She divides her attention between the spider from hell and Jai for only a moment longer before she nods and backs out of the room to go retrieve the mentioned items.

In very short order––though she suspects far longer to the one actually in the room with the creature still––she returns with a plastic bin (one that has a lid) and a broom.

“Here. What you asked for,” she says, practically dropping the items by him and then backtracking out of the room and to the doorframe once more.

(Spider meme) "You want me to do what...?" Jai's brows rose with disbelief for a moment before that expression morphed into a sly, knowing smirk. "Okay, keep an eye on it and I'll be right there." With a hum in his throat, he practically danced on his way out to the car. A spider, yeah right! Jai knew a booty call when he heard one. In record time, he arrived at the damsel in distress' house with the biggest grin on his face. "Honey, I'm home," he said playfully as he knocked on her door.

My character is scared by a spider and calls you up and asks your character to come over and kill it. What is your reaction?

If she had caught the give-aways in Jai’s voice, she likely would have told him to forget it and that she’d call someone else. But then, that was the reason Jai had been called in the first place. There was no one else to call.

She may well be Mossad… But spiders are like little demonic creatures escaped from hell. Particularly when they’re nearly as big as her fist.

So when she comes to the door, it’s with very real fear in her eyes, her gaze still on the spider slowly crawling across the ceiling of the adjacent room, not even sparing Jai a glance.

“It’s in there, on the ceiling.”

The hand supporting his head slowly falls to his lap, dragging along the side of his face and dancing around to illustrate his points as he does his damned best (and fails) to not fly off the handle.

“What do you mean, that I just blew a deal all for nothin’? That you were gonna drop the dude the moment I walked in? That’s great, man. I coulda walked outta there with that dude wrapped around my finger and had a few good dozen more automatics for my activities but now I gotta start all over with some other low level dealer thinkin’ he’s hot shit ‘cause he’s finally made it to brunch. Lemme tell you somethin’ brunch is nothin’. I eat guys like him for brunch. The real action takes place in diners in broad daylight, in the middle of the night in a nightclub that’s about to get raided the next morning. That’s where it all begins, that’s where it all ends. Where the real money and the connections are. Not sittin’ around over god damn cheap silverware forks on imitation china.”

Burnett’s radius of anger stretches only about as far as his animated arms will go, but he might as well be lashing out at every damn tourist and streetlight they pass. He’s settled back in his seat, as far back as it will go by the end of his rant about the lesser and finer points of navigating Miami’s ‘social circles’.

“Delfuente was nothin’. It’s just the principle. Time and legwork and pretendin’ to like the dude and all that.”

Black sunglasses watch her closely.

“I’d feel a hell of a lot better about it if I knew what I was gettin’ out of it. The way I see it, our deal only helps you out.”

She listens to his rant and then to his ‘business concerns’ with no less amusement than she had held at his previous statements, though she refrains from any verbal outbursts or laughter this time. When at last he seems to have run out of steam, she responds.

“You say that you were concerned about competition because of how much experience I have, and yet in almost the next breath, you seem to imply that you think me a novice. You speak in too many contradictions. It is either black or it is white. It cannot be entirely both at once.”

A shake of her head and she returns to a more serious, more professional tone.

“My client is very well-connected. They have resources, financial and otherwise. If you were to help me to establish a connection here, you would be given a discovery fee––I would see to that.  And then, you would also have the gratitude of my employer who would doubtless send more business to way where our other friends in the world are concerned.” 

She corners her eyes at him, a smirk appearing once more. 

“If you could ‘handle it’, of course.”

Her gaze returns forward again, braking––purposely a little harder than she actually had to, a tactic––to a stop at a red light.

“If you are interested, then perhaps the more specific details could be arranged between the two of us when I am not driving? I admit that I rather prefer to be able to see the people with whom I am negotiating and I believe that you would likely prefer my attention to be on the road, yes?”

In the rearview mirror, he can see that telltale ratty old van slowly creep towards the place. Backup should investigate and he’d have to report back to Castillo sometime within the next 48 hours, even if it just meant a quick meetup in a coffeehouse where they pretend not to know each other and talk from behind newspapers at separate tables. The dude was serious about procedure.

When they’re a good distance from the restaurant and he’s not worried about getting shot up or pursued by anybody, he’s able to relax—nope, nevermind a total stranger is driving. So what if they bailed each other out. Alliances shifted faster than the weather during hurricane season and he’s learned the hard way not to trust just anyone with a gun.

He’s sprawled against the passenger door posed in a sort of relaxed, sort of ‘let’s see how much space I can take up in this car with actual leg room’.

“For your information, this wasn’t the plan at all. If you weren’t there, I’d have just sat through drinks with the dude until he lowered his initial offering a couple grand. With you there…that changed the whole game. Competition and all. It’s one thing to sell your services against everybody else when they’re not around, but goin’ up against a ‘tailor’ that’s been around the block—and the globe—is another story entirely.”

His chin rests in his palm, staring at the passing high rises and shoddy storefronts and he’s suddenly aware he’s cruising around town with god knows who about to do god knows what to him.

“Things do change in Miami. If you’re lookin’ for stability, I’d suggest you keep your market to uh, wherever it is you came from.”

“Where I come from? I believe you mean, the Middle East, Mr. Burnett. You think the Middle East to be ‘stable’?” A laugh escapes her, the sound somewhat sharp, her amusement evident. 

Maybe it could be seen as somewhat mocking, though that is hardly her intention. She simply finds the concept absurd that this city could somehow be more unstable than ‘wherever it is’ that she had come from.

“Regardless, I regret to inform you that you needn’t have worried yourself over competition. I had already decided against Delfuente the moment that he broke our agreement of a closed negotiation. I would not even have known of you until your arrival had I not asked him if we could begin our talks. A poor way to conduct business, I should think.”

For several moments, she simply drives, occasionally glancing at him from the corner of her eye, as much to observe him as to lessen the likelihood of any surprises, Almost as importantly, she's running mental calculations. How quickly she can get to either of her concealeds if need be. What the chances are of other such defensive maneuvers. The odds that this will somehow not end badly.

At last, however, she speaks again, hoping to set her objectives back on track.

“I suppose that it may not all be ‘a loss’, however…”

“You seem to quite knowledgeable about this city, about the players, and––if I understood correctly from Delfuente and from yourself––you are established here, something that I am not. Unfortunately, as you have so eloquently alluded, all of the research in the world cannot replace firsthand knowledge… And so I am wondering… if perhaps we could reach some sort of… mutually-beneficial arrangement?” 

Another glance to him, trying to get a read. 

“Would that at least begin to make up for your troubles today?”

    A single brow raised at the word failed. But other than that, he listened quietly and motionless as she spoke. Her body language and tone told him a lot, but still, his expression remained pleasant. She was not the enemy.

    …She could be an ally.

    “You don’t think those are the only tricks I have up my Armani sleeves?“ Jai softly shook his head. “As you probably already know, it depends on the situation. With you and me…” He lazily pointed back and forth between them. “I would like us to work together, therefore I would attempt to negotiate a deal that would benefit both of us… And if it sweetened the pot, yes, I’d have to offer up my body to you as a bargaining chip.” He shrugged, obviously kidding. “It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.” Surely that had to break the ice, or at least a layer.

The calling attention to his suit, the jokingly made proposition, the overall presentation and pitch. She almost outright laughs but manages to restrain it though it may well be evident in the way that her eyes dance with something like wry amusement, not wanting to completely alienate a potential ‘friend.’

“Yes…” she begins at last, barely holding the smirk at bay. “Yes, I do suppose that somebody has to.”

A beat as she manages to regain some level of professionalism again, regarding him with about as close to ‘indifference’ as she can at the moment.

“As for the first of what you said, about working together––you know, the part that would actually be of some benefit to me…”  Ouch.  “––What exactly are you suggesting, hm?”

She’s no stranger, of course, to ‘you do what you have to do’ in this line of work, but something about the man’s general demeanor––what was it? an arrogance? an over-confidence?––that had rather irritated her. 

The latter part of his answer, or rather the tone of it, catches her slightly off-guard, but she continues as though she had never heard it.

“Oh? Well, it has failed you this time.”

As if a Mossad agent doesn’t know what to expect from the American agencies at this point. What’s more, she’d seen for herself how twisted up Eyal had gotten with that blonde CIA agent. As if she’d fall for those tactics!

“So what now? What happens when your ‘oh so refined’ skill of pouting or flashing those ‘pearly whites’ of yours does not get the job done?”

There are some dead giveaways to his actual career that he won’t ever be able to conceal, no matter how lawless he might behave.

It’s the drop into a military stance when he fires (none of that amateur arms wielding for him, civilians could get hurt if he’s not precise), the way he only pretends to indulge his sweet tooth for nose candy, or the way he’s mindful about driving in heavily congested areas (contrary to office belief, he does keep civilian safety in mind when he’s driving that electric white bullseye with reckless abandon). To the untrained eye, these things just make him look like a degenerate criminal with a conscience. To someone who is also undercover, these things suggest that Burnett is either more unpredictable than first imagined or that he’s got a virtuous background—something to be exploited—or that he’s just another cop in disguise.

Working out the means of escape with someone while bullets are flying overhead has become such second nature at this point  that all he really has to do is nod and ‘uh-huh’ his way through her plan: this was Escape Route #23. Fire enough rounds to discourage further pursuit, no intent to kill, disarmament isn’t even a priority; Delfuente is the type of person you only have to scare to make a clean getaway.

He shoots out the white decorative vases, those always shatter in such a way that resembles blood from a gunshot wound. It doesn’t stop the fire but it certainly comes with less frequency. Burnett shoots from behind cover, getting up to find other angles of attack every now and then. Always does a double take before an action, always fires two handed so as to absorb recoil and aim better. Pretty soon he’s backpedaling and counting to ten on his way out.

The sweat on the back of his neck goes unnoticed in the hot humid weather and it’s all he can do not to shout at his new ‘tailor’ accomplice about where the hell her car is, no you want to take this sidestreet, just run the damn light.

When he had agreed so easily, she had been a little surprised––though certainly not about to take issue with such cooperation.

And so, when he had started to lay down fire, she had taken off at a run for the door. Only once she is out the door and able to take cover at the first solid wall, past the glass of the restaurant does she draw her Beretta 92FS from the holster concealed at the small of her back. 

She counts eight, readies, then peeks around to open fire through one of the shattered windows by the count of ten. 

She fires at lighting fixtures, at just around Delfuente and his men, at the floor in front of them. The whole time, her attention is split between keeping them pinned down so that Burnett can retreat, and on Burnett himself.

There’s something odd––and oddly familiar––in the way that he goes about firing, the care he seems to be taking to not hit anyone. Something that suggests training of some sort and almost completely contrasts the way that he was running his mouth earlier.

Curious.

But there would be a place for such curiosities later.

By the time he manages to get out and to her, she fires a few more rounds for good measure before she issues a definitive ‘this way’ and starts running down the sidewalk.

After the first few steps, she back to grab his arm and pull him along guide him to avoid any confusion until they get to a fairly nondescript car. Not ostentatious, but then she hadn’t really been concerned about what the car looked like. She’d been more concerned with speed.

Apparently, rightly so.

Releasing Burnett, she uses her now free hand to retrieve the keys from her jacket, pressing the unlock even as she runs around to the driver’s side, holstering her weapon, throwing the door open, the key into the ignition, and then, with the slam of the passenger door, she peels out of the parking space.

With a few words of advice from Burnett regarding sidestreets and such, she weaves through traffic and down various streets, employing evasive maneuvers and tail-checks that she had learned at Mossad, until she’s fairly certain that they aren’t being followed. Then, and only then does she ease her foot off of the accelerator and begin to drive with an actual destination in mind.

The adrenaline is starting to wind down and her thoughts are beginning to settle, returning her attention to her passenger.

“Well. Now that we’ve gotten away from that mess, do tell me, Mr. Burnett…” she begins, glancing at him from the corner of her eye before looking to the street again. “––Was this… this, whatever that was, your plan from the beginning, or, as Delfuente informed me, do things truly always change so quickly here in Miami?”
