Summer is setting up like an easy-bake oven after a monsoon-like May and June in Central Appalachia. Nothing like an extended heat dome to cook off the left-over dampness. But today was decent enough, so I headed up to Snake Hill to check out one of my all-time favorite summer wildflowers, poke milkweed (Asclepias exaltata), which is just now starting to bloom, along with the other milkweeds in the area. Someday, I'm going to clear a space in my shade garden to grow this gorgeous child (the lavender-tinged flower variation is especially appealing). Mid to late June also marks the beginning of peak orchid season in Central Appalachia. I found a lily-leaved twayblade (Liparis liliifolia) basking in a damp spot along a natural spring, not far from where a passel of orange-fringed orchids will bloom in another month or so. Dare you to say that scientific name three times fast. This orchid, which produces a short raceme of 5 to 30 loosely-arranged, pale purple flowers, isn't as showy as some and is easy to overlook in the sedge. And finally, I came across an immature wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) hopping through the leaf litter along the trail. These attractive, forest-dwelling amphibians have a frustrating knack for magically vanishing into the debris before I can position my camera for a shot. I guess tonight was my lucky night. :-)
