Mina swallowed hard at the mention of arrests and shook her head, taking another deep breath and mentally chanting It’ll be okay, it’ll be okay. She pursed her lips until she trusted herself to speak again, though she felt like she’d been punched in the gut with his news. “Arrests…Jesus, Burt,” she said, voice just above a whisper. Letting out a burst of air, she shook herself and regathered her composure. The fact that this Jai seemed to be so empathetic about the situation helped, and she managed a little smile at him for his concern.
“Today and yesterday,” she said, bringing her mind back to focus. “Right. Um. Well, today is Wednesday and Tuesday is dance lessons. So, in the morning, I got my daughter ready and took her to school before coming here,” she began, running through her morning routine. It was dull and she knew it wasn’t going to be interesting or what he was after, but he’d asked and it helped her remember details. “It’s month end here, which means payroll and certain financial aid and grants have to go out, so we were very busy. Still are. So I ate lunch in here. The rest of the day was largely paperwork, but I did call Burt again to try and get a hold of him…again. He has to sign most of the checks, you see,” she explained, wondering if he would ever sign another.
Waving her internal thoughts and side note aside, she continued. “I stopped by the Coffee Hut on my way to get Meghan, then we went straight to her dance class. That was about an hour, then we went home for dinner and homework. Um….usual bedtime rituals, song and story and all that. I read for a little then went to bed. Same morning rituals today, then I came here. More paperwork, and now you’re in my office, agent.” Both shoulders rose in a shrug and she brushed non-existent crumbs off her skirt before looking up at him.
“Please, if you can tell me anything about Burt, if there’s anything I can do…” she said, face a mask of concern. She was sure he wouldn’t be able to say much–hush hush investigations and all–but she would take anything he could give her. Though Burt was her supervisor, he had also come to be one of her friends over the years.
Watching the way she reacted, it was all Jai could do to keep from offering up the possible scenarios that might have helped calm her. If he had to guess, this was a case of blackmail, with Bert finally wanting to come clean. But that would have to be seen in time. Eventually he couldn’t help it anymore, and patted the top of her hand with his before giving it an encouraging squeeze as she recalled the day before. Normally Jai would have complimented her in some way by now but when she said payroll, his brows raised. What interesting timing.
Jai sighed, defeated, as he had to shake his head at her question while a hand turned off the recorder. “I wish there was more information I could give you, but…” the people here are incompetent and I wouldn’t put much stock in their investigation. No, that bit of info would not help at all. “All I know is he’s been missing since yesterday with no leads. No witnesses, no fingerprints, nothing.” It was a pro job, if anything. Jai’s lips pressed together with concern.
Just as he was about to speak again, there was a knock on the door before a man stuck his head in and waved Jai to come over to him, which was strange considering they had his number. “I’m sorry about this. I’ll be right back.” With the tape recorder now in his pocket, he walked over to the agent. Although the man was whispering, after a moment, Jai’s back straightened up and shoulders stiffened. Before shutting the door, he nodded to the man in a matter of fact manner.
With the click of the lock, Jai was set in motion. First he dashed toward Mina with his index finger over his lips in a hush gesture before typing something on his phone and showing it to her. Follow my lead. They’re coming for you, was all he took the time to write before moving furniture here and there. A chair was lodged underneath the handle for extra peace of mind before he began stacking desks against the wall, making a crude staircase to the ventilation shaft. Turning back toward her, he nodded toward her shoes, indicating she’d probably have to ditch them for now and then held out his hand to help her begin the climb.
“I will protect you,” he whispered.
