Heiji Hattori and Kazuha Toyama...My Anime OTP
Oh my...I'm finally starting a blog for my favorite anime couple.
I discovered HeiZuha a little more than 20 years ago.
I liked Heiji first. Obviously, since he appeared in the series before Kazuha. He left a stronger impression to me than Shinichi. I found him more attractive, especially with his tan complexion. He is also funny, warm, and charismatic. They are both smart, but I was just really impressed how he was the first person to figure out Conan's true identity.
Kazuha's introduction was epic too. It was hilarious watching her get sassy and jealous because she thought Kudo was a girl who caught Heiji's attention but insisting that she is only looking after him like a big sister. The contradiction and Heiji's reactions made her debut entertaining and memorable.
At first, they reminded me of Yusuke and Keiko (Yuyu Hakusho) and Ranma and Akane (Ranma 1/2) who are two of the anime couples I also like. They are childhood best friends like Yusuke and Keiko. They are strong martial artists like Ranma and Akane. They bicker and tease each other a lot...but they care deeply for each other.
It was when I saw the Detective Conan episode "And Then There Were No Mermaids" when my love for this pair was sealed.
Kazuha saving Heiji from falling off the cliff, even when it meant she will be the one to fall instead.
Heiji rushing to grab Kazuha's hand, literally jumping after her.
Kazuha stabbing Heiji's hand with an arrow, so only she will have to fall and die.
Heiji not letting go of Kazuha despite the searing pain of the stab, and him not calling her out for what she did, just assured her he will pull them to safety.
Their actions, chemistry, and dynamic made them stood out to me.
However, during that time, Heiji and Kazuha didn't appear very often in the series, and there wasn't much content about them on the internet either. At the same time, life happened. I got busy graduating from high school, transitioning to college, landing my first job, changing careers, getting engaged, getting married, and eventually having kids.
Before I knew it, years had passed. While I never stopped liking Heiji and Kazuha, they naturally took a back seat as I focused on the different milestones in my own life. Looking back now, it feels nostalgic to rediscover them after so much time has gone by.
Over the last few months, I've been catching up on all the Detective Conan episodes, movies, and OVAs featuring Heiji and Kazuha.
Somehow, they've become my current comfort zone. Whenever I watch an episode centered around them, it gives me a temporary escape from the anxiety and worries that come with everyday life—the uncertainty of finding work, financial pressures, and the challenges that sometimes arise in marriage. For a little while, I can set those concerns aside and simply enjoy their adventures, their humor, and the comfort of seeing two characters I've loved since I was younger. Rediscovering Heiji and Kazuha after all these years has felt like reconnecting with old friends at a time when I needed that sense of familiarity the most.
I even got my kids to watch Detective Conan with me, and to my delight, they've grown to love Heiji and Kazuha too (though their favorite character is Kaito Kid). It's been such a joy sharing something I loved when I was younger with them and seeing them get excited about the same characters and stories.
I'm so ecstatic to learn that my favorite pair have been officially dating since 2024, and I'm even more excited to see those manga chapters animated.
And while I wait for those chapters to be animated, I've been writing fanfiction about Heiji and Kazuha. It's become another way for me to stay connected to their story while waiting for new episodes. Writing lets me explore their relationship, imagine new adventures, and fill in the moments I wish I could see.
