lol i storm-prepped gus today and guess what… it barely stormed at all. we should still be getting a lot of rain and storms the next couple days though as erika breaks up.
anyways, what do you guys do to prep your horses that live outdoors for storms?
Gus gets groomed until he’s sparkling, feet cleaned until they could walk in my house, and then I put durasole on his soles and frogs, turpentine on his hoof walls, ACV/tea tree sprayed everywhere and brushed in, fly spray on top of that, swat on his face because I don’t like him wearing a fly mask in a lot of rain, and his tail gets cowboy magic and brushed out so it doesn’t catch on things. and of course a spare halter and lead by his gate that has his name, my name and number, and my mom’s name and number.
What we do if we are worried they will get loose (ie if trees take out fences) is write our phone number in permanent marker on their hooves!
nice! I’ve got a sharpie out there solely for that purpose :)
I’m planning on getting a different halter (or finding an old one) to get a breakaway piece for, as well as attach a short lead to (short meaning about a foot and a half long.) attach, so it won’t pose any danger, but if he needs to be caught, there is an easy way to grab him. (as long as, of course, it doesn’t break off)
I also put hay in every corner on the off chance that something happens and Ben is trapped in a corner of the stall. I lock up all his windows and I keep my brake away halter on him with a name tag including my phone number, I braid a spare tag in his mane, stock up on all hay and grain in case something happens to the feed store, and I put in a huge 50 gal bucket full of water so he’ll have plenty of water.
American Pharoah must have enjoyed the flight, since he was so keen to stay in the air after he landed.
