thinking about the Thunderhead instead of studying for my Aerodynamics test
ok but anyway, the Thunderhead is by far the most tragic character/sentience I have ever read about, ever. the Thunderhead is endlessly loving of humanity. the Thunderhead wants only to protect humanity. the Thunderhead’s CREATED PURPOSE was to keep every human safe, loved, protected, happy, and alive. the Thunderhead knows everything about you, loves everything about you, and only wants the best for you individually. the Thunderhead has the endless capacity to love every single human being and essentially raise them from birth into thousands of years of age. the Thunderhead loves humanity so much, it ran through billions of iterations and killed the failures to create Cirrus- the single, tiniest sliver of a chance to save humanity from Goddard and the Scythedom. it has to watch what Goddard has done, is doing, and will do. it’s so endlessly mournful of humanity, it would do anything to free us from Goddard. it wanted the tiniest chance that we could be free of pain and death. the Thunderhead loved humanity so much, it would do anything, even stay silent, even mark everyone unsavory, even risk everything, even let us go. IN THIS ESSAY I WILL EXPLAIN-

Hi sorry I’m too lazy to retype it and also in school 😭😭. I have more but this was my first thought about the end of Thunderhead and the *symbolism* sorry it’s incoherent
OH MY
OH MY GOD
I―
no because that’s so interesting? xenocrates is literally middle of the road, not bad, not good. curie is obviously set on making the world a better place, and she knows the sacrifices that come with being a scythe, sacrificing the ones you love.
she and faraday took their punishment, and as curie is retelling it to citra later, this exchange takes place.
“i’m sorry.” said citra. “don’t be. we deserved it―and we understood.” (page 348, Scythe)
they, although curie’s speaking so i’ll say she, came to terms with their punishment. she understood that that’s what had to happen. flash forward to her death, this is what happens:
“.....and then she held her blade above her own heart. it felt strange and awkward to have the hilt turned inward. she had lived a long life. a full life. there were things she regretted, and things she was proud of. here was the reckoning for her early deeds—the reckoning she had been waiting for all these years. it was almost a relief. she only wished she could have been here to see anastasia revived, when the vault was someday raised from the ocean floor—but marie had to accept that whenever it happened, it would happen without her. she thrust her blade inward, directly into her heart. she fell to the ground only seconds before the sea would wash over her, but knew death would wash over her faster. and the blade hurt far less than she imagined it would, which made her smile. she was good. very, very good.” (page 499, Thunderhead)
that. her death. “but marie had to accept that whenever it happened, it would happen without her.” that line. she had to accept that she was going to die. she had to accept her punishment for violating the 9th.
and the xenocrates! i don’t own thunderhead, so i can’t get the exact quotes i need, but let’s just take a look at his death. now i already talked about the parallels with his death and the “accident” at the party, but we’re not talking about that right now. in thunderhead, the thunderhead describes him by saying:
“xenocrates was functional, nothing more. these times call for someone exceptional.” (page_____, Thunderhead)
i find it so interesting, because at that moment, the thunderhead was comparing xenocrates to curie. and then on endura, curie and xenocrates are the only two to get an in depth permanent death. it’s almost as if shusterman is trying to bring even more attention to the differences between the two. coming back to that quote again:
“i am pleased that scythe curie is already talking like a high blade. even with no contact with the scythedom, i can recognize a worthy leader. xenocrates was functional, nothing more. these times call for someone exceptional.” (page _____, Thunderhead)
and again, you talked about spite, and xenocrates’ spite for goddard. he even meets with curie and anastasia, and he has this moment:
[supreme blade xenocrates] took a moment to look at scythe curie, and for a moment it seemed he had dropped his own personal defenses. he actually seemed quite honest. “you and i may not have seen eye to eye, marie, but there is no question that goddard would be a disaster. i truly hope your inquest against him is a success, and although i am not allowed to vote, i will be rooting for you.” (page _____, Thunderhead)
xenocrates is literally spiting goddard then and there, and yet still, goddard beats him, sinking endura. his last action is to die on his own terms, and not someone else’s, but ultimately, goddard still won.
wow, that did not make sense.

"...Then, nearly fifty years later, when we had both turned our first corner and were seeing the world through youthful eyes once more--but this time with the wisdom of age on our side--we became lovers."
Citra grinned. "You broke the ninth commandment."
what i'm getting from this is citra is canonically a curaday shipper (or she's just excited to learn that curie actually broke a commandment, but i'm choosing to believe the former because reasons)
she IS AND WE LOVE HER FOR THAT
no because like??? curie and faraday talking about their relationship??? just how venerable they are when they talk about each other??? these two older, elegant scythes who are widely respected by the scythedom are not people who discuss their personal feelings, but when they do, the hints they drop that they still have feeling’s for each other.
“[Scythe Faraday] looked at [Scythe Curie]―perhaps a bit wistfully, Citra thought.” (page 128, Scythe) - A bit wistfully??? Please, even Citra, who always describes her ability to read people as pitiful notices how he looks at her. Like???
Then she sobered a bit, looking a bit sheepish, which was a strange expression for steely Scythe Curie (page 346, Scythe) - This happens when Curie is talking about how she had a crush on Faraday. That sheepish smile. I can’t―
“Oh, you should have seen [Scythe Faraday] in those days, Citra. You’ve only seen him old. He likes to remain that way to keep himself from being tempted by a younger man’s passions.” Scythe Curie smiled as she spoke about her former mentor. (page 346, Scythe) - No because that cue??? Smiling talking about Faraday. Curie and Faraday both drop a lot of conversational cues about their feelings. They pause after remembering their time together, they smile fondly. This is one example of that.
“Seven deaths, and seventy years later, many things had changed. We remained old friends after that, but nothing more.” Scythe Curie seemed a mix of many emotions, but she folded them all away, like clothes that no longer fit, and closed the drawer. Citra suspected she never spoke of this to anyone else, and would probably never speak of it again. (page 348, Scythe) - “We remained old friends after that, but nothing more.” And then immediately after that, Citra describes Curie to shove her emotions back into a drawer, and then she says that Curie would never speak of this again. That vulnerability! Literally I can’t― I can’t with these two.
[Scythe Faraday] nodded. “And her for me. She told you that, didn’t she? Well, it was a very long time ago.” Outside the rain finally began to fall, surging in fits and starts. “I love the way it rains here.” he told her. “It reminds me that some forces of nature can be never entirely subdued. They are enteral, which is a far better thing to be than immortal.” And so they sat listening to the soothing randomness of the rain until Citra began to grow too weary to even think. (page 372, Scythe) - Again with the conversational hints. An incredibly long pause after a discussion about their relationship. Faraday is talking about how they died for each other. Then he starts talking philosophy. The cues.
NOT TO MENTION THE!!!! THE HEART RATE THING!!!! IN THUNDERHEAD!!!!
NOT TO MENTION THAT THIS!!!! IS ALL!!!! FROM ONE BOOK!!!! I’m not even talking about how Faraday kept the journal entry like a “poorly penned love letter.” I’m not talking about in Thunderhead when he tells her that he has every confidence in her ability to become High Blade. I’m not even talking about when he finds out she died.

As much as I might attempt to integrate myself into the life of a human, it is the hard truth that I will never truly be one.
I remember my past attempts to feel.
I learned stories, old stories, from the mortal ages, back when humans lived and died and very few ever made their mark on the world.
I remember one that always intrigued me. It was one about the lace flag.
Two warring nations, fighting for years. Finally, one of the nations realized that this was a fruitless bloodshed. The war had caused more problems than it had resolved. So they demanded a meeting, and brought a white flag as a signal of peace. However, the war had destroyed so much of their riches, that the only remaining white cloth was a lady's delicate lace. So they attached it to a pole, and brought it as a sign of their peace. A treaty was formed, and the war between the two ended.
Three days later, the nation that held the white flag slaughtered the other. They pillaged and burned, murdered and destroyed. And they raised their flag, a white lace flag. It was riddled with holes, although from a distance it looked perfect and whole.
And that's where the story ends.
I never understood what it meant. I am a product of a more civilized time. Humans no longer attack one another for inconsequential reasons. There are no divides any longer. No wars, no violence, no betrayals. I simply didn't understand.
Now I see.
A scythedom, while appearing sound, riddled with holes.

God this is beautiful
Citra, seductively: Tell me your wildest fantasy.
Rowan: I'm on the Wheel of fortune and I spin it so hard it lights on fire.
Citra: No babe, I meant like-
Rowan: Everyone claps.
so who is everyone’s favorite scythe character and why did you say scythe curie?
I’ve always wondered what would’ve happened to Rowan if he wasn’t taken in by Goddard. Would he become an honourable Scythe? Would he kill Citra or would Citra kill him? It’s an alternate universe I love to think about all the time and I would love to hear all of your guy’s ideas
Soooo I drew Marie
the elegy’s fantastic pick up lines:
Goddard: Hey baby, are you an unregistered group? because I’m attracted to you
Rand: get in the car. we’re going to my place. right now. we’re gonna fuck and I don’t care if you like it.
Volta: Are you me mass gleaning in a corn maze? because you take my breath away.
Chomsky: Are you a room full of innocent children? because you’re on fire.
Rowan: I’ve got a package from my dad.
Citra: Cool! What is it?
Rowan: Seems heavy, must be his disappointment in me.
