“what happened to this being ‘good practice?’” kangmin good-naturedly throws back the other’s words at him before shaking his head. in all honestly, he couldn’t say that he disagreed with haneul in the slightest. but the quickest way to get home was to endure all this nonsense, was it not?

“it still could be worse, y’know? we haven’t been splashed with anything or had someone throw stuff at us yet. but, let’s just try and get through these… ah, be careful where you walk! if we’re gentle, we might just get out of here without anymore popping..”

“at least confetti doesn’t make any loud noise,” haneul replies, his bottom lip jutting out. he’s too old to be sulking over balloons popping, and if his siblings could see him right now, they would have a field day. it comforts him a little knowing they will never get to find out about any of this, unless the staff set up cameras in the bathroom, which he doubts they did—or hopes they didn’t, anyway.

oh, god. the company better not be recording this.

he cautiously looks around the room for any hidden cameras, but doesn’t spot any. it doesn’t completely take away the suspicion someone is watching them, but perhaps that was just a feeling that came with being an idol trainee. hopefully the balloons will be the end of the surprises the staff have in store for them because haneul isn’t sure if his heart could take any more of their jump scares.

“you’re right,” he sighs. they are lucky the staff has been considerate enough not to prank them with anything that could stain their clothes or be stuck in their hair for longer than a day. confetti and balloons were nothing compared to the pranks he had seen in youtube videos before. he comes out from behind kangmin with the intention of cleaning himself up, but stops when the other tells him to be careful.

“oh,” he says, looking around at the balloons covering the bathroom. “do you really think that’s how it works?” haneul tiptoes to the sink and to his surprise none of the balloons pop. it could be a coincidence, but he thinks that kangmin might just be a genius. “wow, you’re so smart! maybe we’ll make it out of this alive after all.”

haneul doesn’t consider himself easily startled, so when confetti rains down on him and the other trainees waiting to pick up their ids, he doesn’t even bat an eye. ah, he thinks to himself, must be a belated april fools joke. the corners of his mouth curl up into an amused smile, but not once does he consider this isn’t the end to the prank set up by company staff. one of his seniors tells him it kind of feels like an end of the year stage he’s seen on television so many times before and haneul doesn’t know if he agrees with that—there’s no stage, no crowd, no music, no festive outfits! but apart from all of that, if he squints, the other trainee is right; haneul feels more like he at one of his siblings’ birthday party.

the drummer is combing his fingers through his hair when the staff tells them to head to the restroom to fix themselves before retrieving their ids. he doesn’t understand why it matters he has pieces of confetti in his hair or stuck to his clothes, but decides against questioning the request. the sooner he gets it done, the sooner he can get out of here and grab a bite to eat—or better yet, maybe he’ll cook for himself! his parents sent over a couple of recipes he’s been dying to try, but hasn’t had the time to due to his schedule as both a student and a trainee. most days he lived on instant noodles and takeout and coffee—lots of coffee. haneul doesn’t think he could make it through any of this without it.

he’s so lost in thought that it takes him a second to realize the restroom is filled with balloons, and while he cautiously approaches the mirrors, he prays that none of them will pop without a warning. okay, so maybe he is easily startled—by loud noises, that is. haneul tries to make quick work of removing the confetti from his hair and off his clothing, but he isn’t fast enough because he hears a loud pop! behind him and lets out a surprised yelp. his hands start working faster, but he jumps when another balloon pops, followed by two more while he removes the last piece of paper from his locks. “i hate it here,” he whines to no one in particular when he exits the restroom. “i want to go home.”

honestly, having haneul around had definitely helped the whole anxiety aspect of the situation. there are only a few people that can handle daeun and her – somewhat – interesting questions, as well as only a few that actually make her feel comfortable enough to forget about any extra worries that might be habitating her brain. her smile grows wider upon the male’s reaction to the question. no judgment, no extra questions asked, just a quick and almost witty response to her silly question. daeun nods with a chuckle, her eyes quickly scanning the rest of the group to make sure there was no one wasting their time hearing the conversation. though, she’s sure it’s a way of entertainment for – not only haneul and her – but also the rest of the trainees. “right? i told him it was a rather disgusting mix, like there are some things that sound kinda good? but this one definitely screams hell!”, the trainee whispers with a soft smile and a shake of her head.

“other weird combos? oh god, i have a long list! i don’t think you’d want to hear it…”, daeun adds, her expression turning pensative as she goes through the many ideas her father had come up with. to be fair, it’s no wonder people say her personality is exactly like her father’s – both have a thing for thinking out of the box. “superpowers? i mean… hear me out, how about you try it out? and then you can tell me if it gave you superpowers? i’m sure my dad would love two lab rats” the girl offers a shrug of her shoulders and an innocent smile upon her own suggestion. again, she’s only partially joking.

daeun reminds him of his sisters. the questions she asks are a little out of the ordinary, but not any stranger than the ones he’s been asked by his own siblings. haneul is unfazed by anything they throw at him at this point. once, while they were driving to the store, hana asked him if they were inside the car’s stomach. to this day, it is the strangest question—and maybe slightly terrifying—he’s been asked. and with hajoon offering him one of the monstrosities he calls a sandwich whenever he visits his family, he knows exactly how daeun feels when she tells him about the strange food combinations her dad tries to make her eat. 

“try me,” he laughs. “my brother once made me a sandwich with nutella, cheese and pickles, so i know a thing or two about weird combos.” and like a good brother, he took a big bite, pretended to enjoy it and threw out the rest while hajoon wasn’t looking. “me?” haneul asks, thinking about it for a second. “alright, why not? maybe your dad’s right and it’s really good. and if it does give me powers, i could become a superhero if this whole idol thing doesn’t work out for me. i mean, it’s not like your dad would purposely poison me.” he feigns a look of concern. “he wouldn’t, would he?”

ugly dance

when it came to prior experiences with the company seniors, unfortunately kangmin had already realised by now that there was no telling when someone was really to take him by surprise and whenever something was a legitimate event he should be caring about. april’s fool was, however, always a day to be suspicious, but unfortunately he had forgotten all about the passing of months in the midst of repetitive training and preparing for his last year in university. needless to say, even if he had imagined something being on, this year the prank was masqueraded so much like an actual event that it was only when drowned in confetti that kangmin first began thinking something was off. after all, how did one get that much glittery pieces stuck in a ceiling fan?

of course he had already been taken utterly by surprise when it fell down, even going so far as to let out a loud embarrassing yelp and cling to his nearest trainee colleague who had been filling out the forms alongside him. a junior in training, but much closer to himself in age than some of the other people in the company which often gave him a sense of reassurance. of course he admired those who had moved against their youthfulness and the limitations it might implore on them and actually pursued their dreams from a young age, but kangmin couldn’t help but admit that there was often a gap in mental age between himself and the much younger trainees, even more so a sense of jealousy.

dowsed in confetti they were urged to go change to be more presentable for the photo session, and although kangmin was definitely expecting a follow up, he had no way of knowing when or how it would come. suspicious glances were shot around the hallways they made their ways through lest someone should jump out from behind a corner and cover them in whipped cream or something like that. it seemed haneul noticed his jumpiness, and kangmin felt a bit sheepish at that. instead he attempted to strike up a conversation.

“ah, that really surprised me,” he said with a weak laughter and furrowed brows. “i swear i could feel my heart jump out of my chest. who’d have imagined for that much confetti to be up there… i swear it must have been like how it feels to be on some kind of end of year stage where they force you to shower in the stuff…”

after having his pictures taken, haneul is escorted into a room where the rest of the trainees assigned to his group are waiting to pick up their id. a big yawn escapes from his mouth while he stretches out, slightly exhausted from the long hours he makes as a student and trainee, and he quietly joins the others. it shouldn’t take much longer before they’re done, he thinks, and his mind starts to wander to what he should eat after he gets out of here. he hasn’t cooked for himself in a while, maybe he could try one of the recipes his parents sent over a couple of weeks ago; hopefully his dorm mates won’t be too upset if he ends up burning anything, but those are worries for later. he smiles to himself.

he doesn’t expect his thoughts to be disturbed by confetti raining from the sky, much less by one of his senior trainees clinging to him, and he can’t help but giggle at the other. cute. it takes more than a few pieces of paper falling from the ceiling to get him—and it helps he was too lost in thought to jump at the surprise like kangmin did, but that is something he doesn’t want to admit, even to himself. the staff ushers them towards the bathrooms so they can clean themselves up before they retrieve their ids. haneul doesn’t understand why it matters if there’s confetti in his hair or on his clothes for him to pick it up, but doesn’t get the chance to question it. maybe they’re just being considerate, he thinks to himself. yeah, that must be it; the legacy staff is pretty cool.

“it’s good practice for the future though, isn’t it?” he asks when kangmin speaks to him, ever the optimist. haneul plucks a piece of confetti from the other trainee’s hair and chuckles. “let’s get cleaned up quickly. don’t want to keep everyone else waiting for too long!” he pushes the bathroom door open, allowing his senior to go in first before following after him, and only then does he notice the room is filled with balloons. “what the—” but much further than that he doesn’t get because one of the balloons pops and this time it’s haneul’s turn to yelp in surprise while finding cover behind kangmin. it isn’t much use when he’s surrounded by them, but he isn’t thinking about that right now. “i hate this,” he whines loudly, “i want to go home.”

there’s not a hint of surprise once she’s told they need to take new id photos. daeun supposes it is something normal, that is probably done every so often and that, eventually, she’d have to get used to it. she’s dressed in jeans and a white t-shirt, as required. there is no denying that the trainee was a tiny bit nervous to know how to was going to work, if there would be anyone to keep her company – her palms were sweaty and, needless to say, there might’ve been a nightmare or two with the worst scenarios possible. shin daeun knows nothing could go wrong but being in the presence of cameras does – sometimes – bring out a slightly different side of her.

thankfully, she locks eyes with haneul a few minutes after getting in line, her form filled with every small detail and her hands not as trembly as before. now all they needed to do was wait and, before she can process what she’s doing, daeun is already going through the drawers of her brain – on a silly mission to find a good topic to keep them entertained. “hey, haneul?” she calls out to her friend, her voice is almost a whisper. it’s almost as if she’s about the ask a top secret question, as the girl scoots closer to the male and everything. “serious question, have you ever tried mixing coffee with orange juice?” count on shin daeun to ask the most unaskable questions on earth. she’s sure there’s someone looking already. daeun can feel it. “my dad is onto his weird combos again and wants me to try that, should i run away and never come back or do you think it’d be safe to try?” – the girl is only partially joking.

when they’re told new id photos will be taken, haneul is excited. there is nothing wrong with his current one in particular, other than the picture being slightly outdated, but it’s a welcome break in his daily routine of attending classes and heading straight to training afterwards—or, well, that’s how he feels at the start of the day. now that he’s waiting for his turn, it’s becoming a little tedious, and the urge to doodle on his questionnaire grows stronger with every passing minute. he isn’t even done filling it out, but as talented as jung haneul is, sitting still for longer than ten minutes is a skill he has yet to master. luckily for him, one of his friends was assigned to the same group as him and he knows he can always count on daeun to make any situation more lively.

he’s filling out the last portion of the questionnaire when she calls his name and scoots over to him. “yeah?” haneul replies, glancing up at her briefly while he continues to write, only pausing for a second when she asks a question that is typically daeun before jotting down the last couple of words. “orange juice and coffee?” he asks, making a face as he puts down the questionnaire next to him. “sounds disgusting, i wouldn’t risk it if i were you. if you need a place to hide from him, you can come stay with me.” his eyes crinkle with amusement. “are there any other weird combos he wants you to try?” he laughs and gently nudges his shoulder against hers. “oh! maybe one of them will give you superpowers. that’d be kind of cool.” and quite literally impossible, but it’s an interesting thought to entertain nonetheless.

when haneul is seven, he experiences his first heartbreak. his best friend moves away, and despite their promises to write and see each other over the summer, he can’t help but feel like a part of him has left along with the other boy. their new neighbours are nice, and his mom tells him they have a son only a year younger than him. haneul doesn’t like him, and he tells him as much the first time he sees him playing with dirt in front of their house before he even learns his name. it isn’t the boy’s fault his best friend had to move away, but he is upset and taking out his frustration on someone feels good in a way.

but then the boy looks up at him, all smiles and crinkled eyes. “i’m sorry your friend moved away,” the kid tells him, his expression turning solemn for a second before his bright smile returns once more. he sticks out one of his mud-covered hands, which haneul accepts wordlessly. “i’m minjae. i hope we can be friends!” not a chance, haneul wants to tell him, but there is something about minjae that draws him in. he sits down next to him and they spend the rest of the afternoon playing together, until minjae’s mom calls him inside for dinner. for a moment he forgets how sad he has been all week.

minjae looks at him, flashing another one of his innocent smiles. “can we play again tomorrow?”he asks. haneul doesn’t have the heart to say no, so he nods. minjae’s smile only brightens at his answer and he throws his arms around a bewildered haneul. “don’t forget, you promised!” he exclaims before sprinting towards his house when his mom calls for him a second time, a little more impatient this time.

a soft smile tugs at the corners of his mouth. maybe his new neighbours aren’t so bad after all.

nothing lasts forever. one day, only moments after he comes home from school, a twelve-year-old minjae bursts into his room and presses his tear-stained face into his chest, and haneul doesn’t hesitate wrapping his arms around the boy. he waits until minjae has calmed down before he asks any questions, and his friend manages to choke out that they’re moving away soon for his dad’s job. his lips quirk into a bitter smile as he continues rubbing circles on the other’s back in an attempt to soothe him. he should’ve seen this coming, but that doesn’t make it hurt any less. he doesn’t want to lose his friend. not again.

a month ━ that is all they have left together. they spend most of their days in each other’s presence, and on some they even manage to forget about minjae leaving. on one night, while camping out in his backyard, haneul suggests minjae moving in with them so he doesn’t have to leave. minjae’s eyes light up at that idea and he asks if his mom would be okay with that, to which haneul replies they will ask her in the morning. the idea of them becoming brothers has both of them giddy for the rest of the night. of course his mom says no. she tells them minjae’s parents would be sad if he didn’t come with them, and haneul wants to protest because he will be sad if minjae leaves. but he keeps that to himself, knowing she’s right.

a week later it’s time for minjae to leave. haneul tries to keep a smile on his face throughout the day, but the second he sees the tears in his friend’s eyes, he breaks down and doesn’t stop crying until the car with minjae and his family in it is long gone.

“we’ll meet again. i promise.”

hiya! i’m freya and this is my lost boy jung haneul — he’s incredibly indecisive about what he wants to do and loses focus very easily. there are only a few things he’s stuck with over the years, but i’ll tell you more about that under the cut! (or you can read his profile & my notes for him!) thank you so much for all the warm welcomes so far, i’ll respond to each and every one of you in the morning. i do have discord as well, if any of you would rather plot over there. just ask me for it in dms! ♡

haneul is a drummer. he has been playing the drums since he was a kid and always dreamed of being in a band. along with some friends, he formed one in high school, but they disbanded after they all graduated.

none of this changed when he joined legacy, but he developed an interest in dance and has gotten quite good at it. he’s proud of his progress, but thinks he has much to learn still. he often stays up late to get more practice in and can be really hard on himself when he doesn’t get it right.

he might initially come off as lazy(?) to people that don’t know him because he has many interests, but rarely sticks with them. in actuality he works really hard when he finds something that manages to keep his attention.

he’s made an appearance in a couple of commercials and has done some modelling work when he was younger. nothing significant, really. but he had a lot of fun doing it.

haneul is very affectionate, both physically and verbally, and just likes being around other people. he absolutely despises being by himself and will facetime a friend to keep him company if he finds himself alone at the dorms or anywhere else.

his kindness is not a weakness — he’s very easy to get along with and loves lending a hand to people who need it, but just as easily turns on someone if he knows they’re trying to take advantage of him or any of his friends.

he has a fox and an axolotl plushie on his bed that he took with him from home because they smell like his childhood bedroom and helped him settle into the dorms a bit easier. he still gets homesick from time to time because he hasn’t seen his parents in almost two years.

he has a black cat named cosmo who he thinks is an angel and would 100% sneak him into the company building if it didn’t get him in trouble. (click here for cat tax!) spoiler: cosmo is a menace, don’t trust a word haneul says about him.

fun fact: he can’t swim. he grew up surrounded by water, but actually never learned how to swim, so please don’t dunk him into the ocean or a pool unless you’re plotting his demise. in which case, be my guest.
