“Rodeo clownin?” She asked with a laugh, she couldn’t imagine the job. “That sounds like a better story than all this.”Â

His head cocked to the side, “I don’t think so. You don’t usually walk around during them, right? Unless that’s something new.”
“No, I don’t usually walk around. I must have been daydreaming.” She said with a laugh. “You look handsome today, how are you sugar?”

“Me?” She tilted her head to the side. “Who do I look like?”
“I can’t put my finger on it now.” She said with a shrug.Â

Ben was silent as he took the towel, wiping the counter as the coffee tanned the edges. He owed it to her, he figured. Or, rather, not her, but to people. Certain people and she was one of them and lord, he’d always been heartless but it had been a bit easier to stomach before he could touch the pain and smell the waves of it coming from every inch of his flat, his car, this mug, now, of all things. “I’m fine,” he muttered, rinsing the stain from the cotton and wringing the moisture out. Foreign words came easy as he apologized, “Sorry, I dunno what came over me,” and tended to what was left of the cup. He was damn curious now of all things, and this time he savored the sip and the scene that played. “How long’ve you been here, anyway?”
Maybe it was because she kept so much hurt safely tucked away in her head, that Libby knew that something had been triggered in Ben. She couldn’t be sure if it was the coffee, or her voice, or the way the coffee smelt, but she was gentle as she looked at him now. She just nodded when he said he was fine. Libby didn’t know him well enough to argue. “It’s alright no need to cry over split coffee.” She said with a small smile not pushing the matter any further. Instead, the conversation turned to her. “A while now had to get out fast and I heard this was a good place.” Â

“Please, it’s more a relief.”Â

“What made you change your mind?” He didn’t know many women who would change their mind. “A few years of torturing me until it happens.” Brooks laughed, finishing up the plate in front of him. “Elsa’s fine on her own, so I can be just fine doing the same.”
“My ex,” She said with a sort laugh, without even really thinking. “It’ll make it all the sweeter for her if it does happen.” Libby argued. She took the empty plate from him and placed it in the sink. “I always thought you seemed like an Elsa.”Â

“It’s alright. Did you need help finding someone?”
“No, no, I’m fine thanks. Sorry for the mix-up.”

“I’d hope you know who I was by now.”
“Brookys, hey, was I-” She stopped while she took in her surroundings. “I was on another plan?”

Brooks nodded, taking a bite of food. “Of course she is. She’s probably been thinking about them since I was born.” It wasn’t something he was even near thinking about wanting. “Eh, I’m not really sure it’s something I really want.”
“Always thought I want that stuff.” She with a shrug looking away from him. Before smiling back up at him. “No need to decided right now, I’m sure your Mom will wait a few years. Or yeah know, there is no one formula for a good life. Marriage and kids aren’t for everyone. Despite what Disney will have you believe.”Â

“Umm that guy from that movie you know? I’m probably not helping sorry.”
“Sorry, you just looked like someone I knew.”Â

“Uh huh, trying to make up for it.” He laughed, gladly taking the plate from her. Brooks started eating, talking in between bites. “That’s fine and all, but she’s been really chatty about it since my birthday.”
“Ah, she’s ready for grandbabies?” Libby asked with a smile. Her husband’s Mother had been the same way. Thank god they never acted on it. “I’m sure, she’ll get her way eventually,” Liddy said with a laugh. Brooks was a good looking guy and sweet under his mask of being a player. She wasn’t lying any girl would be lucky to have him.
“Look, look, we are both really beautiful people.” Kit winked at the person in front of him. “We have the whole night to ourselves. Why don’t we just..take it easy, yeah? Go upstairs, have a drink, see where the night goes?”
“Yeah, take it easy sure,” Libby was quite certain how it had gotten to this point but she tried not to act too alarmed. “Why don’t we have drinks down here first?” She offered.Â
brooksmontgomery:
Brooks gave her a confused look, “Wrong impression of you? She loves you. It’s more about me than you. She’d say the same thing if I brought any other girl around too.” He laughed, “don’t look like it’d be the end of the world.”
“No, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Anybody be lucky to be with you sweet pea.” She smiled again handing him a plate trying to back peddle a bit. “Your Mom just wants to see you happy I’m sure.”
