Useful things #1 : on writing
I often think I woud like to share what has been useful for me in my work. The usual question I ask myself is : what has helped me the most ? When I started working, all of my attention was focused on getting the job done well and in time. I was working in my mother tongue (french) and I felt like it was easy to understand what was expected of me, so I didn't feel I had to pay too much attention to communication. I have now been working with artists, programmers, producers, in France and in Finland, in small, mid-sized and now in a large organization, in french and in english. Through these years of experience and the use of different languages I have realized how incredibly common it is to overlook communication and to not understand one another, whether we use our mother tongue or a foreign language. One thing I feel has helped me tremendously through all these years, is having read a book called "On writing, a memoir of the craft" by Stephen King. It's a really nice mix of life stories and recommendations on writing, and I recommend it to anyone interested a little bit in writing, and more broadly in communicating. It's a short read, full of great advice, and I believe it can help more people be better at writing and communicating as it did for me.
