Le livre blanc
Jean Cocteau, 1928
SUBLIME CINEMA #437 - THE BLOOD OF A POET
Jean Cocteau was one of the great innovators of French cinema, a polymath of the arts and literature, and lived a life of artistic envy - mainly stationed in Paris during the 20âČs and 30âČs avant-garde, befriending the likes of Proust, Picasso and Modigliani. His paintings were great, his plays and novels were greater (he wrote a successful play for Edith Piaf, then they died a day apart), and his films were sublime.Â
His personal life was sometimes contradictory and messy, he was one of the first openly gay filmmakers of note, but also a Nazi apologist - âlong live shameful peaceâ, he wrote - take from that what you may. Â

and before slavers loaded the creaky old cask, she was by his side.
Their son would be Cuvette,
