katie held out a coffee, wordlessly. it took her a moment to speak, as she was drinking down large gulps of her own coffee- like a starved woman. “walked past before to drop off some flowers.” she finally said. “i was getting a coffee for myself.” katie used as explanation. katie almost wanted to tell him the truth- in that she’d actually thought he was a homeless person, and had felt bad that he might be cold, and that the hot drink might help. “sounds like you need a… what’re those things called again?” she clicked her fingers together, before nodding along. “right. a day off.”
for anyone who didn’t know he owned the business he was nearly asleep in front of, it must look bad. a bearded man, dozing off on the side of the road. classy, lex. he observes the scene, noticing that she’s holding two coffees, but doesn’t connect why. “you must really love coffee if you need two.” he points out, a soft grin on his face. “a day off? i’ve never heard of those. especially not with the kid thing. i’ve check and unfortunately, parents don’t get days off. it’s like that commercial -- parents can’t take sick days.” he sits up straighter, trying to wake himself up more. “i’ll be alright. maybe i need to take an idea from you and go get myself a coffee. or two.”
