On my walk with the dog early this afternoon, I spotted something in the street. As I got a bit closer I saw that it was this very tiny hummingbird, about the size of my thumb's distal phalange (top part of the thumb). The hummingbird was puffed up, but blinking, and had a long trail of waste behind him. He'd been there for a while. It was cold last night (for this area) so I figured he'd likely been stunned by something, landed in the street, perhaps went into torpor and just got too cold, especially during the rain early this morning. I ran back to the house and got my gloves and very gently scooped him up. I kept him warm there for about 5 minutes while my son retrieved a box and some paper towels. I mixed a very small amount of sugar water and gave him a tiny amount, which he slowly took at first then got a bit more active. After several minutes he started to shake and move and was able to control his movements a bit. After twenty minutes his feathers were back to normal and he flew off. My son and I watched him as he kept flying back and forth around us, he quickly joined the other hummingbirds in the area trees. :D #hummingbird #tiny #bird #avian #nature #creature #cute #nov27 #2015
