Dr. Gladys West. 1930 to 2026.
Born on a Virginia farm during the Jim Crow era, Dr West became one of only four Black employees at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in 1956 and the second Black woman ever hired there.
The mathematician's calculations quietly became the backbone of GPS technology used by billions of people every single day. The world has navigated by her work for decades before it learned her name. That's the kind of legacy that doesn't need a spotlight to be real. It just is.
We honor Dr. West and the long line of Black women who built the future while the world looked the other way🤎
Rest in power, Dr. West. We see you now.
My grandmother (a mathematician and physicist herself, and the one who got me into science and engineering) told me about Dr. West when I was a young nerdling. She joked (half-seriously) "Her work was so important, we named a cardinal direction after her."
It *was* a joke meant to underline the importance of her work, yes, but I've chosen to believe it should also be a little bit true.
Hey since TERFs buried the original, higher quality recording, here’s the only surviving recording of trans activist Sylvia Rivera’s infamous “Y'all Better Quiet Down” speech, along with full transcription, now free and open on Archive.org. The transphobic fucks can try their best to scrub us from history, but we’re not going anywhere.
Oh wow a piece of lgbt history..

Republican State Senator Merv Riepe, often the deciding vote in the chamber, pledged to oppose this year's anti-trans legislation in Nebrask
one cool thing about having an autistic dad whose special interest is underwater spearfishing is that when he catches fish he'll just call up a nearby chinese restaurant like "hi. i caught a fish. can you cook it and i'll bring my family by?" and they're like "yeah sure come on over white boy" and the fish is delicious.
it's worth adding that my mom is chinese and she always gets embarrassed by this. like she doesn't want to come to the restaurant with us. she doesn't want to be seen with the white man she caught plus the fish that her white man caught. everyone who works at the restaurant thinks my dad is awesome and compliments him + her for choosing him and we all find this very fun except for her.
