This rare art nouveau brooch was created as a Comus 1906 New Orleans Mardi Gras Krewe Favor. These pins were traditionally given as gifts or favors during the celebrations of the Mistick Krewe of Comus, the oldest continuous Mardi Gras organization. This particular pin was created for the Krewe’s 50th anniversary in 1906.
The brooch depicts a forested scene with a woman featuring auburn hair and a sweet expression surrounded by clusters of grapes.
This design is a classic example of Art Nouveau, featuring free-flowing lines and organic, leafy forms.
Crafted by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of 14-karat gold and decorated with colorful enamel.
Back is inscribed "Comus Golden Anniversary" to commemorate John Milton's poem 'Comus: A Masque'
