”oh! that’s interesting, i’ve never heard of the acronym method before,” hyunhee tells him, furrowing her brows as she thinks. it could have very well been something she was supposed to have learned during a workshop but either forgot or wasn’t paying enough attention for it to stick in her head. “i know we don’t have many lines, so it might seem silly that i’m struggling,” she says sheepishly. “but i appreciate your help! and i would love to go over our lines together,” the model tells him earnestly.

”that’s a good question.” hyunhee pauses to think. “now that i’m on the spot, i’m not sure? i think a song is easier to memorize because it’s catchy. i think it might be harder to memorize the rap verses, actually.” she laughs. “at least, memorize them in a way where the flow comes together, and sometimes it’s so fast that it’s easy to get tongue-tied if you’re not careful,” she tells him thoughtfully.

“you don’t rap though, do you?” she asks. “i think a lot of people tend to believe it’s easier because you’re ‘just talking’ instead of having to hit high notes, but i disagree. maybe i’m biased, but,” hyunhee shrugs. “it takes a little bit of skill. they’re both difficult in their own ways.”

sanghyun admitted when he heard about the acronym method, “it’s not a common memorization method, but one of the actors i’ve met in a musical introduced me to it. i’ve been told he learned it because he read somewhere that some american actors use it to memorize their lines.” nodding his head, sanghyun glanced around to see where he had left his script. even though it was a cf, he liked keeping the script nearby in case the director decided to change something at the last minute.

while grabbing the script from the table closest to him, he kept his attention on hyunhee as he listened to her. shaking his head, sanghyun revealed, “i don’t. but the few times i’ve tried? i was awful. like you said, people think it’s easier because it’s ‘just talking’, but the flow, beat, and rhythm are what really sell the meaning and impact of a rap.” recalling why he asked in the first place, sanghyun continued, “i was wondering if memorizing raps is easier because you can separate the process – learning the lyrics first, then layer in the flow, rhythm, and emphasis afterward. it’s kind of like acting, where you start by memorizing the dialogue before refining the performance. although, i guess a song’s melody, or just how catchy it is, probably helps with memorization too. i’m just guessing, though. i’m not a rapper, so it’s nice hearing how someone who actually does it approaches it.”

as he looked down at his script, he smiled. “anyway, i’m ready to rehearse whenever you are.”

“sanghyun.” he corrected her gently, knowing that her guess was close to his actual name. letting out a chuckle, he understood cherry’s words. the last time legacy had their specialized workshops, he was surprised by how the language workshops had assignments and exercises for them to do before their next class. it reminded him of his university days, but at the same time sanghyun had to remind himself that this was probably one of the ways the teachers could assess each person’s language abilities. “yeah, well they did say it was due next class and next class is today.” he stated as he resumed flipping through the pages of his notebook. as soon as he found the notes he had written in the previous class, he added, “they wanted us to fill out some vocabulary worksheets talking about food and drinks.” sanghyun paused, thinking about what they would learn next. he imagined that at some point grammar would be making its appearance, but as he experienced from past language workshops, grammar was sometimes the most difficult thing to grasp when it came to linguistics. he admitted with uncertainty, “i’m not quite sure how this would exactly pertain to the audition, but…i guess it might help in case they ask us to act out a scene in spanish.”

for a second it felt like cherry was back in school, studying and homework… when chery had picked her career as an actress, she definitely hadn’t expected… this. sure she knew she had to learn a lot of new things, but she’d assumed it would’ve been something she would need for acting, why did she need to speak spanish for acting? then again, she knew people that had learned weird… unique? things for their acting roles, like learning how to do a rubix cube, or something alike.

“i guess i must’ve zoned out when we were told that…” she bites her lip “i think even if i had done it, they wouldn’t have been very satisfied” she shrugs. “how’s it going for you and learning a new language? i can be honest and say i’m definitely struggling” she nods her head a bit. “i’m not sure if i’ll be able to act out a scene in spanish” then again, she still struggled a bit with doing a scene in korean. “are you picking up acting as well?”.

“they wouldn’t?” he questioned, not wanting to assume why cherry thought that way about the assignment. “um…” sanghyun pondered how he would answer her question. while it’s a common question to ask when learning a new language, sanghyun felt like spanish was one of those languages he should have learned with all of the traveling he did as a child. “it’s a bit of a challenge,” to him, it was more than just a bit since he had spent the first few days recalling his experience with learning japanese last year. “i thought my english fluency would help a lot here, but i’m not sure anymore.” he added belatedly as he felt a hint of embarrassment.

shifting his attention temporarily to his notebook, he shook his head when he heard cherry’s question about acting. “i’ve been picking up acting for a while actually. whenever i’m not modeling, i’m taking acting workshops on the side, but a lot of my knowledge and experience is towards stage acting. this will probably be my second audition for a film.” he wasn’t sure whether to even count his first foray to films considering that he only had a guest appearance. “is this your first time auditioning for a film?” sanghyun returned with a question, since he was curious to know how the other would plan for the audition.

hyunhee flips through the pages of her script, reading the lines silently in her head. the words go out of focus for a moment and she has to blink a few times to get the blurriness to go away. she's been staring for so long yet it's hard for her to memorize her lines despite only having a few of them.

she decides that it's time for a break, even if it's short since they have to begin filming soon. hyunhee looks up at sanghyun with a smile, formulating a few questions to ask the veteran model.

"it's not as easy to memorize lines in a script as it is to memorize lines in a song," hyunhee says with a laugh. "do you have any tips or tricks? i've been staring at these pages for too long now for nothing to have stuck in my head." she frowns.

to sanghyun, filming cfs combined a lot of elements that he enjoyed such as modeling and acting. but when it was with a game that he wasn’t too familiar with, there was the added challenge of understanding and remembering gaming terminology. thinking about that challenge reminded him of the different memorization techniques he had developed over time.

after hearing hyunhee’s question, sanghyun paused to think about the tips he’s tried and learned over the past few years. “reciting the lines with another partner helps.” he stated the first one that came to his mind, but sanghyun felt that he should have suggested something a bit more unique but still effective. “when i memorize lines, i split them into sections to make it less daunting. but i like using the acronym method where you write the first letter of each word and punctuation and memorize that first. the science behind it is that the letters and punctuations act as training wheels for your brain so that when you need help remembering the next word, your brain will know what letter that word starts with.” remembering what hyunhee had mentioned earlier, he added later on, “but i agree that it’s harder memorizing lines in a script than lines in a song, especially if the song has multiple people taking part in it.” 

a thought had popped in his mind that he never bothered to ask someone until now. “when you memorize lines in a song, is it easier for you to memorize the rap parts versus the singing ones?”

▸▸▸ MODELING MISSION 026 : ( NEXT STEPS )

over time, sanghyun’s meetings with jinho were rather positive in his eyes. as the model the manager knew the longest, sanghyun had gotten quite comfortable with the older man that their meetings were typically a mixture of professional yet laidback.

when asked on the type of work sanghyun wanted, he reassured the manager that he was happy with a lot of the gigs that he’s been given throughout his time as a model (eg. modeling, acting, releasing covers and song features, performing special stages, etc.) during his early modeling days, he was unsure if this was the right path for him but after future dreams 7, he really felt like a lot of his hard work had paid off. not only did he gain several fans, but many of them saw him more than a model. he also felt that he was slowly establishing his career and reputation in the musical acting scene, even though he believes that there are a lot that he needs to work on.

for future goals, sanghyun would like to try more characters and roles that are different from what he normally gravitates to (eg. intelligent and morally good [or heroic] characters). a lot of this would mean taking on roles that are less serious for him (eg. think romcom or anything lighthearted), which is partially why he’s been working on variety every so often to improve on that (but he’ll still be notorious for his pun jokes). aside from that, he would slowly like to work more on movies. while he’s done a few dramas in the past, he’s not too fond of the drama setting and filming schedule, which is why he focuses a lot on musical acting.

as for modeling, he always preferred cfs over runway since in his eyes, it’s the quickest way to earn money and it allows him to “act” (if it calls for it) or sometimes reveal bits of his personality. but he won’t turn down the offer to do runway since it occasionally gives him the opportunity to travel, even if it’s mostly for work purposes.

then for performances, sanghyun has thought of doing solo work after future dreams 7, but as someone who likes to plan and routines, he believes that he wants to focus more on improving his modeling and acting abilities first. he enjoys the instances he gets to perform as lgc boys because it allows him to perform on stage.

another goal that he wants to work on is to improve his language skills. after his fanmeetings, he’s realized that he’s known internationally as well and wants to be able to interact with those fans. while the journey to this goal is very slow, sanghyun hopes that when he’s not too busy he can really focus on learning a new language.

thanks to the dance concert, sanghyun started thinking more about wanting to create choreography for other groups and artists. he still thinks he’s lacking in this department so he’s been working on that as of late (or until his next big project happens, whatever it may be).

▸▸▸ SANGHYUN’S STORIES / THEME #40 : ( READING ) FILMED SOMETIME AROUND JUNE

checking out festivals and events was a recurring theme that sanghyun would show whenever he was posting for his personal channel. on several occasions, there was some story behind him visiting a particular event but today was one of those moments when he stumbled upon an event after visiting one of his friends’ restaurants.

luckily, he had one of his books stored inside his bag so when he saw the countless couches and chairs, he decided to turn on the camera and show what he was seeing so far. “today i’m at the seoul outdoor library, which i heard will be available until the end of this month before taking a brief break.” sanghyun introduced to the viewers while searching slowly for a place where he could film and read his book. 

with the live orchestra music playing in the background, sanghyun admitted, “you know, i think this would have been a dream for me as a kid. i would always see those picturesque libraries in movies and i wanted to have a library room filled with books that held a lot of meaning to me.” seeing that there was a corner with no one around except him and the couches, he sat down on a couch and placed his camera nearby. hoping to capture a good angle of himself and the view around him, sanghyun rearranged the camera a bit before nodding in satisfaction.

“what was i saying before…” he muttered, trying to recall what he told the camera before. after a second or two, he remembered and continued on, “oh, but i think right now a lot of my library would be filled with magazines that i’ve modeled for.” he chuckled, knowing that his collection of magazines kept growing. “anyways, i’m going to take a moment to enjoy the vibes and do some reading. i’m reading this historical fiction book since i wanted to take a break from all of the nonfiction i’ve been reading as of late.” it was unlike him to read fiction books nowadays, but whenever he needed to study or research something for his projects, he would look through them for ideas (but that was something he hoped none of the fans would catch on).

“i’m going to shift the camera a bit towards the scenery in front of me so all of you can enjoy it as much as i do.” with that, he adjusted the camera towards the view and settled back into his book. he only stopped reading and filming when he noticed more people approaching the outdoor library’s corner, wary of being recognized while filming.

it was hard for yoojin to act normal, even if he had been a trainee for so many years and interacted with a lot of idols on a daily basis, especially if it was someone he admired, like sanghyun. 

his smile was ridiculously wide, just like his eyes, when the older man called him by his name, recognizing him. it made him feel a little better, to be seen as someone and not just a nameless face. “you remembered, hyung, that’s fantastic.”

taking the napkins, even if the accident had been caused by him, yoojin shook his head dismissively, thinking there was no way he could blame the other man for something he caused. 

“thank you hyung, but no. i’m not going to legacy now”, he opened a smile, pointing to the building behind him. “i give some people dance classes, during my days off.” feeling a little brave, he shrugged, “would you like to check it out?”

letting out a chuckle, he joked good-naturedly, “it helps to have good memory.” ever since he was a child, sanghyun had made a habit of remembering people’s names. his grandfather’s words stayed with him — that remembering a name was a way of showing someone they mattered.

hearing yoojin’s response, sanghyun’s brow quirked slightly. even if yoojin wasn’t going to legacy, he knew he should respect boundaries and not pry further into the other’s life. still, learning that yoojin taught dance reminded him of his own beginnings as a dancer. contrary to what many assumed about him now, sanghyun was certain he wouldn’t be the dancer he was today if not for the dance academy he attended in his free time.

“you know, i’ve actually been meaning to check this place out whenever i visit one of my friend’s restaurants.” he admitted, glancing at the building before looking back at yoojin. “i just never went in. i assumed i’d need some kind of registration or invitation.” he paused, then nodded belatedly. “but i’ve got time today. my friend probably won’t mind me being a bit late.”

sanghyun was unsure whether learning languages this time around was in his favor considering that he wasn’t pressured to learn a new language and a skill at the same time. but since the language that was requested to learn for the audition was spanish, it left him regretting his childhood days when he would be surrounded by people who were fluent in the language. but alas, sanghyun was spending one of his days attending a spanish workshop with other people and while waiting for class to start, his mind contemplated between reviewing last class’s lessons or initiating a conversation with whoever was near him. as he flipped through the pages of his notebook, he noticed who was seated next to him. “hi. you’re cherry, right?” he asked as he tried to recall her name. it had been a while since he interacted with some of the actors despite being in the same subsidiary, but he had to remind himself that it was good to network and get to know others. there was a pause between his words as he wondered what to ask next. “did you do the homework assignment?” he asked a few seconds later, hoping to keep the conversation going.

cherry had finished university a while ago, and she had expected the torture called “studying” would’ve ended once she finished school, apparently not. 

cherry had never ever in her life been good at studying, and how she managed to usually pass her tests, is still a mystery no one knows. she’s not smart, she can admit that much, she has great other qualities, but she can very easily admit she’s closer to dumb than smart. and then here it came, legacy told her to study spanish, and suddenly she was taking spanish workshops. but this wasn’t the first time legacy had her learning a new language, once she joined she was told to work on her korean, sure, she did that, then they told her to learn japanese, she did that, now she was learning spanish, when would all of this end.

▸▸▸ CASTING CALL 020 : ( PROJECT WR AUDITION / PROMPT A )

there’s a clue in front of sanghyun that stands out but to others, they were busily looking at other areas of the room searching for something else. taking a few cautious steps towards where the book was located, he spotted that something was off.

“take a look at this,” sanghyun began speaking, partially to break the silence while the other was to encourage the people around him to pay attention to what he was going to say. “the book cover looks different.” he hoped that someone would pick up with what he was going to say, but it didn’t take too long before sanghyun realized that he had to do a bit of nudging to convince them why he brought the clue up in the first place.

“i’m aware that there are two versions of this book — one that was written in early 90s with the title at the center of the black cover and a more recent one, published during the late 90s with a crimson hard cover and a golden embellishment at the back of it.” he explained in detail, even if the ideas were created on the spot. “based on the descriptions, this would be the first version, however look at the title of the book.” he paused, pretending that the group was looking at the cover altogether.

“there’s a spelling mistake on the cover. published books typically don’t have spelling mistakes, especially if they’ve been reviewed by an editor. it'll look unprofessional to the author and the publishing group if there are any spelling mistakes. this means that this is an unofficial copy or…” he thought about his words carefully. “…a fake book. and we can’t ignore this book because why would it be here anyways? it doesn’t seem right for the victim to have something like this unless the culprit left it…or it’s the victim’s final message. that’s why i think we should examine this book a bit further.” he stared at the group one last time, hoping that his explanation was persuasive enough to see how important the book was.

▸▸▸ SANGHYUN’S STORIES / THEME : ( APPLE ) FILMED SOMETIME AROUND APRIL

originally, sanghyun had plans of going apple picking during april but with the dance practice and timebox’s summer collection taking up most of his time, he didn’t have enough time to plan ahead. so instead, he decides to dedicate the newest episode to apples, but specifically towards a dish that he liked making for his prepared meals.

after showing the camera the ingredients one would need to make apple kimchi, he explained, “i know that other kinds of kimchi are well-known compared to this, but i consider this one of my favorite types. i tend to make this more around this season when apples are in season and the best part about it is that it’s very quick and easy to make.”

sanghyun started washing the scallions and apples first before adding in the dry ingredients. while remaining quiet, he thought about how he had learned how to make the dish and whether to share the story to the viewers. “since my grandfather liked visiting farms and knew people who were farmers, i remembered some of the elderly ladies teaching my grandmother and me dishes we could make with the produce. i don’t remember the name of the lady who shared this recipe, but the credit goes to her instead of me.” he admitted humbly, hoping that the person would find the video or one of her relatives. 

he added the apples and scallions later on before mixing everything together. once he was satisfied with how it looked, he took a bite to see if it tasted good before giving a thumbs up to the camera. “it’s good and quite refreshing. i’ll put some of this in a bowl and the rest in a storage container. you can also try other kinds of apples besides the one i used, but this is my personal favorite.” soon after, he was seen with the bowl of apple kimchi in front of him and concluded the video with a smile followed by his encouragement for his viewers to try it out and let him know what he should make next.

junkyu chuckles at the comment, his thoughts automatically shifting to the key part in lovely runner. if only there really was a watch that could turn back time to fix things. "let me know when it's complete, i'll be your first customer." the younger replies with a small chuckle, trying his best to match the light-heartedness. "maybe one day." junkyu liked to believe that everything happened for a reason, it was something that he'd tell himself and others, but taking that kind of advice when it was something bad that happened to him? it was a whole can of worms to unravel.

he nods slowly, small movements as he takes a silent deep breath. "you just.. never think it's going to be you, in that position, right?" junkyu mumbles, taking a small glance at sanghyun. for all the time in the past where junkyu was careful, knew that pushing himself wouldn't do any good and just drain him even more — the one time he thinks it'll be okay to keep pushing through is the only time it fell back on him and cost him the career he had so desperately wanted and worked hard for. "it wouldn't be the same though, will it? i can't really see myself ever with anyone to call my group members again. maybe one day in the future an opportunity will show up, i guess we'll wait and see." if there was one good thing that came from all of this, was his new relationship with akio. they had went through thick and thin to get to where they are now, a lot of pain and hidden feelings, unsaid words.

he tries to take everything sanghyun says to heart, to truly listen and take his advice since his advice was something that junkyu had always appreciated. it was hard, and he knows it will be still and while he doesn't think some things will help right now, junkyu knows it will in the future when his feelings settle more. this time, a more freeing laugh escapes the younger. "if they're really your fans, they'd be over the moon at however many covers you post. i don't think they'd mind it at all, even i'm your fan, hyung."

“i think when it comes to certain situations, you’re more inclined to believe that you will be the exception simply because it’s you.” sanghyun stated, reflecting on his words a bit longer. it was something he did every so often as well, but his logical side reminded him that there was always a chance something could go wrong, even if the margin of error was small.

shaking his head, he agreed with junkyu. “it won’t be the same, but then again was it the same to you when you joined versus after what happened to type zero?” he returned with a question, letting the other think about it a bit longer before continuing on. “but in the meantime, take this opportunity to open yourself up to whatever comes your way. modeling is quite different than being an idol, but there are some benefits too.” while he had pointed out a few of the benefits, the rest…well, sanghyun hoped that junkyu could see the freedom modeling had and how it was very much a “what you put in is what you get” type of career.

chuckling at junkyu’s words, sanghyun had to admit that his words had some truth to it. the loyal fans would always support whatever he does, but sanghyun realized over the course of his career that he had encountered older fans during his early days rather than younger ones. “you get what i mean though,” he said on a lighthearted note. “there aren’t that many people in this subsidiary that release covers on the company’s youtube channel. i know they have their own reasons, but i’m sure some of those company fans would be excited to see someone else too. so even if the idol path may not work out, there are still other ways to showcase what you’ve been practicing all these years.” he paused before thinking about a thought that popped in his mind earlier. “speaking of practice, did you practice your runway walk for fashion week? since i’m here, i could give you some feedback if you need some.”

▸▸▸ ONEART DANCE STUDIO CONCERT : ( REFLECTION )

after the dance concert, sanghyun felt a sense of accomplishment and rejuvenation. it reminded him of his beginnings as a dancer and what he could work on, even with years of experience. but now that he was having a meeting with his manager, sanghyun felt comfortable sharing his thoughts.

“how did you feel preparing for this concert? were there any moments that surprised you about yourself?”

“i felt comfortable and prepared during this time. as the assistant, i focused more on the technicalities – what everyone needed to work on to make the performance turn out great, making sure that the message was conveyed through the movement and body language, those kinds of aspects. it’s something that i’m comfortable doing because it’s more straightforward.” sanghyun began explaining, thinking belatedly about how the concert itself was truly a mixture of what he was good at. “one moment that surprised me about myself was how my knowledge of the different styles helped especially with the final performance. hip hop was always the first dance style i learned, but when i joined legacy, i learned different styles too. i’ve been focusing on contemporary as of late because i was inspired by many of the musical performances i’ve seen throughout my career. i’m happy to say that it paid off in the final part when contemporary was best suited for that moment.”

“which part of your performance are you most proud of?”

sanghyun chuckled before responding, “i’d be biased to say my part, but i really believe the final part because it was a combination of everything you see from the first two acts. not only do you see all of the commonalities and differences in dancing come together, but you also see everyone join collectively too. to me, i think it’s a great way to end a performance that revolves around the concept of ambition.”  

“looking back, what did you learn about your own dancing or stage presence?”

“i think this whole experience reminded me that there are so many other styles that i’ve yet to learn. i don’t know if i would ever get a chance to be the leader for something like this, but watching the leaders brainstorm and explain to me their ideas made me ask myself, ‘if i had to create the choreography to a dance related to an emotion, how would i do it?’ this opportunity made me more motivated to learn other dance styles during my spare time. but of course, i would like to prioritize my modeling career.” he said the latter lightheartedly as a way of reassuring his manager.

“how will this concert experience shape your next steps or projects?”

“as i mentioned earlier, it certainly motivated me to learn other dance styles besides the ones i’m familiar with.” he repeated while thinking of another thought that had crossed his mind. “but it makes me hope that if the chance allows me, i’d like to choreograph for some of legacy’s groups and artists. when i was a trainee, i’d actually try to choreograph a song based on what i was hearing before i saw the choreography video to help me work on my creative skills. i’m not sure if my choreography skills are that great for them to use it for an original song, but i hope it does in the future.” sanghyun ended the interview with a hopeful note, wishing that the dance concert would be the first step of something great.
