I didn't let Instagram control my life for a day...
This week, trending on Youtube is bloggers, vloggers, and beauty gurus all letting their massive IG following control their lives for a day. The idea was cute and all, until I tried it. Out of my 2000 + followers, the most engagement I had on the polls was about 6 people. Yes, I was a little bitter that I couldn’t participate in this new trend that would surely increasing my following and I was also disappointed in how my day was starting. The first poll was weather to leave my hair natural and curly or strait for the day. While both are beautiful, I really wanted to straiten my hair and have it out of the way for a little while, however my followers didn’t see it that way. Curly won, and to my reluctance, I obliged. The next poll was weather to make my coffee or walk to the local Dunkin Donuts and buy some. Buying coffee won, and to my dismay, it was pouring outside. I was so disappointed, but in the wrong thing. I was thinking, “Why can’t my followers just read my mind and pick the things I want?” when I should have been thinking, “Why can’t I do what I want?”. My followers and their opinions are not the end all be all. I am my own person and I can do what I want, when I want, which Instagram has slowly taken away from my life. So many times I’ve made my amazing friends, who are very tolerant of my obsession, take me to insta-worthy spots and spend days looking for the perfect photo opportunity.
So, that day, I shut down the polls, because I just didn’t care anymore. I still take pride in my photos and find enjoyment in sharing fun moments with people, now with more awareness and insight into what it’s actually doing for me. I had a great Saturday, wearing what I wanted and going wherever I pleased, and it was so satisfying to take my life back. I completely understand that this trend is just a silly little game that’s for fun and influencers didn’t mean to portray this message of doing what your followers want you to, and I’ve learned such a great lesson from this. Instagram is fun and creative, if its used right. Lets stick to making our own content for the simple pleasure of doing so. Let’s take back our own lives.
