Today I had a strange moment of realization.

I sit there, editing screenshots, feeling almost at peace. Then my husband, who reads the news, says: "Odesa is being bombed." I mean, just another day of war with barbaric Russia, nothing new. Three-month-old baby died, 8 people died. The russians bombed an apartment building.

Then after a few more minutes he says: "explosions were also heard in Poltava region." - Oh, it's close to us - Yeah

Nothing. Not a single emotion. Just a normal saturday.

But if I stop and really think about this for a second - what the fuck? Imagine you live in a peaceful country. Not the wealthiest country in the world, but it's yours, it's one of a kind. Millions of people are just living their mundane lives, going about their daily routine. Farmers plow fields, bakers bake bread, children go to school where they are taught by teachers...People get married, get divorced, have children and adopt dogs. Millions of people with their dreams, goals and worries.

And then one other country goes like "lol, we're gonna bomb you now. Buildings go boom. We're gonna kill as many of you as we can and we will blame you for it. We will call your entire nation, culture and language faked, inferior and worthy of elimination, but you will be called Nazis. We will deport you from your own home that is now destroyed by us. We will send you and your children to filtration camps. We will kidnap, torture and kill your husbands and fathers. We will rape you and force your children to watch. We will turn your cities into ruins. Because we can."

Because it's still possible in the 21st century. How is it possible? What the fuck?

The russian occupiers in Mariupol announced the start of registration for compensation for destroyed housing and / or loss of a family member. For housing - 500 thousand rubles (approximately 6 thousand US dollars), for the deceased family member - 3 million rubles (approximately 33 thousand US dollars).

There's only one tiny "nuance": when submitting a written statement, Mariupol residents must state that the property was "destroyed by the Ukrainian military" and that relatives were "killed by the Ukrainian army." In the absence / refusal of such a mark, the occupiers say that no compensation will be provided.

However, they wouldn't be able to provide such compensation anyway, as it would cost russia at least 2.5 billion of US dollars. Russia can hardly afford it in its current state. All this is done by the invaders in order to obtain thousands of written "evidence" from the inhabitants of Mariupol about the "crimes of the Ukrainian army."

They came to a foreign land, destroyed everything, killed tens of thousands of residents and deported even more, created filtration camps for the survivors...

Wondered how much Ukranian lives were worth to Germany? Less than 165 billion euros. That's less than 2% of their GDP. More than two times less than the economy contracted because of Covid (which, let me remind you, didn't result in mass economic catastrophe). But still too high a price for a gas embargo.

And that's according to their worst estimate. Which "are based on political gut instincts and doomsday warnings of industrial lobbyists rather than concrete economic models".

Between that and the knowledge that French weapon sold after 2014 are used to slaughter civilians, it's really clear that the only side they're on is the one of money.

How can they claim any kind of values if they don't do better, right now?

Romanian media report that approximately 100 activists of Romani origin assembled on Monday, 16 May in front of the Russian Embassy in Bucharest on the occasion of Roma Resistance Day for an action convened by the Aresel platform, which fights for the Roma community's rights. The capture of a tank by Romani people in Ukraine from the Russian occupiers became the demonstration's symbol.

Aresel, a civic platform, announced that the demonstration was a celebration and commemoration not just of the historical resistance by Romani people, but also of the current resistance they are showing in the context of Russia's war on Ukraine. According to them, from the beginning of the invasion ordered by Putin, the Roma have been fighting side-by-side with their fellow citizens for the freedom of Ukraine.

"It was written about the Roma in Ukraine that they 'stole' the Russian tank, not that they had captured it, as would have been said about any other citizens of Ukraine, the deed would have been presented as one of heroism if it had been done by anybody else," Aresel announced. "Resistance by Roma, for us, is not anything exceptional, it does not happen just during criticial moments, but is a way of life. Non-Romani racism toward us is a cultural phenomenon that pressures us to live in precarious situations. The racism that Roma encounter every day has become something common for many Roma, something that is no longer a surprise."

Germany, France and Italy are making overtures to Moscow.

After weeks spent fretting over what would happen if Russia crushed Ukraine, Western European leaders are now worried about what might happen if Ukraine actually wins.

One big concern is that a Ukrainian win could destabilize Russia, making it even more unpredictable and putting a normalization of energy links further out of reach. That’s why some western European capitals quietly favor a “face-saving” resolution to the conflict, even if it costs Ukraine some territory.

How Germany helped blaze Putin’s path into Ukraine

Berlin gave the Russian president the benefit of the doubt until it was too late.

But make no mistake: No country has done more to downplay and forgive Russia’s transgressions than Germany. In popular mythology, that loyalty (like much else in modern Germany) is tangled up in its war guilt. If that were really the reason though, Germany would owe an even greater debt to Ukraine and Belarus, countries that lost even more of their people in the war at the hands of the Germans but who barely even feature in the country’s collective remembrance culture.

For Putin, the big lesson from Georgia was that Russia’s military was not as capable as he thought, so he set about modernizing it with — you guessed it — Germany’s help. One particularly controversial project involved the sale of combat simulation systems for €100 million. Under pressure from allies, the German government eventually canceled the deal — after 95 percent of the gear had been delivered.
