āIf I know anything at all, where thereās a high, thereās a fall.ā
Star
the mononymous singer from santa carla.
an unprofessional ear piercer.
a bolt of lightning.
trouble through and through.
half vampire, half human, all fire.
"Is this the face of a man who looks happy to be here."
Was someone pointing a gun at you when this was taken? Jesus Christ.
"Yeah. Look at the vampire that's cut off and you'll see who's holding me hostage."
āOh. Nevermind, looks like youāre right where you wanna be. Let me guess, he convinced you to try the triangle out? Howās that working out for you, Moonbeam?ā
"Hey?? No?? I don't want to be here?? Him convincing me would've been much nicer than what he was doing, which was forcing me. It's going as terrible as I expected it would go, I told him I wasn't meant for the instrument life.."
āThings you definitely shouldāve thought about before joining a vampire band, Michael. You gotta pick up an instrument sometime, even if that instrument is your voice. Besides, David told me you werenāt so bad on guitar. Youāre definitely not Van Halen on the triangle, though ā ā
"I didn't think I'd actually be joining! I thought that.. you know.. they'd let me backstage and I could hang out, not that I'd have to perform! I've never been good with my hands, and my voice is barely together on a good day, so I don't think I'd be able to do anything right for the band.. I don't really mind guitar, but that's Marko's thing, you know? I really should just be muscle for the group, or something.."
āSo you wanted to be a groupie. Or a security guard? Come on now, Moonbeam. You gotta earn your keep around here, you know. And luckily for you, I know a kick ass song writer whoās in desperate need of a writing session. Think thatās something you can handle? Or should we bust out the triangle again?ā
".. Well you don't need to put it like that.. What's so bad about being a groupie, anyway? I'm still participating in some way! But I'm not sure how much I'd be of help.. I don't want to go on the triangle again though. Would this song writer be okay with me saying random things and hoping they land?"
āHow would you like me to put it then, hm? Nothingās wrong with being a groupie, all Iām saying is the band is where the actionās at. I have a feeling youāre gonna do fine as long as a triangleās not involved. This song writer is⦠open to the idea, as long as the random things you say are real. Weāre gonna need a pen and paper, and then you can try a few lines. Okay?ā
".. I.. don't actually know. But it feels like an insult somehow?? I don't really need in on any of the action, honestly.. Just watching has always been more than enough. And please, I never want to touch a triangle again.. Why would a rock band even need a triangle anyway?? And I swear I'll try my best to say some good lines.. for this songwriter. I can grab some paper, you grab the pen?"
āAlright, alright. You are something else, Emerson. Literally every single time I try to pin you down, here you go, surprising me again. Enough triangle talk ā letās write. Penās up ā you got the paper? Cause Iām about ready to hear some mind blowing lyrics. I mean ā this songwriter is.ā
"What can I say, I like being full of surprises. It keeps you on your toes, doesn't it? I have to say, I haven't written something properly in.. forever. Writing was never my strongsuit, I was always better with hands on stuff.. I have the paper! I just hope this songwriter will enjoy what I have on the mind.."
āYeah, it does. Kinda fun, actually. Oh, Iām pretty confident she will. Okay, looks like weāre ready. Iām sure you can handle the writing, but⦠Iām kinda curious about your hands on method now. Show me what you mean. If you donāt mind.ā
"That's all I can hope for.. That this stays fun. I guess we'll have to see if her opinion changes.. And ah? I've never heard of hands on songwriting, but I guess I could always try something new.. Since you're the expert, would you mind showing me the way?"
āI think it will. Weāre off to a pretty good start already, if thatās anything. Oh, hands on songwriting is new for me too, so I guess weāll be figuring it out together. Iām up for the challenge if you are. Okay ā stand right there, and Iām gonna stand right here. This isnāt too close, is it? Tell me if this is too close ā ā
You will be at your absolute lowest, and then here comes a blonde to fuck everything up even more.
I need a cigarette.
"This is true. The damn blonde messes everything up. Maybe we can smoke about it together?" Ignore the fact he will definitely be coughing up his lungs.
āIf you wanted to smoke me out, Emerson, all you had to do was ask. Come on ā youāre buying. Anyways, whatād he do to you?ā
"Ha, didn't know if I would be allowed to or not.. But fine, anything for a noble cause. And what didn't he do? I feel like it's something new everyday.."
āOoo, allowed? Youāre so proper, god. Thatās what I wanted to hear. Cigs are pretty cheap, anyways. Hopefully this wonāt break your piggy bank wide open. Ah ā yeah. Heās⦠yeah. Whatever. Not my problem, or yours. Not our problem. Not right now.ā
"What? It's not like it's polite to intrude somewhere you're not invited, even if I'm not.. fully a vampire, it's a good principal. And yeah, I'll be able to afford it, do you think I'm that broke? Exactly, we shouldn't let him ruin our night. Let's have fun!"
āWell, would you look at that. Half vampires do have manners. Who knew? Not broke, just not flashy. Youāre not flashy. Thereās a difference, Emerson. Anyways, I still need my nicotine, but Iām all in for a fun night. You wanna go for a ride too? I know a spot you might like, but itāll take forever to walk there. Or we could just⦠go to the pier.ā
"You say that like you don't.. Don't tell me you go around giving us a bad reputation, or something. And that's fair, I guess.. Although it's pretty easy to not be flashy when you consider the company we're usually around. I'm down for anything, honestly.. A ride, the pier, as long as we're together I don't mind where we go or what we do."
āI do. Have manners, I mean. Our reputation is sparkling, weāre the most proper half vampires on the block, come on now. Yeah, I wouldnāt be quick to go throwing anything super valuable in anybodyās face. Mm, youāre sappy tonight. You feeling alright, Michael? Donāt get me wrong, itās cute, but I wanna know why. A ride and the pier, then. More time together⦠or something like that.ā
uh, i think someone stole your cardboard cut out. wasnāt e.t. standing over there, like, an hour ago?
( @lightningbolted )
Oh gosh dang it! Ooo Iām going to get it for that. Thanks - err- Star, was it?
Thatās me, yeah. And youāre Pete, right? Anyways ā anything you wanna keep around here, lock it up or bolt it to the floor. Santa Carlaās not really known for being warm and fuzzy, yāknow?
Iām Pete, yeah. Max really liked that cutout. If I could nail down cardboard I would, trust me. Did you see which way they went?
Down the street, to the left. You gonna go knock some sense into them? Thereās a pipe I passed on my way here that could be pretty helpful, if thatās what youāre gonna do.

āYeah, well, thatās ācause I canāt be, these nights.ā
Her nose twitched at the smell of the cigarettes, but sheād tolerate it for the time being. The girl seemed nice, and for a moment, Val was slightly envious. The care she put into her makeup and her locs was admirable. Her own close-shorn cut could barely hold a candle - or, in this case, a lighter - to the woman standing next to her.
āSanta Carlaās been a home for all the freaks and weirdos, so I gotta be on my toes, anyway.ā At once, she realized her fumble. She didnāt mean to say it like that. Immediately, she turned and gave a casual - and slightly apologetic - smile to the stranger.
āNot that I think youāre one of āem.ā
Star inhaled, tilting her head up to blow the smoke out towards the sky rather than the girl she sat with. Her rough edges were still accompanied by a few manners; she hadnāt lost herself completely to this town just yet. She noted the nose twitch and shifted her cigarette to the hand that was farthest away from the space between them, flicking her lighter before she took another drag.
āOh no,ā Star hummed back, her dark eyes glittering amusedly, āI am.ā A half freak. A half weirdo. Still fighting, still struggling against herself.
āItās not so bad once you get used to it.ā
A joke, something to lighten the mood. The constant war that raged within her was exhausting; would it be so bad enjoy herself for a few minutes before the hunger rose again, or her conscience with it? She returned her attention to the girl, deftly slipping her lighter back into her pocket. She was striking ā pretty eyes and a relaxed smile. Still, the warning bells that constantly rang in her head sounded off on cue as she said, āI didnāt get your name.ā
uh, i think someone stole your cardboard cut out. wasnāt e.t. standing over there, like, an hour ago?
( @lightningbolted )
Oh gosh dang it! Ooo Iām going to get it for that. Thanks - err- Star, was it?
Thatās me, yeah. And youāre Pete, right? Anyways ā anything you wanna keep around here, lock it up or bolt it to the floor. Santa Carlaās not really known for being warm and fuzzy, yāknow?
And if I shaved off all my hair? What then?
You might be able to pull it off.
I'm thinking I could bedazzle my bald head.
Now that is an interesting idea. You should throw some chains on top too, really make it sparkle.
MMM maybe I'll even make it glow.
Mm, thatād be sick. What color? You gonna chuck some paint up there too?
Yeah, I'm thinking neon purple probably. Maybe I'll buy fancy hats too on the days I don't wanna do all that bedazzling work.
Iāve got a couple scraps that might look good on some hats if you want a bit of extra shimmer. Sounds like youāre gonna go full disco ball already, though ā
how much for this one? it looks a little faded. do you guys have anything new?
( @lightningbolted )
āOh yikes, Iām sorry about that! Let me check in the back!ā
Rowan heads to the storage room for a minute or so and comes back with something brand new. She slides it across the front counter.
āThatās gonna be eight dollars. You can keep the messed up one too if you want! I mean itās obviously not gonna sell any time soon.ā
Star inspects the album, giving a nod before sliding the cash over the countertop to Rowan.
āThanks,ā she hums, slipping both albums into the bag hanging on her shoulder. She peers around the store, until her eyes catch on a poster hanging on one of the walls.
āIs that for sale too?ā
It would look good in the Iron Works, she thought, fit perfectly with the haunted vibe the place had going on. The boys might like it too ā it was worth a shot in her opinion, and a much safer misstep if she got it wrong than the reckless tendencies that had landed her in with them in the first place.
āHm?ā Rowanās eyes landed on the poster on the wall, āOh, thatās just for decoration. But we keep extras just in case they get messed up.ā
The witch reached under the counterāridden with carvings of various sigils and symbolsāand pulled out an identical poster, rolled up and secured with a rubber band.
āI can throw this in for a couple of bucks. Boss wonāt mind. As long as weāre making money, yknow?ā
Starās face softened slightly. It wasnāt exactly extra work, but she didnāt have to make the exception. Santa Carla wasnāt exactly known for its friendliness, and sheād almost forgotten that not everyone in the outside world held a weapon she couldnāt see. Not everyone was poised to strike.
āThank you,ā Star said quietly, rifling through her bag and pulling out two fives.
āKeep the change, uhā¦ā her eyes narrowed slightly as she squinted down at a name tag, ā⦠Rowan.ā
She didnāt even know if that was legal (they were in a record store, not a restaurant), but it felt like the least she could do at the moment.
āThatās enough for the poster though, right?ā
āThanks! That- thatās more than enough,ā Rowan smiled, dividing the change into the impromptu tip jar (a pint glass stolen from the dive bar across town). They werenāt technically supposed to have oneāit was more of a take a penny leave a penny situationābut her boss never checked, and so what if her and her coworkers decided they deserved a little something extra?
Rowan glanced down at her own name tag, then back at the other woman, āCan I ask your name? I just- I could swear Iāve seen you somewhere before. Yknow, out and about.ā
Star gave one last nod, all set to turn tail and head back home, but she paused at the next question she was asked.
āProbably at the boardwalk,ā was what came out of her mouth, accompanied by an easy going shrug.
āIām Star.ā
She extended her hand for a shake.
āIf they ever let you out of here, you should come see a show. The band is pretty good, and Iād say that even if I wasnāt in it.ā
She was proud of her boys and the music they made, proud of herself and her music as well. Being on that stage was as close to magic as she could get nowadays, and she didnāt miss the opportunity to share it. Star slid the poster into her bag, humming, āThey do let you out of here, right? Iāve heard the comic book store a few blocks over runs a pretty tight ship, barely any time to go out and explore.ā
āStar!ā Rowan shook her hand, āitās nice to meet you. And yeah, those kids run that shop like the navy, but donāt worry my boss is very lenient. Iām like, one of three people on staff that can actually make sales, so he basically lets me do whatever I want.ā She brushed imaginary dust off of her shoulders before leaning casually on the counter.
āThe bandā¦ā Rowan looked at Star for a moment before letting out a gasp and a wide smile, āOf course! Youāre in the band! Iāve seen you guys play before! A couple times actuallyāthatās why I recognize you!ā
She had started tapping on the wooden counterāfidgeting with whatever she could, āYou guys are seriously awesome,ā Rowan straightened up, āSorry, I donāt mean to sound like a groupie or anythingāthatās not the case. I just tend to, uh, ramble. Iāve been told.ā
āItās nice to meet you too. Strange, I guess I shouldāve placed you earlier. I thought you looked familiar.ā
Her fingers ran along the strap of her bag, up and down a few times in a mindless rhythm. It was always easier to move ā sheād ran her entire life, but if she wasnāt going to bolt, then she needed something to ground her. More often than not, smaller actions managed to keep her calm enough.
Star snorted next, amused.
āYeah. The Frogs are⦠intense.ā To say the least. Their affinity for killing vampires was just one of the many reasons she tended to steer clear of the brothers.
āNo, youāre good,ā she said immediately, with a quick shake of her hand. āDavidās ego wouldnāt be able to fit through the door if he heard you say that, but I appreciate it. Seriously, thank you ā weāve⦠had a lot of time to get our sound to where we want it to be.ā A small smile lit up her face.
āAre you doing anything when your shiftās up?ā
Rowan recognized the fidgeting, the need to always be moving, and smiled to herself. It was nice to know she wasnāt the only one who couldnāt stay in one place for too long.
She laughed at the comment about David, thinking back on her past interactions with him. Thinking about what that meant about Star⦠Rowan didnāt say anything. It would be rude to assume. She rocked back and forth on her feet, holding the counter for stability.
āNope! Other than a very important appointment with the joint in my bag, Iām totally free after work.ā
āDamn. That sounds like a great night.ā
Star barely held back a sigh. Though she loved performing, there wasnāt much she wouldnāt give for a real night off, a cigarette between her lips and absolutely nothing to do. There was surprisingly little down time in her life currently, though she supposed sheād have eternity to relax, if she managed to pluck up the courage to finish what sheād started. Star fiddled with the edge of her poster, looking back up at Rowan.
āYou should come out tonight, hang out before the show starts. Iāll keep the boys in check if theyāre around, I promise.ā
Rowan smiled at the invitation. Sheād built a little life for herself in Santa Carla in the short amount of time sheād been there, but there were always quiet and lonely timesāsometimes more often than not.
āYeah, Iād love to hang!ā She tapped her fingers on the counter idly and glanced up at the clock on the wall, āIām honestly just counting down the minutes till I get to lock this place up.ā
āAwesome,ā Star grinned back. As much as she loved her boys, it would be great to hang out with another girl, even if it was just for a little while before their show started.
āShow starts at nine, but Iām usually on the boardwalk by eight. Here,ā she rustled around in her bag again, tearing off a scrap of paper from one of the many notebooks and scribbling out directions to a spot she frequented. She held it out to Rowan, excitement glittering in her gaze.
āIāll see you later, then. Yeah?ā
// i have had the longest few days everrrrr ever ever but i am locking in to respond in a few hours!
ā ā iāll make you work for it!
ā š„: @mttztrading
have you seen my scarf? iāve looked everywhere for it, i canāt find it.
( @lightningbolted )
š³avenāt seen it, Star. Neither have I seen any of the boys with itā¦You couldāve just always left it somewhere else outside of Coronado-Or maybe an overly eager fan took it with āem after the last show. Either option is possible-Well, anything lost is bound to be found eventually, right?
Damn it. David, itās my favorite. Are you sure you havenāt seen it anywhere? I swear to God if I find it in with any of their clothes, Iām gonna kill ā whatever. Itās fine. Youāre right, itāll probably turn up eventually. Could you⦠keep an eye out for it, though? Please? Just in case it floats by or something. You know how I am about lost things.
š“ do know how you are, Starā¦If I had seen it I wouldāve told you. Thereās no use in hiding it or lying about itā¦Not when it causes you so much unnecessary distress and frustrationsā¦I got you. Weāll find it eventually togetherā¦If it takes a while we still will. Itāll turn up. Lost things always doā¦go where theyāre meant to be in the end-Iāll keep my eyes out for you til then.
I know you wouldāve, David. I believe you. You know that, right? Thank you; I really appreciate it. I guess my headās just been all over the place lately. Iāve just been so hungry. Itās so distracting. Sometimes it feels, like, all consuming. Was that what it was like for you? You know, before you⦠fully turned. Is that what itās like now? Does it ever stop?
And if I shaved off all my hair? What then?
You might be able to pull it off.
I'm thinking I could bedazzle my bald head.
Now that is an interesting idea. You should throw some chains on top too, really make it sparkle.

"No, no, no, don't get up!"
"That looks bad. Like really, really bad."
"We should get you to a hospital. Right now."
"How did you manage to do so much damage?"
"Okay, we should all stay calm and not panic."
"What were you thinking, putting yourself into so much danger?"
"You should definitely let me carry you."
"That's what you get for playing the hero."
"On the bright side, that scar's going to be a great conversation starter."
"That was so stupid. You could have died!"
"Could I interest you in a band-aid? Or a trip to the ER?"
"It's okay, just... don't look at it."
"You can't go on like this!"

Fresh from the nearby concession stand, the broad-shouldered musician strolls along with a protein bar in one hand and adjusting Guinevere so she hangs more comfortably from its strap accross his shoulder. The unexpected bump makes him stop in his tracks, recognition settling in after a moment.
"You're with the rock band." The situation didn't seem to bother him at all. Whether one or the two of them were at fault wouldn't solve anything. Why give it the time of day? He continues as he unwraps the protein bar, calm and unfazed. "Yeah, probably should." He takes a bite, then apologizes with a relaxed smile. "My bad."
After swallowing, he hooks a thumb toward his saxophone resting against his side. "Tell you what. Next time you spot me around, ask for a song. No need to tip."
āOne of the rock band, not with,ā Star corrects immediately, though not unkindly. Itās instinct now, to assert her position, old habit to cast off the mere idea that she was a groupie and not an integral piece of the operation itself. Still, it isnāt something she expects strangers to know, and he canāt be faulted for that.
āItās cool,ā she shrugs with a nod, accepting the casual apology. No need to hold a grudge, especially over something as small as this. Her eyes brighten infinitesimally at the mention of a song, and the words, āCould I hear one now, actually?ā leave her mouth before she can stop them. Sheās been stuck on a hook for a new song anyway, and this could be the perfect thing to break the rut sheās spent the last few days in.
āIāve got a few dollars in here.ā She rustles around in her bag for them, producing them after a few minutes.
āIām ready whenever you are.ā
