ she hummed, looking away from the man for the first time and back out in front of herself, letting herself think for a minute , ‘ if i were you, i’d fake a relationship. come up with a partner that lives in costa rica or something , ‘ winnie joked, ‘ but really , i’m sorry that it’s not going all that well. me, i prefer to meet people the old-fashioned way. in a bar after three drinks, ‘ she joked again, ‘ but, i mean, you never know. maybe you will meet someone special and you’ll both swipe right and you’ll fall madly in love forever. ‘ 

   “I think my mother would like the idea of me finding a woman in Costa Rica too much—hell. I am sure she would offer to pay to fly her here.” he said with a boisterous laugh. He could just picture his mothers excitement at the prospect. He leaned back on the bench following her example and looking out at the ocean. “I don’t and honestly can’t really do the drinking thing anymore.” he said honestly. “As for the madly in love forever, I’ve been there done that. Not sure if I want to again. It’s a little over rated if you ask me.”
