5,250 gallons of oil spill into South Platte River
September 19, 2013
Industry crews have placed absorbent booms in the South Platte River south of Milliken where at least 5,250 gallons of crude oil has spilled from two tank batteries into the flood-swollen river.
The spill from a damaged tank was reported to the Colorado Department of Natural Resources Wednesday afternoon by Anadarko Petroleum, as is required by state law.
State officials have responded to the spill site, which is south of Milliken near where the St. Vrain River flows into the South Platte.
Nearly 1,900 oil and gas wells in flooded areas of Colorado are shut, and 600 industry personnel are inspecting and repairing sites, according to the Colorado Oil and Gas Association. Crews are inspecting operations, conducting aerial and ground surveillance, identifying and determining locations of possible impairments, the association said Tuesday.
Anadarko, the second-largest operator in the operator in the Denver-Julesburg Basin, has shut about 10 percent of its operations — 250 tank batteries and 670 wells.
In a statement, Anadarko said: “To date, we are aware of two tank batteries that were damaged by flood waters, and have associated light-oil releases. The releases occurred in flood waters associated with the South Platte River and the St. Vrain River, and we have reported them to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, the National Response Center, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
"We are actively working under the oversight of these agencies to contain and clean up the releases to the greatest extent possible. We will continue to provide additional information as appropriate."
State inspectors also have fanned along the river to assess environmental damage from toppled oil and gas facilities after the floods.
The flood that began late last week toppled dozens of oil and gas storage tanks and swamped other production facilities at sites in the flood plain. Earlier this week, oil drums, some empty, some full, could be seen floating in the river as far east as Kersey.
"This is the first specific incident where we have a clear indication of the problem," state natural resources spokesman Todd Hartman said.

such a needed campaign. i wish they’d have included native americans as well, though, as cultural appropriation of them in costumes is just as awfully common.
It’s that time of year again when these go around. And I will keep reblogging them. And if I see the joke ones I am likely to rip them apart with prejudice.
I will reblog this every year and unfollow anyone who posts joke fandom spinoffs of this very serious and important commentary.
Here’s the schedule for this comet.
August and September 2013. The comet should become visible in August and September 2013 to observers at dark locations using small telescopes or possibly even binoculars.
October 2013. Comet ISON should become visible to the unaided eye, but only barely in the early part of the month. The comet will be sweeping in front of the constellation Leo then. It’ll pass first near Leo’s brightest star Regulus, then near the planet Mars. Maybe these brighter objects will help you find it that month. Meanwhile, the comet itself will be getting brighter during October.
November 2013. Comet ISON will continue to brighten throughout the month as it nears its late November perihelion (closest point to our sun). Plus ISON will pass very close to the bright star Spica and the planet Saturn, both in the constellation Virgo. Its perihelion (closest point to our sun) on November 28 will be an exciting time. The comet will come within 800,000 miles (1.2 million km) of our sun’s surface. If all goes well, and the comet doesn’t break up (as comets sometimes do), the terrific heating Comet ISON will undergo when it’s closest to our parent star might turn the comet into a brilliant object. Some are predicting that ISON will become as bright as a full moon! That would make Comet ISON a daylight object, briefly. Remember, though, at perihelion, Comet ISON will appear close to the sun on the sky’s dome (only 4.4° north of the sun on November 28). Although the comet will be bright, you’ll need to look carefully to see it in the sun’s glare. Some expert help around this time might be called for, and we’ll announce comet-viewing parties as we hear about them.
December 2013. This may be the best month to see Comet ISON, assuming it has survived its close pass near the sun intact. The comet will be visible both in the evening sky after sunset and in the morning sky before sunrise. As ISON’s distance from the sun increases, it’ll grow dimmer. But, for a time, it should be as bright as our sky’s brightest planet, Venus, and it should have a long comet tail. People all over Earth will be able to see it, but it’ll be best seen from the Northern Hemisphere as 2013 draws to a close.
January 2014. Will ISON still be visible to the eye? Hopefully. And on January 8, 2014, the comet will lie only 2° from Polaris — the North Star.
The Phantom Orchid, Cephalanthera austiniae is endemic to northwestern North America. This plant has no chlorophyll and is entirely white. Incapable of photosynthesis, it is entirely dependent on mycorrhizal fungi for its nutrition. Since the fungi receive no benefit from this relationship, this is not a mutualism but rather a case of a plant parasitizing fungi. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D
In 1996, scientists took a huge risk when they pointed the Hubble telescope to an inky field that they believed to be void of stars and planets. As images from Hubble are in constant demand, the worry was that devoting so much time to a black space would prove futile. Once the photons finally registered, though, that leap of faith proved fruitful: light from over three thousand galaxies illuminated the image. A few years and missions later, Hubble’s glimpse into what is known as the deep field has revealed that we are just one tiny part of a vast system comprising 100 billion galaxies.
There are moments and experiences that you remember forever. They are signposts that paint a new road ahead of us, and tweak our rear-view mirror so that we may never see the past the same way again. Our lives are full of them: First loves, births, deaths, that one best meal.
Experiencing the Hubble Ultra Deep Field is one of those moments. Take a sec and truly internalize what you’re seeing. When you stare into an empty piece of the universe and find it overflowing with galaxies just like our own, and not like our own at all, stretching to the beginning of time itself … if you are alive in the least bit, you are forever changed.
We are time travelers all.
And the Winner is (for the AXE Apollo space race contest by AXE- Malaysia) ROSE! Thanks for all the votes, as much as I DESPISE AXE and their method of advertising, I am happy that Malaysia will be sending their first woman into space and that she is very motivated, intelligent and qualified for the job.
It’s so ironic to see the models left and right, hired and styled in anticipation of a male astronaut candidate, for a winner shot, that was planned to suggest AXE would turn you into a magic women magnet… and seeing Rose make it all implode. This is not only the uplifting success story of a nerd girl. This is also the successful subversion of an otherwise incredibly misogynistic advertising giant.

Frozen Bubbles, Potential Danger?
Above are fantastic photos of the bubbles of Abraham Lake, an artificial lake created in 1972, sitting in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies on North Saskatchewan River in Canada. This rare phenomenon where bubbles get frozen underneath its surface, occurs in the winter and has made the lake famous for both photographers and scientists. The phenomenon itself is caused by the decay of organic material and anaerobic respiration of the organisms on the lake bed. The bubbles are made by methane gas which has frozen coming close to the much colder lake surface. A significant worry is that methane is a key contributor to climate change and as the temperature increases more methane will be released creating a positive feedback towards climate change.

LIQUID SCULPTURES with FERROFLUID SPIKED WITH MAGNETIC NANOPARTICLES
(Image: Linden Gledhill/Cognisys - on Flickr)
Ferrofluids are colloidal mixtures - magnetic nanoparticles suspended evenly throughout a carrier liquid.
When placed in a magnetic field, the suspended particles cause the entire fluid to become strongly magnetized. In these images a small drop of ferrofluid is placed within a magnetic field created by a neodymium iron-boron rare-earth magnet.
The peaks and troughs result as the magnet tries to pull the liquid along its field lines.
