The iris flower is a common motif in the fine arts of different peoples and countries. In the European tradition, the symbolism of the iris is varied: it could be both a symbol of purity and a sign of mourning and grief. In Christian art, the iris became, along with the lily and the rose, one of the flowers of the Virgin Mary: its sharp sword-shaped leaves were associated with the invisible weapon that pierced the soul of the Mother of God during the crucifixion of Christ.

In the 20th century, impressionists loved to depict irises , in particular Claude Monet ; Vincent van Gogh’s painting “ Irises ” (1889), executed in an impressionistic manner, is widely known . The image of the iris became one of the emblems of the Art Nouveau style. (wikipedia)
