good night remember that zuko always has been and always will be gay
jack kerouac went on one gayass road trip and now we have to deal with all of this
the secret to organising any kind of trip with your friends is to become the benevolent dictator. do NOT wait for everyone to provide a consensus on things before you book anything. do it and then ask for feedback after. do not ask people what they would like to do just tell them what is happening and let them all nod along like the sheep they are. this is the ONLY way to coordinate a group of adults in their 20s/30s
odyssey is a crazy name for a car
had water for the first time since the fast started bc i was feeling a bit faint and my sweat glands were like Ok time to go crazy
the thing is i wanna get more into ancient epics bc im not all that familiar w any aside from the one god gave us and i really do love ancient stories. they persist for a reason yknow. but im getting so annoyed w the posts suggested to me by classics ppl on tumblr lol
ok instead of posting about other ppls posting. here's an opinion i have about the odyssey (2026). i do think there's a certain sensibility to it that won't allow odysseus to truly be a complex character. that it wants to tell us that odysseus is flawed but isnt actually so interested in showcasing his flaws beyond the surface. and this does relate to how he didn't come across as quite as deceitful or arrogant as his character in homer's epic (as i understand it) is. and this is unfortunate but i find it interesting that the same can be said of nolan's oppenheimer; oppenheimer and odysseus are both tortured with guilt over something that the narrative never fully allowed them to have a choice over. which makes them more sympathetic at the expense of making them less interesting. and in both cases, too, the victims of the atrocities designed by the heroes aren't given any interiority. in oppenheimer, it was a very notable choice to not have a single japanese person onscreen. in a story like the odyssey, i do think the story would've benefitted from showing any of the iliad's trojan characters' perspectives on anything. also i <3 cassandra. ultimately in both of these cases it's a choice between focusing on the hero's internal processing of the events vs taking the time (in an already very long movie) to show the wider impact. i think i would've found the latter more compelling
i do think being annoyed by les mis fandom prompted me to develop very specific ways of thinking about political themes in fiction lol i understand that not everyone has had this same experience as me
also i fully don't get why people are calling the odyssey fashy unless it's just the idea of the west as the inheritors of ancient greece/the occasional framing of ancient greece as one coherent entity. which like. really wasn't particularly present imo? or like. it's present so that it can be used as a storytelling device about the fall of the american empire. and obviously it's interesting to examine the assumptions necessary for that to work as a storytelling device but my goal when talking about fiction isn't to condemn stuff like this lol
it's crazy bc developing opinions on art is one of my favorite hobbies and i love to have opinions about things that don't matter but at the end of the day sometimes it depends. or like. part of the task of being correct about everything is acknowledging that sometimes other people have points
can't sleep at all im stuck with reading/watching various posts where people have opinions about the odyssey
I wish insomnia at least gave you more usable hours in the day instead of just more hours where you are stupid
i really can't sleep if its above 72f/21c and like a bit more than that if I have a fan. i don't know how other people manage
im trying to figure out what other movie line im reminded of with "our age of bronze is collapsing" . best comparisons i can think of are "somehow palpatine returned" and "i will no longer be the prince of shame and secrets" but they're not quite the same thing
i did give this movie 4.5 stars on letterboxd bc that's how affective i found it but the .5 stars lost was largely bc i could not simply ignore how clunky some of the dialogue was lol

ok i don't usually look much at letterboxd reviews written by ppl who idk so i imagine this is indeed common but whyyy are the top reviews for the odyssey all like 1-line jokes that have been made on twitter/tumblr a million times already like it legitimately feels disrespectful
