Not palaeontology, but a shameless promotion for a project I’m working on right now! Myself and a group of passionate tabletop gamers are setting up a livestream for the roleplaying game Vampire the Masquerade (5th edition) - demonstrating how the game is played, and telling a fantastic story set in London as we go! We’ve all been working our butts off to get this project off the ground, so any follows, reblogs or other support is so very appreciated!

My sketches and designs for week 3 of the creature anatomy course I’m in. Week 3 focused on bird and dinosaur anatomy.  I decided to combine owl anatomy and the anatomy of abelisaurs for my creature.  Below you can see a few of the studies I did of owls and various abelisaurs along with final design.

It's so good to find someone dedicated to realistic extinct animals, not showing them as big monsters.

Thank you so much! At the end of the day, these animals were real, they existed, so I find them most exciting when we can get closer to what they truly looked like rather than outdated movie centre-pieces!

Weird Backs Month #03 – Ianthasaurus

The synapsids diversified rapidly following their first appearance in the geologic record, and two particular families developed large showy sailbacks completely independently of each other: the edaphosaurs and the sphenacodonts.

Ianthasaurus here was a basal edaphosaur, known from the the Late Carboniferous of Kansas, USA (~302 mya). It was smaller than many of its more famous relatives, only about 75cm long (2′5″), and seems to have been an insect-hunting predator.

Its sail featured “cross bars” sticking out from the main spines on the front two-thirds or so of its body. The purpose of these extra ornaments is unclear – but they must have been useful for something because later edaphosaurs sported them much more extensively.

A study of Saurian morphology: Pterosauria (part 3)

In which our old friend Dsungaripterus returns with two friends for Pterosaur Ptuesday! Sadly, I’m done with pterosaurs and will have to move on to Pseudosuchia—which I have very minimum knowledge of. If someone here can help me with dem crocs I’d be grateful.

I will also take a day or two of break from this project since I need to catch up on another (plus my wrist kinda hurts). So expect the first batch of Pseudosuchians in 4-5 days.

P.S.: Mark Witton retweeted my first set and I’m still asdjlaksds-ing about it.
