CONTACT SHEET FOR FINAL SHOOT
FINAL PIECE REVIEW
I’m pleased with the way my four final pieces came out and I followed my plan and made sure each step was executed perfectly. However, I did stumble into some problems, for example I had accidentally made one of my strips too small as well as carving incorrectly. Fortunately, I was able to fix my issue during the break and now everything fits my standard.
FIRST DAY
I did my shoot in the first hour and began to edit the images
Used the rectangular marquee tool to single out strips from the compact mirror and manipulate them
I turned a few of the strips into black and white as well as boosting up the contrast and brightness
I overall made sure the images were bright and added saturation and curves to really make my work attract the audience like a materialistic product is advertised into something ‘flashy’ to attract more people to fall into the trap of consumerism.
After the four hours ended I went and printed my works out along with the original images that I had only edited by making it more bright and vibrant.
SECOND DAY
Used the trimmer and cut my original pieces into strips
I realised I had made an error with one of my pieces then continued working with my other pieces, planning to fix it in break
I cut my images into strips but made sure they were big enough to cover the black and white strips as I wanted to hide them
I used the technique of using a stanley knife to carve three slots into my edits so I could weave in the strips and place them over the black and white - so that when people pulled at the strip, it would reveal the black and white strip underneath with the song lyrics about Materialism.
By the end of the first break I had fixed my issue and finally completed my four pieces.
OVERALL EVALUATION OF MY FINAL PIECE
I’m satisfied and enjoy my final outcome as it directly relates back to my project and I feel that every aspect of what I contributed to my final piece such as creating patterns out of materialistic goods then projecting them on a mirror, representing how materialism and consumerism is pushed into our brains to the point where it becomes us. I feel that the lyrics I used also make a strong statement about how materialism effects us and by having a manipulated compact mirror and the lyrics hiding behind, it suggests how materialism has become one with us and we only realise the effects (the lyrics in this case) once we really open our eyes (pull the strips away)
TITLE OF FINAL PIECE : EVERYONE IS A GOLD DIGGER.
PHOTOGRAPHS OF MY FINAL PIECE
FINAL PIECE - WORK IN PROGRESS - TUESDAY 05/05/15
So far I have created four pieces of work and I’ve done all my manipulations using the rectangular marquee tool as well as singling out certain strips then turning them into black and white. I then added my song lyrics onto the black and white strips.
Despite having to do my shoot in the beginning hour of the exam due to lack of equipment, I still managed to finish my digital work (photoshop) in enough time due to my organisation and well time keeping. I made sure I spent at least 40 minutes on each piece, and using the spare time I had to fix any issues and refine my work.
For tomorrow I plan on:
Having the works printed along with the original pictures
Using the trimmer to cut my original pictures into strips that fit over the black and white strips with the lyrics.
Using a Stanley knife to carve three lines near the strips so I can weave them in and cover the song lyrics so it looks like it’s part of the image
FINAL SHOOT REVIEW
This was one of my most successful projection shoots as I was now aware of what skills I should be using and focusing on as they were the most effective in helping my shoot be better. Though there were some issues I had encountered such as trying to get the mirror in the right position where it could get the most colour onto it though that was easily solved by me using extra equipment such as spare books being piled on top of each other on a table.
What went well
The macro settings helped me get a better zoom and capture the mirror against the projection screen.
With the help of macro I managed to get the camera focus on the compact mirror while the projected screen was somewhat blurry in the background. I like this effect and found it interesting as the background became a blend of different colours and the mirror was entirely focused
I used IOS 1600 which was indeed very helpful as it made the camera a lot less sensitive to the light and allowed me to continue to work without the automatic flash lighting up and taking the colour away from my work.
What didn’t go well
There was some pictures that came out quite blurry due to camera shake however if I had used a tripod it may help stop the blurriness from appearing but I wouldn’t be able to get a good zoom.
Due to the positioning of the compact mirror as well as the projector I had to take pictures from a side angle which was easy to crop however it would of been much better if all my images were taken from the front.
LYRICS I PLAN TO BE USING
“We are living in a material world and I am a material girl” - Material Girl by Madonna
“I ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger, but she ain’t messin’ with no broke—” - Gold-digger by Kanye West
“It’s not about the money, money, money” - Price Tag by Jessie J
“Consumerism running through them like a tumor in them” - Consumerism by Lauryn Hill
THE FOUR PATTERNS I’LL BE WORKING WITH
I wanted to keep them bright and colourful as the brighter colours show up on the projector plus the colours will catch on the mirror and just make my work come out a lot better than if it had dull colours.
I didn’t need many patterns as I can create so many eye catching works with only a small amount of patterns.
FINAL OUTCOME PLAN/SHOOT INTENTION
For my final outcome, I want to link together all the photoshop techniques I’ve developed over this project and refine it into four A4 pieces. Each piece will be a compact mirror that will be projected with my patterns that I’ve made with makeup. I will then manipulate them using the rectangular marquee tool and add black and white to the strips which I will print out and use my weaving technique to cover the black and white which people can remove to reveal song lyrics about Materialism.
I plan on using a projector in a dark room so the patterns being projected will stand out more clearly and appear brighter then place my compact mirror in front of the projector so the projections can appear onto the compact mirror. Then using the macro setting’s on the digital camera I plan on zooming in and taking pictures of the mirror and the projections. I also plan on using ISO 1600 so that it can take pictures in the dark while stopping the automatic flash.
EXPERIMENTATION
For these two pieces I used the rectangular marquee tool and manipulated the layers then added the black and white filters and boosted up the contrast and brightness. I then went on to add lyrics from Madonna’s Material girl.
I found this to be a good technique however I don’t really like how messy it looks and I want to focus on making it look much better and more crisp to make it final piece material.

EXPERIMENTATION USING WEAVING
EXPERIMENTATION
I mainly focused on the composition for this shoot and mainly experimented with different angles and lighting rather than digital editing. I really like these experimentation because it looks much cleaner and professional than my other shoots. I followed in Margareth’s footsteps by focusing on how the composition was set up and I want to use this technique in the future. I also really like how I experimented with different vantage points for example an overhead view because of how aesthetically pleasing it looks and I want to incorporate this into my future work in my project.
SHOOT REVIEW
What I liked
The use of composition was really thought out and nice
and I used different vantage points which I thought was interesting because now I was photographing the same things but with different angles so I was showing a different elements
What I didn’t like
There were some spots in the white backround which I didn’t like

SHOOT INTENTION
To take still life images of materialistic objects, e.g makeup against a studio white background.
The composition is important as I want to have the products in different styles such as laying them on their side or placing them standing upright.
I want to experiment with different camera angles as well so I’ll be using different vantage points such as taking pictures from the side or from above.
Artificial lighting such as flash or an extra light should be used.
MARGARETH PERFONCIO
Margareth Perfoncio is a photographer based in San Paulo who focuses on capturing images of flowers and fruits in still life photography. What I find compelling is her use of colours that compliment each other in the images instead of harsh, contrasting colours. I find this interesting because it keeps the photographs sensitive and I want to weave this into my work because I don’t want to use vibrancy or bright colours which I usually rely on in my work.
ALLISON DIAZ
Allison Diaz is a photographer who focuses on cutting and merging different images together in her series called ‘Haunted Mirrors’. Her work is interesting because she keeps the colours monochromatic, highlighting the oneness of the two images coming together. I want to incorporate this into my work as I want to show how materialism has become a part of society and a necessary part of people’s lives.
The composition of the photographs is important. Allison has especially put certain strips of pictures next to each other to add to the bizarre effect and makes people think as to why she had placed things like that. I want to include this into my work as I want people to think when they see my work and wonder why I composed it like that.
EXPERIMENTATION
I realised I liked projected fabrics rather than projecting on people so I projected onto a white cloth. I really like the outcome as all the colours blended together and I wanted to keep my editing rather sensitive rather than just using modes such as difference or exclusion. I simply used the auto tone and added a slight amount of exposure. I’m really satisfied with this work because it makes my work less literal and hopefully allow people to think of the message I’m giving out with my projections.
In the last image I simply layered two edited images over one another and played with the opacity. However I don’t really like the effect it created so I will not be continuing it in the future.
