The first astrologers knew only 1022 fixed stars and 7 planets (among which were the sun and the moon); we can therefore criticize them for believing in a system that lost value when the planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were discovered. But it is not certain that these astrologers would have added them to the list, which should have contained only the seven closest celestial bodies, corresponding to the seven days of the week. Moreover, the twelve constellations of the Zodiac, in relation to the twelve months of the year, were chosen by them at a time when fifteen other constellations had already been identified. It is not simplistic to think that the planets influence aggressiveness or sexuality simply because they are called Mars and Venus, since they received these names after deductions about their respective effects. The fastest of the planets, which completes its sidereal revolution in 48 days, was consequently named Mercury, the winged-footed god.
