Australian LGBT+ Community Survey

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all looking after yourselves during this [insert rant here] campaign. On a more positive note, I’m part of the Amnesty International Australia marriage equality campaign team and I’d love to ask those LGBTQI+ Australians who are feeling able and willing to be politically active in this time, to get involved with us.

I’ve written a letter to trans & gnc Australians (informally) here, with some resources and contact details, but we would also love to get more people of colour involved, and of course anyone else who is interested. We have seen some of the areas in which some other Yes campaign bodies are failing and we want to improve on this, but the best way to do that is to mobilise the most marginalised voices. I’d invite anyone who’s interested (or who knows others who might be) to check out the letter, share the post (or even just the contact details), or ask me any questions or hesitations you might have.

Amnesty has LGBT+ staff, ally-trained staff, and staff from a range of cultural and religious backgrounds, and all Amnesty offices across the country are serving as safe spaces during this campaign. Whether you want to get involved or just have a cuppa and take some time out, our doors are open to you. We also have professional counselling services and mental health resources available to all our activists.

We have groups across the country in capital cities, universities, suburbs, and even some rural areas, so if you want to get involved (or find a safe space), there’s a place for you. I hope to hear from you soon! Stay safe, stay strong, stay proud everyone.

Hi guys gals & nonbinary pals 

PFLAG is asking for LGBT+ Australian opinions regarding the proposed *postal* plebiscite currently under consideration on marriage equality. (eg. do members of The Community support the postal plebiscite, oppose it, want to boycott or make a statement with it etc.) The survey is for LGBT+ Australian voices only but it would be handy to get as many of those as we can I think!

that link to the survey you posted uses 'monosexual' and says that gay/lesbian people are accepted lmao

that’s, not what it says. “increased recognition” means exactly that, which is true, i would say there is greater recognition of all lgbt people, in australia, than there was say, 20, 30, 50, 100 years ago. I also think it’s true that bi people, overall, get less recognition, and certainly nonbinary people do, as do all trans people. increased doesn't mean total, and recognition doesn't mean acceptance.

Bi people, particularly bi women, face higher rates of intimate partner violence, as one example, than lesbians or gay men. I disagree that you can chalk that mostly up to lack of recognition, but that’s a part of the big picture.

We use “non-monosexual” and “non-binary” as umbrella terms to focus on common “ways of being” instead of specific identities / labels

i understand that monosexual doesnt work as a class identity, but i think Misty was trying to be as inclusive as they could in their language, rather than saying gay & lesbian people have structural power over mga people, or trying to class us with straight people. Given that i have met them on multiple occasions, i can confidently say they dont think im oppressing them by being a lesbian.

This kind of research can and does effect services for lgbt people. I’m fine with a problematic term being used when the pay off is the potential for improved resources for mga and nonbinary people, and by extension all lgbt people.

you can be incredibly proud of your sexuality and still not come out for personal or safety reasons. The choice is a personal one and no one has the right to pressure or ‘out’ you!

Can you recommend any Australian shows with lgbtq representation, maybe some books too?

Yassss 👏🙏🏻 So books I’m gonna be awful at but our other friendly mods whom are bookworms can definitely add their bit to this!So TV, easy; Wentworth is amazingly queer, such a good show like orange is the new black but like crazier and Australian obviously haha. But my ultimate favourite is Please Like Me featuring the amazing Josh Thomas whom is real life gay and also the writer and director of the show he is just too good. I finished what’s out in about a day and the final season will come out I think this year :( very sad but very good show and it also has Caitlin Stacy in it if you didn’t need more of a reason to watch it 😍. If I think of any others I’ll add em on! Otherwise shoot us another message :)) But but an amazing LGBT+ show that isn’t Australian but I highly recommend for all of the community is sense8 and if anyone’s interested in my reasons why you should watch it message us again but like trust me on this one hahaha :)- mod Sarah xx
