Why Finland is home to the world's most radical libraries :
"What is truly free public space?" Harris asked. "Spaces really owned and used by everyone?"Such communal spaces are disappearing quickly, but Finns in particular hold them dear, and claim them as a representation of their wider social politics.

The relatively small Stark County District Library system in Ohio, as one example, waived fines in 2014, and one year in, saw positive results – an 11% increase in circulation, an increase in items checked out, and no significant increase in lost items, those never returned.

“ I am a bookstagrammer and I've seen so many other bookstagrammers go to Litsy and I think it's really interesting and I really want to try it. I love that it really is combining goodreads and instagram. I love the concept of it. “

It is also too easy to fall into viewing the evolution in eBook and print sales solely through the prism of Amazon and its often public power struggle with publishers, and to be drawn too deeply into seeing the future of publishing as one format versus another.
Has the print book trumped digital? Beware of glib conclusions
With ebook sales, it's very difficult because you've got to work out… How do you get the sales in Australia of an Australian author from Amazon? Amazon knows that that sale is in Australia. Even the publisher here doesn't necessarily know it. So it's really hard to get. Until you can get international booksellers, particularly an Amazon of the world, providing geographical location of the purchaser at title level, you really can't release the data.

...the SLV is in the midst of a $90 million redevelopment, which will open up 40% more space to visitors.
‘That is $60 million from the State Government and an extra $30 million that we are raising. Philanthropy and libraries don’t necessarily go together – museums and galleries are really great in those spaces but libraries have not been active in the philanthropic space with really big dollars,’ said Torney.
‘A 160-year-old institution being reinvented through new tech and social media is inspirational, and that history is driving a lot of our social popularity. The most popular [social media] posts by far are about that social history,’ said Torney.

Library fines for overdue materials are levied by almost every public library in Australia. Fines are designed to encourage people to be good library citizens, to return limited resources—books and other materials—to the library so other people can borrow them. On the face of it, fines are a simple and effective idea. But the model of library fines is paradoxical.

A number of libraries in NSW have set up an "unconfirmed address" category and accept identification like Medicare or concession cards in exchange for a limited category of borrowing.Â
Staff are also looking at installing lockers at libraries, so people sleeping rough can borrow books and leave them there overnight. "One of the things homeless people say stops them borrowing books is if they get stolen, they can't afford to pay the fine or for the stolen item," she said.
