mens response to women who don't want to read misogynistic lit is usually 'get over it! literature is supposed to make you uncomfortable!' but reading about misogyny doesn't make me uncomfortable, exactly. it makes me bored. there's a point in most canonical works where the author talks about how women are inferior, or how much he hates his wife, or violent sexism is described, and i dont feel shocked or disturbed. how could i? it's in basically every classic. even works by female authors address it, even to just point out their disagreement. sexism is a part of every woman's life, it's a part of my life, and i know already how men feel about women--i don't even notice anymore when it's said directly. it's normal. so the question i give in response is: why am i the one expected to be uncomfortable, over and over and over? why, when women try to disturb you in the same way you try to disturb us, is it suddenly unacceptable? are you only okay with 'uncomfortable' literature when you are the one attacking others?
