What if.....
Whispers of the desert
My first fanfic! Enjoy!
The sun dipped behind the dunes as the group rode away from Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead crumbling into golden dust behind them. The Medjai watched from afar, silent guardians fading into the sands.
Rick O’Connell looked over at Evelyn. Her hair was tousled, her cheeks smudged with soot and sun, and her eyes sparkled with the kind of curiosity only someone who had kissed death could carry. She had never looked more beautiful to him.
They rode in silence for a while, until Evelyn leaned toward him.
“You know,” she said, voice soft, “I never thanked you for saving my life… multiple times.”
Rick smirked. “You can thank me with a drink when we’re back in Cairo. Or, you know… dinner. Or—”
She kissed him.
It was bold, unhesitating. The kind of kiss that had nothing to do with politeness or propriety, and everything to do with being alive after nearly dying in the arms of a cursed mummy. Their camels shuffled awkwardly as they tried to stay balanced, laughing breathlessly between kisses.
That night, they stopped at a desert oasis. Jonathan wandered off with the gold-laden saddlebags, muttering about a poker game in Alexandria. The two were finally alone.
By firelight, Evelyn sat cross-legged, studying Rick’s face like it was an ancient tablet she couldn’t wait to translate.
“You really were just a mercenary, weren’t you?” she teased.
“And you were just a librarian,” he shot back.
They fell into laughter, and then silence, broken only by the wind rustling palm fronds above. Evelyn leaned her head against his shoulder, and Rick hesitantly wrapped an arm around her.
“You don’t have to keep fighting anymore,” she whispered. “Not alone.”
“I don’t want to,” he said.
And under a sky bursting with stars, they kissed again. Not out of fear, not from adrenaline — but out of something warm and calm, like the slow pull of the Nile itself.
In the end, the greatest treasure they took from Hamunaptra wasn’t gold, or gems, or forgotten scrolls. It was each other.
By the way The Mummy still remains one of the best movies of all time. In case y'all were wondering
I notice on one of your tags about The Mummy you said that Rick O’Connell and Evelyn’s relationship was the “perfect blend of the scoundrel falls for the good girl tropes that’s also turned on its head.” I would love to hear more about your thoughts on this. Could you elaborate? Thank you!
Sure! I'm a big fan of the bad boy-good girl dynamic, and The Mummy manages to approach it perfectly because it plays it straight while also twisting it because it plays with what the audience knows versus what the characters know.
Rick O'Connell is introduced to us as a soldier, a fighter and a commander, and while he's maybe a bit more snarky than straight-laced, how we first see him is integral to our the audience knowing he's a good man. But Evie doesn't know that. She meets the scruffy, rude, prisoner O'Connell who steals a kiss and punches her brother readily. And she begins crushing pretty quickly because of course she does, he's an attractive man and she likes how he cleans up. When he drops some history/treasure knowledge she begins falling for him. He's still snarky and not trying to win her over yet, but she's seeing the other side of him, the good man that he is rather than the scoundrel.
Same with Rick, he takes a while to see below the surface of the stuffy, well-mannered British librarian chasing a big score to the vivacious explorer, the inquisitive and brave woman Evie really is. Yeah, she's beautiful, but she's more than that, and he also begins to see her for who she is.
And the thing I love about them together is neither is a straight version of the archetype of Scoundrel/Princess combo. Rick is rude and snarky and a scrappy fighter, but he's intrinsically a hero, and the movie never tries to deny this by giving him dubious actions. He does heroic things, that's who he is, and Evie needs to see that as she falls for him.
Meanwhile, Evie isn't a damsel or naieve or anything like that. She isn't the typical "good girl" to Rick's "bad boy". There is no learning journey. Evie doesn't have to overcome any big flaw aside from being more confident in her own knowledge and capabilities so she can be a brave explorer like her mum, but even that is something that we see early on is part of her juuuust below the surface. She's feisty and clever and willing to do whatever it takes to help on the adventure. And Rick has to see her for what she is ("A librarian!" Lol I love that line). She's not just some pretty girl, she enjoys the world just as much as he does, and that's why they fall for each other. They're similar, they respect each other, and when they see how amazing the other is rather than what they first think the other is, they both fall quickly.
It's the same tired trope we've all seen before, but involves zero growth from either side, because because Rick isn't a scoundrel who needs to become a better man to win her heart, and Evie isn't a good girl who needs to get down from her perch or loosen up or whatever to get him. They're both fine as they are, they just needed to learn about each other first and then fall in love. It's literally the perfect romance, no changing yourself for your new love interest, just two people meeting and vibing and getting together.
The chokehold this film has on me has lasted for over 20 years. Thank god I'm *an artist* to do something about it.
my piece (+ closer looks at the "photos") for @themummyzine, a free to download zine full of art, fic, poems and recipes to celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of my favourite movies, The Mummy (1999)!
Everyone did an amazing job on their submission, and I'm so happy to have been able to participate in this project!! ^o^/
Carnahan + O'Connell <3

a very proud librarian and a filthy, rude, complete scoundrel <3
I love seeing my notifications blowing up since the theatrical rerelase of The Mummy. YES, everyone join the few of us still in Mummy land.
i am a sucker for the typical stoic fictional man who is actually so soft for his s/o. who buries his nose into the crook of your neck and wraps his arms around your waist whenever he can. maybe he’s not always good with his words, but for you? god. he literally hands you his heart on a silver platter
Evelyn O'Connell in dreanlight valley ❤️ One of my many creations.
"We woke him up, and we are going to stop him." "We? What we? We didn't read that book. I told you not to play around with that thing. Didn't I tell you?" "Yes, right then, me, me, me, me. I, I…"

I just love The Mummy (1999) so much like I've always felt it was a masterpiece, I was never able to pinpoint the exact reason but I think I got it in my last rewatch: every single character is extremely competent in a very concrete, punctual and once-in-a-lifetime helpful skillset, and then they're ABSOLUTE DISASTERS on literally EVERY OTHER ASPECT of their lives. Evy can read and Sherlock her way through literally any egyptian riddle like she was born for it, but PLEASE, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, leave ANY sharp objects, unstable structures or even-remotely inflamable objects ANYWHERE near her she WILL find a way to unleash HELL IN HER SLEEP. Rick can smash-parkour-swordfight his way out of any scenario but he has to have ALL neurons completely focused on the ONE (1) task at hand and if he gets out-DudeBroed he loses all his hit points his health meter goes red and he surprise-resets like a forced Windows update (see following scene for reference)
And don't even get me STARTED on Jonathan. This absolute gem of a man really is willing to let his sister drag him to hell and back with only mild complaining and will stop her human sacrifice ritual while the priest is mid-swing with an "hey Evy look we found the book!" with the same energy as if he was proudly announcing he found his long-lost car keys behind the couch but we DON'T blame him because he correctly spent his one braincell on THIS scene that changed the history of cinema forever:
In conclusion everyone is so very capable and so very pathetic at the same time and thus we have no choice but to stan
The Mummy x Halloween 2/? [ @hxans suggested "Night at the museum" crossover so I did it XD] "Hmm, nice dress" "It's a tunic!" "Love it how it shows you legs" "Oh, shut up, you!..
