The sound of glass breaking and the dull thud of boots on the hall floor brought an ominous tension with it, an unwelcome shudder coursing through the boy where he huddled under the thin blanket. One arm wrapped protectively around his brother’s slighter frame, mindful of the bruises he knew lingered beneath the threadbare shirt – bruises he’d been unable to prevent, no matter how hard he tried.
“S’alright,” Liam murmured, tightening his grip ever so slightly in reassurance. He could feel Killian shivering, though whether it was from cold or fear he couldn’t guess; most probably a combination of both. “He’ll be out soon, you know he will.”
It had been this way for as long as he could remember, always running interference between his father’s heavy hand and his brother, who seemed to be the elder Jones’ favorite target during his drunken rages. Davy blamed Killian for all the ills in his world, though Liam had never been able to understand why it was his little brother who bore the brunt of the Irishman’s temper – wasn’t he just as much to blame as Killian? Yet when fists were raised in anger, Liam was rarely ever the one to feel the blow.
Another shudder worked its way through the smaller boy’s frame, a quiet sound of distress escaping Killian as those footsteps drew nearer, and Liam instinctively tucked his brother closer against his side, shielding him with his own body despite the absence of immediate danger. Fingers tangled in the dark hair and scratched at Killian’s scalp in what he hoped was a comforting gesture.
“I’m not gonna let ‘im hurt you, Killy,” he whispered into the darkness. “I promise.”
