Happy 170th Birthday, @smithsonian!
Happy Birthday to the Smithsonian! Our neighbors on the National Mall were founded on August 10, 1846, when Congress passed legislation creating the Smithsonian Institution as an establishment dedicated to the “increase and diffusion of knowledge.”
The first two photographs, from the Mathew Brady collection, were taken during the Civil War, when what is now the National Mall was still decades away and only “The Castle,” built in 1855, is standing. The aerial photo from 1929 shows a more familiar National Mall with what is now the National Museum of Natural History and the Arts and Industries Building.
