all throughout our lives of privilege
we the children have been taught
the greatness of our nation
we would never discover the lives that were lost
but every day we see more clearly
of the ideals in which we are expected to perpetuate
to the people who lost when we gained
every day we remember what was not written:
we tore up the grass from
under the feet of those who grew with it,
the green fading to brown
and in our greatness decided it was our
god given right to claim the land we had found
we climbed mountains that stood tall
and planted flags on land that was not our own
superimposing our name and our culture
over hundreds of years of land sown
by its true inhabitants, doing the same with all those
who didn’t look like us, erasing all they had known
we opened our gates to outsiders
and yet we didn’t approve
when they wanted to stay, too
to where they came from, but where did we come from?
what do we have that they lack?
a lighter shade, a “better” accent,
a higher pedestal with which to stand on their backs?
these things that we should have known
what we stepped on to rise so high up
but history has a strength
and it will be carried through the centuries
forever bringing forth the names
of the people who shaped it
and even without people to name,
and even without memories,
and history goes on and on,
we the children have been taught
the greatness of our nation
and we who know how great it is not
have the power to change what is taught
