Kalama saw three options:
1. Just let it be.
2. Run after the guy herself and take the goods on her own.
3. Help the poor girl who lost her bags and get them back for her.
None of the options were too promising, and she wasnāt at her best if she wasnāt in a group. However, a thought lodged itself into her brain - a combination. It was wicked, but she might as well give it a try. She jogged closer, tapping the stranger on her shoulder.
āHey,ā she spoke gently, as if she were reassuring one of the younger recruits,Ā āyou alright, maāam?ā
Surprised from a strange hand from behind, Lightus rushed forth and turned around, noticing a tanned girl standing there who was also the one asked. āIāmā¦iām fineā¦. No, iām not really fine.āFrowning, she pointed her finger at the boyās running direction.Ā āHe stole my bag and ran away! I tried to chased but⦠i couldnāt even bring myself near himā Letting a long sigh, she shook her head in disappointmentĀ āAnd even the police are nowhere to beĀ āPlease if you know how to call the police, please contact with them for me! Itās only my first day hereā¦ā
āNo,ā she stated - maybe a bit too quickly. After a pause, she recollected herself.Ā āNo. I can chase after him.Ā āDid you come from the airport?ā She stopped, waving her hand.Ā āWait, nevermind. Actually, just walk a bit ahead. Thereās a convenience store just two blocks up and a block to the right. Wait there and Iāll get it for you. I promise.ā
Somewhere, she felt a pang in her chest. But this was her job. She knew exactly what she was doing. If this woman was any sort of predictable, she would get a hotel room (or whatever it is she was doing, she did say it was her first day in Maui,) and not check her bag - bags? - until she and Kalama were very distanced. And even then, she couldnāt be that smart as to think she could or would do anything to her luggage.
Even just thinking about it made her anxious about spilling the beans, so she began to speedwalk backwards.Ā āConvenience store, just two blocks up, one block left! Wait for me there, Iāll get your j-stuff!ā Good call.
That frowning face was still there, but for anxiety this time.Ā āCan you really get it back?ā Then Lightus took a quick glance at the thief, urging her tired feet to run but failed. The girl was acting quite suspicious. She could advise Lightus to stay here, rather than a 2-block-away convenience store. Ā Despite all the doubts towards this stranger, she had no choice but to leave things to the girl.Ā āWell⦠iām counting on you⦠I will just stay underā¦ā She looked to her left Ā āā¦that umbrellaā. She tried not to follow the girlās saying.Ā
āWe just need a meeting place,ā she called, spinning around and breaking into a sprint. Her bob bounced around her head and she tossed it to get some of the humidity-frazzled bangs out of her eyes. She waved a bit and took a sharp left turn, moving quickly and soundlessly behind the robber.
Her legs burned and her nose was tingling from the shortness of breath, but she had learned that willpower was greater than stamina. The manās speed slowed as she got closer behind him. He walked casually, Kalama only a few steps behind. She waited until the streets were a bit quieter to drag him into the crevice between a boutique and a library.
āHey, criminal.ā
Well, she dashed away like a wind, leaving the woman here with the fury of her choice being taken away. But like she had any to begin with. Nothing she can do now except for getting to the convenient store, and crossing her fingers that things would go well.
At least she still had the signal sent from the device in her bag. It still could be used to keep track, and after a short break she would continue pursuing it.Ā
